Flash video is so common that a day without FLV files is like a day spent in bed: good in theory but unlikely in practice. Sooner or later you’re going to want to save a Flash clip or file. You’ll need a good FLV recorder, like the easy-to-remember Flv Recorder from StreamingStar Technology. With it, you can record and view video from a vast and ever-growing world of Web-based media. It can automatically save, download, capture, grab, and record FLV video in HTTP protocol as well as Adobe’s proprietary RTMP protocol, which is used for many online Flash applications. It records multiple video streams simultaneously, and it sports a built-in FLV media player so you can view files right away.

The main interface features a sleek, attractive, and well-designed skin like a media player, befitting its simplicity and versatility. It’s divided into two parts, the recorder and the built-in FLV player, each dominated by a main display. On the left-hand side is the recorder’s interface: simple but clear buttons that control all functions and menus, including settings, the Help file, and links to the developer’s Web site, which offers online assistance. The media player’s controls are common to its type, though it does include a full-screen button. It displays videos clearly with good resolution and size. The program’s best feature is undoubtedly RTMP compatibility.

Flv Recorder is free to try for 30 days and costs $15.95 to register. It’s certified for versions of Windows from 98 to Vista, including server editions.

The Internet contains an abundance of entertaining and educational content in both audio and video formats, and sooner or later almost everyone finds themselves wanting to download such content for later use. Fortunately for all of us, many programs have cropped up in recent years to help us with this task. HiDownload is one such program; but, we’re sorry to say, it’s not nearly as user-friendly as some others we’ve encountered.

The program’s interface is plain and doesn’t offer a whole lot in the way of direction. Some of the features were pretty easy to figure out, but others confounded us. The online Help file isn’t particularly well-written, and it was confusing at least as often as it was helpful. We were able to easily download an MPEG file, but other file types didn’t come as easily. There are plenty of mentions throughout the interface and Help file about YouTube and FLV files, but our attempts at downloading and playing them were futile. There were a lot of features alluded to in HiDownload’s interface that didn’t make any obvious sense, and overall we found the program to be frustrating to use. It’s entirely possible that HiDownload is perfectly functional, but why bother to find out when there are so many programs that do the same thing and are much easier to use?

HiDownload has a 30-day trial period. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program with reservations.

This program has no problems detecting URLs, but it could use some assistance with its filtering options and user guidance.

URL Helper’s functional interface requires you to select the correct adapter for your Internet connection from a drop-down list, which may throw the novice user off track. Once you select the right adapter, however, you simply hit Sniff Network. URL Helper begins listing URLs as soon as you start surfing. You can easily start or stop the monitoring process, but a single page can still produce numerous links.

URL Helper allows you to apply filters, but the descriptions for the six options aren’t very helpful. Other settings to exclude file types and color-coded formats like Windows Media files in the results window aren’t intuitive, and the bare-bones Help file doesn’t explain these features.

There’s a short seven-day trial limitation. URL Helper can reveal hidden URLs, but it doesn’t seem to offer the most user-friendly way of getting there.
