The lightweight utility Visibility for Mac reveals hidden folders and files inside the Finder with a click of a button. At only 1.4MB in size, this application downloads quickly and requires no setup.

The utility runs with a small footprint, both literally in terms of its window size, and figuratively in terms of its required resources. It doesn’t even include any menu items across the menu bar. In fact, the menu bar doesn’t even change to reflect that Visibility for Mac is an active application. Despite this small bit of confusion, the application performs its few easy tasks admirably, and once you get past its lack of conformity to standards, the interface is very intuitive. We found the two most useful tools to be the Open Any File feature, which allows for a selection of several different file types to open in their default applications, simultaneously, as well as the Show Invisible Files feature, which reveals all of your Mac’s hidden files and folders with the push of a button. There is a third feature, Delete Any File, which doesn’t appear to behave remarkably different than just deleting multiple files out of the Finder, itself. Still, we appreciated the added functionality of the first two features.

Easy to use, Visibility for Mac performs useful functions that the Finder either can’t do on its own, or can’t do, easily. This application will be useful to any user who needs to access invisible files and folders on their Mac.

PDF Checkpoint for Mac checks portable documents for errors, sorts them into folders, converts them to one-page PDFs or images, makes visual tweaks, and saves them in a copy. This premium app supports multiple file operations, analyzes the documents as they’re loaded, and looks for predetermined settings or content keywords. Overall, the app feels snappy and very focused, but we did encounter a few interface peculiarities.

PDF Checkpoint for Mac features a main window with five sections in addition to an optional document details drawer. Adding files is done by dropping PDFs into the Files area or by using the “Choose Files…” button. Multilingual PDF documents (LPDF) are not supported. The four available actions are: sorting documents into folders determined by the presence of errors, converting PDFs to one of five image formats, splitting multi-page documents, optimizing PDFs by changing the color scheme, and compressing images. When testing two six-page documents, it took us four seconds to convert them to JPEG images and two seconds to split them into 12 PDFs. Curiously enough, the app’s settings are located not in Preferences, but in the “Actions” button on the toolbar.

Although PDF Checkpoint for Mac provides a focused and relatively in-depth feature set, it will only be useful to you, if you handle a lot of PDFs. The preflight scanning features, as well as options like scaling, PPI and scale adjustment, color correction, and compression, provide a level of customizability to an otherwise static format.

Nothing is more frustrating than trying to mass print documents with various settings one at a time. BatchOutput PDF for Mac seeks to fix this problem by helping you print multiple PDF files at one time with modifiable settings.

BatchOutput PDF for Mac is customizable but is only able to work with PDF documents. The interface allows you to drag and drop individual files into the queue. Each batch you create can have its own unique printing feature configurations. Printer configurations include copy number, pages, shrinking, page setup, layout, and other printer-specific features. The only real bad thing about this program is that you cannot save the print settings. However, the full version of the program allows you to save print configurations to hot folders that remain active. The free version is a partial copy of the program that you can use for a trial period of 30 days. The full version of the program retails for $24.95.

BatchOutput PDF for Mac is an effective time-saving program for dealing with complex and large print jobs made up of PDF files. Unfortunately, the inability to save settings makes the free version only appropriate for personal use. The configurable hot folders in the full version would make that version suitable for an office environment.
