Magic Mirror is a basic photo-editing program that allows users to warp, stretch, and otherwise play with their images. Although we’ve seen similar programs before, this one isn’t bad, especially for kids.

The program’s interface is basic and colorful, although we wish it were better labeled–or labeled at all. There are four unmarked buttons on the left, a slider numbered zero through 100 on the right, and an unmarked slider that looks like a volume control at the top. On one hand it’s kind of fun to play with the effects not knowing exactly what’s going to happen, and eventually users will figure them out, but it would have been nice to know from the start what we were dealing with. The program doesn’t have a Help file, making its features even more of a mystery.

Aside from not knowing exactly what each button or slider does, we found the program intuitive and easy to use. Opening, saving, and resetting images is easily done using buttons at the bottom of the screen, meaning that young users won’t have to search through menus to perform basic functions. The program enlarges, twists, shrinks, and warps parts of images, and users can control what portion of the images is affected and how strong they want the effect to be. In general the program didn’t wow us, but it’s a fun way to play with photos, especially for kids.

Magic Mirror has a seven-day trial period. It installs desktop icons without asking but uninstalls cleanly. We recommend this program to all users.

Super Screen Capture provides multiple options for making copies of onscreen images, but outdoes itself with its added abilities.

The interface was intuitive; we only consulted the Help file’s instructions once to learn how to properly save images. We loved how the program’s five tools for making screen captures were laid out on a small toolbar that stayed at the top of our desktop. We simply clicked on an option and the capture happened almost instantly with the Full screen and Window. The Shape, Polygon, and Scroll options meant we needed to click and drag our mouse to get the proper shape, though we couldn’t think of one instance where the polygon tool’s free-form drawing would come in handy. The biggest obstacle was discovering that the program saved images in its own folder instead of asking us where they should go, which was the only inconvenience of the process. Two things that saved properly were the program’s excellent features for capturing sound and video. Both operated like a VCR or cassette player, where we simply hit record to capture the sounds or images onscreen. This entire program never failed to offer something we enjoyed from the photos to the sound, though we didn’t appreciate its troublesome saving.

Super Screen Capture has a seven-day and 2-minute recording trial limit. While the way it saved was inconvenient, the rest of the program was good enough that we recommend it.

FunPhotor offers to take users’ photos and put them somewhere hilarious. Whether on the face of a dollar bill, the Mona Lisa or elsewhere, this program’s simplicity ensures success nearly every time.

This program’s interface is very simple, thanks to its layout. Using a five-step wizard and large, intuitive icons, users will be up and running in no time. In addition, a Help file and a video tutorial are available for anyone needing a little more assistance. Users simply input a photo into a selection of silly templates, from a gorilla’s face, to a spot on Mount Rushmore. One nice touch we enjoyed was the capability to adjust the picture’s alignment by tilting and moving the photo with arrow buttons until it lined up within the template, making the image perfect. Users can also insert a text message, which makes the overall product very silly and cartoon-looking, but perfect for those not too serious about photography. The program’s best feature is a simple set of commands that let users with cameras on their computers instantly upload their photo into a template.

FunPhotor comes with a brief, seven-day trial period. But by laying out the process in a simple five-step format and providing fun results, users will quickly discover that this is a great download for creating silly pictures.
