This program rips CDs to ISO or OCD files and emulates a CD drive for the resulting files, but its interface could disappoint some users. Many programs require reading files from a key disk in the CD-ROM drive. Virtual Original CD Emulator creates a copy of the disk and stores it on your hard drive. You then use the program’s virtual CD drive to host the copy, but only for those CDs without certain forms of copy protection. Using Original CD Emulator is simple. Most commands could be accessed with a single button, but we found the program interface cramped. Hosting an image on a virtual drive is a matter of dropping a link from an image on the virtual CD icon. A problem occurs if a user stops hosting an image and neglects to close all programs accessing the image. In that event the operating system will report an error until the original image is rehosted. Users also can easily burn the ISO or OCD files to a backup disk. We found this program useful and simple enough for novices.
