Uninstalling bloated programs and process-hogging applications is one of the most critical ways to keep your system’s performance snappy. Unfortunately, the built-in Windows uninstaller is limited when it comes to removing leftover files and residue.

Wise Program Uninstaller takes it up a notch as an alternative solution. When you first fire up the program, you’re greeted with some basic options and metrics. The bottom status bar lets you know how many running programs are installed and how much space is occupied. There are two main uninstall approaches: safe and forced.

Safe uninstall guides you through the default uninstallation process and gives you the option to remove any related files, folders, and registry entries. Forced uninstalls are used more for cases where programs are more stubborn about being removed. Wise Program Uninstaller also offers a repair option for faulty installations, though reinstalling would probably get stabler results.

The interface is fairly clean: it’s not too cluttered and there are no unnecessary features or buttons. One additional feature we appreciated was the ability to go directly to the registry editor for each installed program by right-clicking on an installed item. There’s also a seemingly random “like” button placed, which, to be quite frank, we can only imagine a very small audience using to publicly declare their affection for a system utility. But, hey, whatever floats your boat.

Wise Program Uninstaller is a lean and mean cleaning machine. We definitely prefer it over the stock Windows control panel and definitely recommend it for anyone who frequently maintains a PC.

Wise JetSearch is a speedy alternative to the built-in Windows search tool that can search for files and folders in a variety of locations. We think it’s a great choice for anyone who’s looking for an alternative to the built-in Windows option.

Wise JetSearch has an attractive and very simple interface. A drop-down menu reveals a series of check boxes from which you select the drives you want to search. There’s a field where you enter your search terms, including file extensions and wild cards. Click the search button, and Wise JetSearch will scan the selected locations and return its results in a matter of seconds. When not in use, Wise JetSearch appears as a thin blue rectangle at the top of the screen; mouse over it and it expands to a search box, only bringing up the full interface once you’ve run a search.

Wise JetSearch has little in the way of documentation, and users who aren’t familiar with the use of wild cards and other search strategies would do well to look for a little more information elsewhere. Overall, though, Wise JetSearch is incredibly easy for just about anyone to use. It’s worth a try if you need a search tool that’s nimbler (and more attractive) than Windows provides.

Wise Video Downloader can handle anything posted on YouTube, including HD videos. It’s free and runs in Windows XP to 8.

If you select the optional desktop icon, Wise Video Downloader finishes the installation process by briefly displaying a prominent arrow pointing to its newly-placed icon. It’s a small touch but saves time finding it when your desktop is starting to look like nursery room wallpaper! Wise Video Downloader’s user interface takes its visual and functional cues from media players, with a row of large buttons controlling all necessary functions beneath a split window: Enter YouTube URL on the left, with an entry field and Download button; Search YouTube Video on the right, with a search field. Wise Video Downloader is so easy to use that, in addition to copying and pasting your video URL, all you have to do is be on a YouTube page in your browser and press “Add URL” in Wise Video Downloader, and the program automatically copies the URL. You then press “Download” to add it to your queue and you’re done. Video Downloader’s Settings include proxies, an optional Fast mode, and the ability to generate a portable version. The Web-based Help manual, forums, and other resources make an easy-to-use tool that much easier.

Wise Video Downloader worked fast and did a good job. It belongs at the top of any queue of YouTube utilities.

My Games: The My Games menu is handy for collecting and quickly accessing your games, but it doesn’t enable specific processes.

More options: We’d like the ability to program and save individual sequences, whitelist processes, and maybe set performance or resource thresholds.

Barring hardware upgrades, your system can use a little help keeping up with ever-evolving game power. That’s where Wise Game Booster enters the scene. It can quickly optimize your entire system or boost just those processes that need it, whether you’re gaming or just computing.

Pros

Common and Advanced Cleaners: The Common Cleaner’s Scheduler can include the Advanced Cleaner in its scans. Advanced Settings include file types and the option to include invalid shortcuts and empty files, which can slow scanning. The Auto Run settings include a Command Line option.

Slimming System: The Slimming System scanner finds software your computer probably doesn’t need. Removing them can reclaim disk space and performance.

Custom one-click: You can create a “Clean with 1-click” icon for the desktop.

Cons

Ads and pop-ups: A pop-up ad appeared as soon as we opened Wise Disk Cleaner Portable, and the interface has another ad. Ads pay freeware’s bills, but these are a bit more annoying than some (though hardly the worst we’ve seen).

Bottom Line

Wise Disk Cleaner 8 Portable is an excellent tool for your portable toolkit. While most users should probably opt for the fully installed version of Wise Disk Cleaner 8 for daily use, there’s no reason you can’t have both!

Wise Data Recovery is a fast, sleek data recovery program, but before you get your hopes up you should know that a large percentage of deleted files it does detect cannot be restored. Still, if you’re in the type of dire straits that you need this program, it’s definitely worth trying.

When you install Wise Data Recovery, be aware that it auto-checks boxes to download other programs. Uncheck these if you don’t want the extras. Once installed, the program lets you scan your hard drive or an external drive for deleted files. It checks to see if they’re still hanging around on your hard drive or if they’ve been deleted for good. You can organize the files it finds by directory, by likelihood of recovery, by file size, or by the date they were last modified. Wise Data Recovery found about 52,000 files on a drive and did it in a matter of seconds. Sadly, about 40 percent of the files were unrecoverable or “poor,” which means there’s a low chance of getting them back. Luckily, most of the “good” files were picture and video files — the stuff you’d probably be looking for. You can recover multiple files at once, but you can’t save them to the drive they came from. The program’s clean, stylish menu makes it easy to find and select the exact file you’re looking for.

Wise Data Recovery looks good and works very fast, finding important video and photo files and other important documents. It will only take a couple minutes of your time to see if this app can recover the deleted files you’re looking for, so there’s no harm in giving it a shot.

When your PC is misbehaving wouldn’t it be easier to press just one button instead of hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del to close programs? Wise Memory Optimizer will optimize your computer’s memory on demand, as often as you like. You won’t even have to close any programs.

This program’s interface is very simple and neat. It graphs your system’s memory on a pie chart so you know how much memory you’re using and how much free memory you have. There is a large green button you need to click to optimize your memory usage. There are also some basic settings at hand and you can choose your preferred language. Not only can Wise Memory Optimizer trim memory usage instantly, it can be programmed to start itself. As long as it’s open, you can tell the program to optimize your memory when it reaches critical levels. That way you never have to deal with a crash when you’re in the middle of something. Even though we found this program to be quite useful, there were some drawbacks. It lacks diagnostic features and hard-drive-analyzing tools, so you won’t know what’s causing the problems. It doesn’t really indicate how it’s making performance better without closing programs, either.

This program won’t impress you much if you’re an overclocker or otherwise tech-savvy, as you could probably do most of the things it does by yourself without trouble. However, if opening up Task Manager and looking at system processes is like reading Latin to you, you’ll love Wise Memory Optimizer. It gives you the performance you crave without you ever needing to crack open a computer manual.
