It seems as if every search engine offers an Internet Explorer toolbar that mixes pop-up blocking and e-mail functionality with its search capabilities.

Yahoo Companion Toolbar differs a bit from other add-ons since some of its features are designed to work with your registered Yahoo account. The interface is a standard toolbar. You can add or remove buttons that launch various Yahoo services, though you have to click the Refresh Toolbar option to see the changes.

In our tests, the pop-up blocker eliminated most, but not all, ads. It didn’t hinder normal surfing, and the toolbar uninstalled without any problems. Yahoo users may appreciate the quick access to services Yahoo Companion Toolbar provides.

Yahoo Messenger (Classic) for Mac is the Mac version of the popular Windows YM, a communication app for anyone with has a Yahoo account. Considering that its Windows-based version is one of the most-used messaging apps, we were eager to see how the app performed. What we found were some nice features but nothing that really stands out over other messaging apps.

The application’s user interface is well-designed and has all the control buttons available at a glance. What we liked is that the platform is finally opening its doors by adding support for MSN, Lotus Samtime, and LCS platforms so you can add your friends using the aforementioned platforms to chat. During our testing, Yahoo Messenger for Mac did its job pretty decently. Text messaging is good, and the sound notifications are very handy. However, when we tested the video call feature, we were surprised by the somewhat poor quality of the video. While the sound was OK, the video needs lots of improvement. We did like the option to organize friends into groups, which made it easier to find and contact the right person. The app also has features like “Phone out,” which means you can call landlines and mobile phones, but you’ll need to purchase credits to access these.

Overall, Yahoo Messenger for Mac is a nice application, showing that the company is opening up to cross-platform ideas, but those who have tried out other messenger apps such as Adium probably won’t be won over.

The pop-up blocker stops most ads and doesn’t hinder normal surfing.

The new Yahoo Anti-Spy spyware scanner is an excellent addition. Our test showed it to be just as thorough as stand-alone scanners. It quickly scans your system and provides detailed information about any spyware or adware found. You can then easily remove what you want. With this new protection, Yahoo has definitely become the toolbar to beat.

The latest version of Yahoo’s toolbar drops the word “Engine” from its name and makes customization even easier than before. It also comes with a revamped look. Yahoo Widgets lets you add small standalone applications that can offer an endless variety of features, content, and system functionality.

Twenty-two default widgets are included–including a weather forecaster, a Yahoo Mail manager, a Wi-Fi signal checker, a calendar, and an iTunes remote. Though the true value of the app should be judged on the quality of the widgets developed, the platform itself is polished and easy to use.

A helpful tour introduces users to the basics of widgets, offering up some examples. Adding and removing widgets is simple, and the new widget dock features more personalization options. Most widgets include tweaks such as skinning options. Other new improvements include Windows Alt-Tab menu access and helpful configuration buttons that appear when you mouse over a widget. Unfortunately, the app inserts itself into your start-up programs without asking–but you can fix that in Preferences.

Yahoo Widget 4 is a valuable tool for users of Yahoo services, and it’s a helpful download for anyone who wants standalone desktop tools for regular Web activities, system information, or whatever cool feature the next great widget will offer.
