Analog clocks are an endangered species, some say, but they’re still the best way to tell time at a glance and from a distance. Style-7’s Analog Clock-7 is a free screensaver that places a customizable analog clock face on your desktop. It includes a digital display for up close and to display the current time for the analog-challenged.

Analog Clock-7 will install itself as your default screensaver unless you uncheck a box on the installer. We chose to uncheck this box and activate the screensaver the usual way, via the Windows 7 Personalize desktop customization interface. We selected Analog Clock-7 and clicked Preview. The default display showed a stark black background with a neon-green clock face about the size of an elementary school wall clock. Clicking the screensaver Settings tab called up a small dialog with an option to set the second hand and a color swatch that called up the usual Windows color picker when we clicked on it. This limits your color choices to your graphics card and your monitor; any color that can be displayed by your system can be used for the clock face. Buttons let you set Analog Clock-7 as your default screensaver and access the developer’s home page, but that’s about it. It displays your system time; it’s not meant to be an international clock. But what it does, itdoes well: it can let you know what time it is at a glance when you’re away from your PC.

Break time is precious, and no one wants to spend it tethered to the computer. Analog Clock-7 can give you the time of day from across a crowded room, and for free, too.

Style 7’s Theme Clock-7 is a free screensaver that displays an excellent representation of the good-old analog wall clock that has served so many classrooms, waiting rooms, and hallways for so long. It has second-hand settings, a date display, and a text feature, but few other options. Its appeal is its standardized, black-and-white, old-school look, a masterpiece of industrial design that has never been bettered. It’s familiar to nearly everyone who can tell time by a clock face, and those who can’t can use it to learn how. It’s clearly visible across most rooms on most computer displays.

Theme Clock-7 installs itself in the screensaver list; we merely had to select it to configure its options and preview its appearance. Under its Settings, we could show the clock’s logo, the current date, or a text message we could enter in a text field. A check box let us choose to display the day of the week, and we could also turn the second hand off or make it run backward, giving a countdown effect. We could click a button to make it our default screensaver, but that’s about it, beyond the typical OK, About, and Home page buttons. We made our selections and clicked OK, and then clicked Preview in the Screen Saver Settings. The clock face appeared on a white background, with the two-letter date abbreviation displayed much like on a wristwatch face, while our text message appeared beneath the center. The graphics are a bit rasterized up close but bold and clear at a distance, which is what this screensaver is clearly designed for; though it’s a bit overwhelming when you’re sitting in front of it, Theme Clock-7 outdoes any digital display at a distance.

It’d be nice to be able to change the font and color of the text and date display, and a red (or red-tipped) second hand might add a nice touch, too. But we’d stop before the temptation to add actual bells and whistles sets in. If you want a desktop alarm clock, they’re available. This screensaver has a simple job that it does well.

Digital Clock-7 is a very basic but attractive freeware screensaver that displays the current time on the user’s desktop. Although some users might prefer screensavers with more features, we liked the sleek simplicity of this one very much.

The screensaver itself is very simple: it displays the time. The time doesn’t move; you can’t change its format, and there are no bells chiming the hour. There are four things about the display that you can customize: the color of the numbers–although the background is always black–the font, the size of the numbers, and whether you want the delimiters (that’s the colons between the numbers) to flash. The screensaver doesn’t have a Help file per se, but it does come with a Readme document that explains the basics of its installation and use. And that’s all there is to it. In a world of screensavers that simulate fish tanks and display images of your favorite pop star (all while playing music, of course) it may seem a bit basic and even anachronistic, but we think it will appeal to users with a certain simple aesthetic. If nothing else, it will keep you well aware of the time if you’re taking your lunch break at your desk.

Digital Clock-7 is free to download and use. It installs politely and uninstalls without issues, should you decide not to keep it. We recommend this program to all users.

Many users prefer an alternative to the system tray clock, and a Windows gadget is the ideal platform. We looked at Digital Clock GT-7, a simple gadget that displays 24-hour time in hours and minutes. If you prefer to tell time in the military fashion, it’s for you. But it’s also great for anyone who needs a 24-hour display of their system time.

Digital Clock GT-7 installs easily. We right-clicked the desktop and selected Gadgets, which called up the Windows gadget manager. This page let us open or uninstall the gadget. Digital Clock GT-7 opened with the time displayed in four digits in the default white scheme against a gray-toned background. We clicked the wrench icon, which called up the program’s settings. Here we could change the color of the digits and make the delimiter colon flash or not. The Windows gadget options let us change the clock display’s opacity, too, and we could drag the gadget around the desktop in the usual way. Other than a Web link, that’s it; but the whole idea behind gadgets is simplicity, and this one stays close to home.

Digital Clock GT-7 is a simple but effective gadget for anyone who wants to view their system time in desktop clock in 24-hour format. It’s free, so even if you only use it now and then, it’s worth keeping around.
