As the name implies, MacMerger for Mac brings the contents of two folders into one. While this is a feature already offered by Finder, this freeware allows you to merge folders more quickly, though it does come with some limitations.

Pros

Easy-to-use, drag-and-drop interface: To merge folders with MacMerger for Mac you just have to drag the folders into the app’s window and click “Merge.” The merging process is fast and error-free.

Lightweight and efficient: No configuration is needed after installation. You can start merging folders right away — problems are unlikely to hinder the process, unless your computer suddenly freezes or shuts down.

Compatible with Mac OS X 10.5: This app even works with the Leopard version of Mac OS X. Generally, there should be no reason not to be able to run it on almost any Mac computer in current use.

Cons

No safeguards against file overwriting: This application does not include the ability to automatically rename files with similar titles to prevent overwriting. Automatic renaming would have been very useful when merging image folders, since photos taken by digital cameras can have the same filenames.

Merging cannot be cancelled: Stopping a merger in progress can cause problems with your files or folders.

Only two folders at a time: Since the application only has two folder slots in its interface, you can’t bring the contents of three or more folders into one simultaneously — you can only merge two folders in a session.

Bottom Line

MacMerger for Mac simplifies the often tedious process of moving similar files into a single folder, requiring that you only drag the folders you want to merge and hit the Merge button. While this functionality is shared by most file management software, including Finder, with this app you can do your work faster.

If you’re willing to pay for those features, you’ll like this app.

Following a quick installation, FileSalvage for Mac’s trial version lets you try out the Expert mode — two others are available for the premium edition. The interface has a clean and modern look that ranges in complexity depending on the selected mode of operation. The app scans files reasonably quickly (1GB/minute) and has a good recovery rate. Two features that will impress you are the ability to scan and retrieve files from disk images (DMG files), and the implementation of a QuickLook-like action, which lets you preview selected files by pressing the spacebar. Another nice touch is the ability to save your scan progress and resume it later from where you left off.

Whether you’re a casual user who occasionally deletes files by accident, or a Mac consultant who does data recovery for clients, FileSalvage for Mac won’t disappoint you. While the price tag may be high for some users, professionals who rely on this type of software will find the performance and features worth the investment.
