Older and slower PCs with limited memory resources can benefit from a memory optimizing tool. These tools don’t add memory or alter the way it works (such as by overclocking) but simply free up system resources, usually by purging unnecessary files, emptying caches, and scrounging for available RAM. PC Brother Memory Optimization Free is just such a tool. It displays your system’s memory use and helps you optimize it for your needs. It’s a standalone app that also comes bundled with PC Brother’s System Care, which is also free.

Memory Optimization Free’s basic interface opens in the Usage mode, displaying our system’s CPU, Memory, and Page File Usage as a three-line graph and as individual bar graphs with details. Aside from an Upgrade button and a one-click button labeled Free Now, Usage, Optimize, and Logs are the only controls. In fact, the Optimize button only leads to another Free Now button with a bar graph, plus text explaining how the program frees up memory and processor resources. We clicked Free Now, and the program quickly powered through its series of operations, displaying a message at the finish declaring it had reclaimed 67.22 MB of RAM. With 8GB of RAM available, it didn’t make much difference, but then it didn’t do any harm, either. Clicking Upgrade gave us yet another opportunity to download the developer’s System Care suite. Although this tool proved very easy to use, we’d like to see a Help file and maybe some options.

PC Brother Memory Optimization Free quickly and harmlessly reclaimed useful memory resources. While the reclaimed memory didn’t make much difference in our tight test system, if we’d been running one or two gigs on a 4-year-old low-end PC, it would have been a nice boost; maybe enough to keep the old gears grinding a while longer. Four PC years is like 20 people years, and even geeks get tired of constant upgrading!

Over time, your PC fills up with leftovers, junk files, and digital debris, which makes your system run slower and can even increase its vulnerability to attacks. Software programs designed to clean up and tune up PCs can help you keep your PC in shape, if you use them wisely. Fortunately, even freeware system cleaners have gotten both safer to use and much more versatile. We recently ran PC Brother System Care Free, which offers not only to clean and optimize your files, registry, and disk drives but also to check your security status, manage programs, and provide easy access to Windows tools and services.

PC Brother has the colorful, graphics-heavy type of interface typical of the category, with stylish buttons accessing Utilities and Services and elaborate icons for opening the Cleaner and Optimization tools in the Easy Shuttle sidebar. We clicked the prominent Scan button to start things off and read the Background Maintenance advisory while we waited. It advised activating the program’s background processes, but we prefer not to enable such processes and chose to focus instead on PC Brother’s active processes. The scan quickly identified our Antivirus, Firewall, System Updates, Disk Clean, Registry Clean, and Disk Defrag status, with the option to solve problems individually or all at once. We ran the tools individually, which generally offers more detail about what the program is doing. Under Utilities, we could access the program’s various tools individually, too. We ran the Memory Optimization tool, which tracked our CPU, Memory, and Page File performance and reclaimed more than 50MB of RAM.

We clicked the Service button and were offered the opportunity for a paid upgrade that involves online assistance, but we didn’t take advantage of it. However, our machine rebooted quickly and showed no ill effects, which suggests PC Brother did its job but also did no harm. We like that PC Brother lets users run tools individually or in groups. Once we were more familiar with what its tools and process did, we felt more comfortable about running them with a click.

Computers, like most other machines, require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly. PC Brother System Maintenance Free is a comprehensive suite of utilities that can help your system stay in top condition. Even if you’re not particularly technically savvy, this program has plenty of tools you can use to improve your computer’s performance.

The program’s interface is attractive and easy to navigate. Four tabs–Optimize, Security, Tools, and PC Info–contain the program’s main features. The Optimize tab includes tasks for performance, appearance, network, and security; you can select which of these you want to include and then click the Optimize button to have the tasks performed automatically. We liked it that the program gives you the option of backing up your system settings in case something goes awry during the optimization process. The Security tab lists antivirus software, firewalls, system updates, and shared resources, with suggested actions shown if there’s room for improvement. The Tools tab lists autorun items, currently running processes and connections, and system services. Finally, the PC Info tab lists system, performance, hardware, and storage information. PC Brother System Maintenance Free is an excellent way to get a quick snapshot of what’s happening on your computer and take corrective action if needed. We do wish that the program came with a Help file; although it’s easy enough for anyone to use, many people would likely appreciate more information about some of the program’s features. Overall, though, we liked how easy and effective PC Brother System Maintenance Free was, and we recommend it.
