The new 6.0.5 version introduces a revamped interface that addresses the dated look of its predecessor while improving on functionality and intuitiveness.

Pros

Great new interface: The OmniGraffle UI now sports dynamic sidebars that appear when needed and disappear when not in use. An approach similar to Microsoft’s tidying of the Office ribbon might have been preferable, but Omni Group’s revamping of the OmniGraffle interface is good.

Free syncing with OmniPresence: Your projects can be quickly shared with your other Mac or iOS devices through a background synchronization process. You can check what’s being synchronized as well as pause the process at any time.

Presentation mode: This mode eases the presentation of diagrams by going full-screen and making canvases behave like slides. These canvas slides can be moved like a PowerPoint presentation, using either mouse clicks or arrow keys.

Multiple formats for exporting and Visio support: OmniGraffle can export diagrams or other creations in a number of formats, including BMP, TIFF, PDF, JPG, EPS, SVG, Visio XML, PICT Vector, PNG, and PSD. It can also conveniently import Visio XML files.

Cons

Designed for single-screen use: The older version of OmniGraffle let you use two screens; the new version does not. Some users will have to change the way they use the app, but for most users, the single-screen limitation will not be a major issue.

No CAD integration: OmniGraffle lacks support for AutoDesk file formats and cannot integrate CAD.

Bottom Line

Feature-rich and relatively advanced, OmniGraffle may intimidate some users, even those who have tried its earlier versions. Some adjustment to the new interface will be needed, but this application is not that difficult to figure out. It offers a great range of features and outputs beautiful diagrams, wireframes, and sketches.

OmniPresence for Mac includes a well-designed user interface and all of the features expected in a program to sync documents and files across multiple devices. The accompanying free account with the developer’s Web server makes it easy to sync for free, and even includes the ability to drop files into the cloud via e-mail.

After the installation process completes, the program can be accessed via a small icon that sits in your menu bar. The program’s initial menu walks the user through the process of setting up the service. The small window contains a clear color scheme and well-labeled buttons, contributing to its ease of use. To its advantage over other applications, OmniPresence for Mac gives users the option to use their own Web server, if available. For those without one, the application prompts a sign-up for Omni Sync Server on the developer’s Web site. This Web service does not have an obviously listed storage limit, which is an advantage over other competing services. If requested, users can also receive an e-mail address where files can be sent, automatically storing them in the cloud. On the computer, the program creates a folder where documents can be saved for uploading. This allows them to be accessed on other devices with the same application installed, including iPhones and iPads. The uploaded files worked smoothly during testing and were available in the cloud when needed.

With its features, including those available on the accompanying Web server, OmniPresence for Mac represents a great choice for those looking to store files for access across multiple devices.

OmniDazzle for Mac offers a set of desktop enhancements that include visual effects for aiding in presentations or just having a little fun while sitting at your computer. Even though most effects work well, some are a bit glitchy.

Installation was the regular matter of downloading and copying to the Applications folder. When we launched the app the first time, it brought us right to the help screen, which offered a good breakdown of what the app does and how to use it. OmniDazzle for Mac only allows one effect to be active at any time, so we selected our first one–Pixie Dust–by pressing the associated hot key combination. The controls for each effect are explained well and easily reconfigured. We cycled through each effect and tested them out. There are some useful tools for presentations, like Scribble, which allows for drawing on the screen, and Focal Point, which highlights an active window or just an area around the mouse. Most of the tools are just for fun, though, such as the ability to flash a Batman-style “sound effect” on the screen like “POW!” or to overlay a Sonar, which is used to locate the mouse pointer. We found a few of the effects to be glitchy in their application, causing odd flashes and remnant pixels to remain on the screen until the effect was deactivated.

It’s a mixed bag of tricks, but OmniDazzle for Mac could very well have staying power for those with the need to add a little visual fun to presentations.

OmniOutliner is a powerful mind-mapping program designed to help you create all kinds of documents and outlines. Just choose the template that most closely matches the type of document you want to create and the style you’re after, and then start filling it in.

Pros

Lots of templates: Whether you want to outline a family budget of draft a book, OmniOutliner has templates designed just for the purpose. To begin working on a new document, just pick the template and start writing. And if you’re not sure exactly which template is the most appropriate for your purposes, you can view a sample of each of them with some text filled in to give you an idea about how best to use that particular layout.

Searching documents: Since the program makes it possible to create some long and complicated documents, it’s definitely a plus that you can search quickly through the entire thing and focus in on a particular section of interest. Navigation is quick through the outline on the left-hand side of the screen, and you can get right back to the big picture whenever you’re ready.

Cons

Overwhelming help: The help document that comes with this program is very thorough, but it can be a bit overwhelming and unwieldy when you’re just trying to get a few tips to help you get started quickly. A section that’s useful in that situation does exist, but it’s a little hard to find, and you may not want to spend a whole afternoon reading about all of the program’s ins and outs before you start using it.

Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a powerful mind-mapping program, OmniOutliner is worth checking out. It offers a ton of templates and other features, and you can try it for free for 14 days, which is a good amount of time to let you decide whether you’d like to invest $49.95 to purchase the full version.

OmniFocus for Mac integrates seamlessly with Mac OS X to help manage tasks, projects, and other to-dos from a single interface.

Pros

Extremely customizable interface: OmniFocus offers a number of customizable views. With project, context, priority, and date-based organization, combined with custom perspectives and arrangement tools, you can tweak your to-do list for your specific projects. The inbox feature makes adding new tasks incredibly quick, and the ability to quickly add new projects and contexts keeps the information organized.

Lightweight integration in OS X: OmniFocus runs quietly in the background while you work. With a couple keystrokes, you can call up a task entry screen to drop in a quick note for later reference, and the tool then syncs to iCloud or its own cloud server for access on another device or computer.

Cons

Steep barrier to entry: Because of its complexity, OmniFocus may take some time to get started. There are a number of existing templates to help you get started, and the tool offers robust help files. But even with these extra tools, it may take some time to get everything organized.

Bottom Line

OmniFocus for Mac is a sleek piece of software that perfectly integrates the most effective productivity strategies into a single platform. It’s fast, non-intrusive, and with syncing to mobile devices, can be a solid toolkit for your Mac.

Even though OmniWeb for Mac is well designed and equipped with some useful options, this Web browser ultimately doesn’t offer too many additional features that could set it apart from other, more mainstream browsers.

While many browsers compete for users, including Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari, among several others, most offer similar, if not identical, features. Like those browsers, OmniWeb is offered for free but it ups the ante by promising to provide the best user experience. While there were no tutorials, the program’s interface was similar enough to other browsers that it was easy to get started. Well-labeled buttons indicate functions for moving forward, backward, and refreshing pages. The URL area is located in the same area as with most other browsers. One additional button displays tabs, but includes a small thumbnail of the pages instead of just text, which was a helpful feature. Another neat feature is the option to create shortcuts to any Web site. Additionally, there are many preferences options, including menu changes, security, and plug-ins, among others. The pages, themselves, rendered well without any errors, but scrolling up and down did create some minor twitching in the window.

While we didn’t find any revolutionary features on offer, OmniWeb for Mac works well, overall. For those who aren’t happy with their current browser, OmniWeb for Mac is worth a try.

OmniDiskSweeper for Mac comes in a powerful little package and makes the cumbersome job of searching for large and unused files fast and easy. The application performs as intended and offers a rock-solid solution for anyone needing more free space on their Mac.

After an easy installation, OmniDiskSweeper for Mac presented us with a list of hard drives attached to our test machine, and we selected the internal 500GB drive. A new window appeared that populated with a list of folders and files, with their respective sizes listed right next to the name. The full sweep completed in under five minutes. The largest folders top the list with sizes color-coded: gigabytes in purple, megabytes in dark blue, and kilobytes in green. From there it was easy to drill down into each folder, zeroing in on the largest and most useless of files. In another five minutes we had freed up over 45GB of space. Remnant DMG files in our Downloads folder automatically saved, but unneeded Mail attachments, and old documents all unwittingly took up space. We were also able to identify another 25GB of files and folders that will need further scrutiny before we delete them for good.

OmniDiskSweeper for Mac significantly speeds up the process of digging through your hard drive and looking for unused and large files. This application is highly recommend for any Mac user, even for those who haven’t yet approached the danger zone of limited free space.
