TuNe for Mac displays currently playing song notifications in iTunes, which include the song’s title, artist, and album artwork and last for a few seconds before fading out. While the premise is good, the execution isn’t perfect: The app’s features are broken into three separate apps, which take unnecessary space. Moreover, if you’re using a newer version of OS X that supports Notification Center, you will find the app obsolete since iTunes already notifies you of the next song whenever it’s minimized or the mini player is active.

Unlike traditional apps, TuNe for Mac features three packages: one to start the app, one to adjust the settings, and one to close it. The app has no dock or menu bar icon. Launch it and iTunes will start if it isn’t already running. From then on, you will see text-based notifications in the lower half of your display whenever a new song starts playing. In the preferences, you can set the duration of the notification as well as adjust the color and font of the text.

While functional, TuNe for Mac looks and feels outdated. If you have a system with OS X Lion or newer, you won’t need it because of iTunes and Notification Center integration. This utility will be useful to you only if you have an older machine, and even then it will feel slightly awkward because of its three separate packages.

Mac users have many choices when it comes to note-taking apps, and MacNote3 is a solid choice for anyone wanting one with good search capabilities and AppleScript integration (especially if you’re a fan of the venerable built-in Notepad app of yore).

MacNote3 is a heavy-duty version of the original MacNote, with a good balance between simplicity and power. In addition to basic formatting and editing controls, MacNote3 lets you use links that can launch anything from URLs and files to messages in Mail, which makes this app perfect for to-do lists. You can also search for strings across multiple notes, and you can incorporate AppleScripts, too. The developers have some good suggestions for this, including the ability to automatically generate e-mails from templates.

You can see MacNote3’s old-school roots in its bare-bones interface, but not always in a good way–and it can take some time for novice users to plumb the depths of this app’s capabilities. For anyone who has specific needs, though, especially around scripting or search, MacNote3 can be a good value. This shareware app comes with a 30-day trial.

ResizeIt for Mac successfully modifies large numbers of photos with different sizes and formats. The interface is rather dated but the program performs all of its functions well.

As people take more digital photos, the differing sizes and perspectives make organizing them into albums difficult. ResizeIt for Mac permits users to change these images so that they match in size. The program’s menu was dated and had no graphics or animations for easier identification of functions, but the readme file offered some basic instructions. With just a drag and drop, files can be imported into the program. Options exist for changing the size of the output files, as well as those for file handling and rotating. Selecting the output file type will change all of those in the batch, if needed. The available formats are JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and GIF. Users can also choose the folder where to save images if the option is checked. Users should be careful with the Overwrite Files option, which moves the original to the trash can after changes are applied. During testing, selecting photos for processing was easy and completed quickly. The output images looked good and the program functioned as advertised.

ResizeIt for Mac is an easy-to-use and effective option for resizing digital images with a minimum of work.
