Trend Micro Antivirus is a powerful malware detection tool that works to boost your Mac’s efficiency in identifying and blocking unwanted software and intrusive processes. It finds the right balance between protection and usability and does so in a way that is accessible to most users.

Pros

Solid malware blocking ability: Trend Micro Antivirus is incredibly efficient in detecting potential problems. This includes checking social media privacy settings, managing your passwords and other encrypted data on your machine, and ensuring proper security for your files when transferring them.

Builds on a strong entry-level tool: Trend Micro Antivirus builds up the entry-level suite in many ways, adding much-needed security tools like password management and online backup.

Cons

Not always a good tool for fixing existing problems: While Trend Micro will protect your machine against intrusion and infection, it’s not as effective in cleaning up an already messy system. Additionally, there are some overzealous protections built in to the system, which can be altered but could be an impediment for some users.

Bottom Line

If you are looking for a powerful antivirus and antimalware app combined with a number of other powerful tools to protect your personal data and your Mac, then Trend Micro Antivirus is a good fit at a reasonable price.

If persistent spyware is bogging down your computer, you might need HijackThis. The tiny program examines vulnerable or suspect parts of your system, such as browser helper objects and certain types of Registry keys. Pressing the Scan button generates a log of dozens of items, most of which are just customizations. Don’t check off an item and hit the Fix Checked button unless you’re sure it’s malware. Clicking Info on Selected Item tells you why the entry was flagged as suspicious, but not whether it’s actually malware. To find that out, search the Web for that item’s name or go straight to a forum, such as SpywareInfo or Computer Cops. Saving the log creates a text document you can post to these forums.

The latest version adds powerful tools to the Config window. The process manager and hosts file editor help you excise virulent infections. The unique ADS Spy tool scans for alternate data streams, which some browser hijackers use to hide from spyware removers. The program still installs into whatever directory in which you unzip the file, which can make it hard to locate. HijackThis is a serious tool for any user who needs to root out a serious infestation, but wield it with caution.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security is the second-highest antivirus offering from Trend Micro. In addition to a robust malware scanner, Titanium Maximum Security offers a built-in password manager, an in-app Web browser, and a packaged set of tools for protecting and managing your Android device. This review focuses on desktop performance.

Pros

Design: Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security shares the same interface as its lesser brothers, the Antivirus and Internet Security editions. The interface has a clean, organized menu layout. Tabs have nice mouseover effects, and the overall app has a modern feel and original visual direction. Though not exactly minimal, Titanium Maximum Security’s five-tab header layout feels uncluttered and easy to navigate.

Scanning: One option we appreciate is the ability to shut down the PC after finishing a scan. This is present during the scanning process, so you don’t have to dig through menus. That’s great, because we often want to shut down after running long tests, especially full scans — this way you can initiate overnight scanning and go to bed. Though full scans are naturally longer, we found the quick scan especially fast and responsive.

Security: Trend Micro quickly responds to security vulnerabilities and automatically removes suspected Trojan horses and malicious files. When we plugged in an infected disk, Titanium Maximum Security quickly deleted the file and displayed a notification from the taskbar with assuring language. Third-party tester AV-Test confirms Titanium Maximum Security’s effective protection: It scored a perfect 100 for protection in malware scanning and beating industry averages.

Cons

Default toolbar installation: Titanium Maximum Security installs a toolbar in popular browsers like Chrome and Firefox without opt-in or -out during installation. Though that practice is common, it’s annoying, and you may be caught by surprise. Luckily, uninstallation is as simple as unchecking the box in the settings panel.

Aggressive: Titanium Maximum Security sometimes considers certain legitimate programs to be malicious and prevents them from running, taking a “better safe than sorry” approach. Quitting notifications individually can be a chore, though you can switch out this behavior in the settings menu.

Bottom Line

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security combines good design with excellent malware protection. Apart from a few quirks, it demonstrates a nice balance of considerate features, and it really shines in up-to-date security, with the numbers to prove it.
