Available as freeware, Free YouTube Converter for Mac downloads and installs seamlessly with its own native installer. Upon startup, the program takes the user to the developer’s Web site, where other programs are sold. While a slight nuisance, this is acceptable for a freeware program. The program’s design is well thought out, with large, easy-to-recognize buttons for the main functions of locating files, converting them, and choosing the output folder location.

Support is lacking and the program doesn’t have a button or option to pull videos directly from the Internet. In short, you must already have the video downloaded to your computer for converting. If there was the ability to pull from the Internet, it was not apparent, and there were no instructions stating otherwise. FLV videos do convert easily into other formats. Had it been labeled as an FLV video converter only and not a YouTube converting program, this would have been preferred, since it performs that function well.

Despite its well-designed interface and file-converting ability, Free YouTube Converter for Mac lacks the ability to pull videos directly from the Internet, a critical step for its stated purpose.

They’re grouped first by type, and this list includes everything from Android to Game Hardware to Zune. Once you’ve selected one of these categories, you’ll see the list of specific formats along with the type of device it’s meant to play on, making it easy to find the right option even if you’re not terribly techno-savvy.

Fast conversions: This app completes conversions quite quickly, especially compared to other free apps, which typically only convert at one or two times the speed of playback. Conversions we tried during testing, however, were done at least three times the speed of playback, and sometimes more.

Cons

Format listing: When you’re choosing an output format through this app, you’ll have to sort through a whole lot of unavailable options to find some you can use. That’s because all of the formats available for the paid version of this app are still listed in the free software along with the free alternatives.

Bottom Line

Free MTS Converter does a good job of converting your files from MTS to multiple other formats. It would be nice to not have to scroll through tons of unavailable output formats to find one you can use, but overall, this program works quickly and offers some good options, especially considering the price tag.
