iBackup Extractor for Mac allows you to pull and view data from any of your devices on your Mac. This data, stored in backup files you make whenever you update or back up your iPhone or iPad, contains things like messages, notes, calendars, and contacts, and can be stored indefinitely on any device, including backup hard drives; so a tool like this is great for accessing information that will never make it back onto a phone.

When you open the app, you can load any of the backup files on your computer. It automatically detects them and populates a list on the top of the screen. You can then click on any of the data types on the left of the screen to pull up a list of all data in that backup file. So it will show all of your messages, notes, calendar entries, images, etc. Whatever is backed up to your computer is in that file. Considering Mac and iOS offer no way to do this natively, it’s a very useful tool, and the interface here is very straightforward. Unfortunately, we ran into a few performance issues, including some hanging and at least two crashes that occurred while loading large data sets like the Calendar from particularly big backup files. Most of the time it worked flawlessly, though.

If you have a lot of backup files or even just one that you can’t access anymore because you have moved on with a new iOS device or deleted that data, iBackup Extractor is a useful tool. It allows you to retrieve anything you might have had stored on an iOS device at any time, and it is free to try (with a $24.95 upgrade price for the full version).

iBackup Extractor allows you to pull pieces of information out of your iPhone backups and work with it.

Pros

Easy navigation: iBackup Extractor is easy to use. Everything is well-labeled, and the design is modern and intuitive.

File access: The absolute best thing about this app is the number and type of files you’re able to extract from the backup. You can recover your contacts, which is vital for many, but also data like voicemails and text messages.

Cons

Installer difficulty: The installer jammed on more than one occasion during program testing. The program installer came in an MSI format, and it had difficulty installing even after a restart.

Unclear help: When trying to learn how to perform specific tasks or troubleshoot, the help was not very illuminating.

Bottom Line

iBackup Extractor is a powerful recovery utility. You can target the specific data that you need, such as contacts or messages, and recover them quickly and effectively.

Tune Sweeper 4 harmonizes your iTunes library and hard drive by purging entries that aren’t on your disk anymore and adding unlisted songs. Duplicates and missing tracks are annoying, but fixing the issue is made easier with Tune Sweeper. It can keep your library tidy in the background, or you can stage mass purges when the issue becomes too big to ignore. Updates to version 4 include Missing Artwork, Fix Track Info, and iTunes Statistics.

Pros

Easy on the eyes: Tune Sweeper 4’s tabbed interface is easy to navigate, and its minimalist style complements the look of iTunes.

Search criteria: We could search for duplicates or missing files by track data, time difference, or media types. For example, we could exclude podcasts and TV shows from searches.

Groups: We could also include or ignore all Groups listed.

Cons

Not free: Unlike iTunes, Tune Sweeper 4 is shareware, not freeware, but it’s free to try with limited functionality (duplicates can’t be removed).

Bottom Line

Tune Sweeper 4 isn’t free, but at just under 20 bucks it might be a bargain, especially if your library is big. If you’ve let things go too far and now have tons of duplicates and missing songs in your ever-growing, all-important iTunes library, Tune Sweeper 4 can help you clean up the mess.

TouchCopy quickly transfers all iPod, iPad, and iPhone content to either iTunes or your hard drive with the click of a button.

Pros

One-click transfers: Though TouchCopy offers a link to a help page, we didn’t need to read it to get started. With the click of a button, the program immediately imported all 200+ photos we had saved on our iPad. Likewise, we were able to just as easily copy those files to iTunes and our PC.

Listen while you transfer: TouchCopy acts as a music player, allowing us to listen to music files while we copied them to iTunes and our PC.

Generous trial period: With the ability to make 100 copies of your imported files, you’ll have plenty of time to check out what TouchCopy has to offer before deciding to buy outright. However, you won’t be able to back up your iPad, iPhone, or iPod content since that feature is exclusive to the paid version.

Cons

Slow to recognize: It took a few tries of us plugging and unplugging our iPad before TouchCopy would recognize the device.

Bottom Line

TouchCopy’s streamlined interface and comprehensive file transfer capabilities will please users of all skill levels. We highly recommend it to quickly back up Apple device content.

As soon as you launch TouchCopy for Mac, you will be notified that you’re running the Demo version, which allows you to copy 100 files for free to your iTunes library. To import more files, or to back up and import files to your Mac’s hard drive, you’ll need to purchase the full version. For testing purposes, we connected an iPad 4 to our Mac and the application found our device in a second, quickly loading all of the media files available. The application interface is intuitive; and using a well-designed graphical menu to the left, you can easily browse through categories such as Music, Photos, Apps, Messages, and the like, and load all of the media files from your iOS device. You can copy files directly to a designated location on your Mac, as well as back up or directly copy to iTunes. It took half a minute for the app to import a 97MB video from our iPad to iTunes on our Mac.

Even if the full version of TouchCopy for Mac performed half as well as its Demo version, it’s still commendable. It’s a well-designed app with top-notch performance offering you everything that you’ll ever want when you need to copy or back up your media from an iPhone, iPad, or iPod to your Mac.
