Macros and keyboard shortcuts are nothing new, but many shortcut programs are too complicated for the average user. In contrast, this launcher makes it easy to set up shortcuts that launch applications, visit Web sites, paste saved clipboard data, and even control MP3 players.

Using Keyboard LaunchPad is a cinch. First you create new hot keys with a few mouse clicks, or by just dragging and dropping shortcuts, files, or folders into the main window. Next you assign a key combination that triggers the hot key. Then you apply actions to each hot key from a pull-down list of commonly used actions such as linking to a shortcut or URL. You can add actions to the list with plug-ins once you purchase the full version.

All in all, Keyboard LaunchPad is a practical, powerful, and easy-to-use utility. Our only complaint is that the trial does not provide enough hot keys or actions to test the more advanced features.

Stardock Tiles is a program designed to help users organize PC tasks. It’s a neat solution for Windows power users who tend to have a large number of applications running at one time or people who work on a large number of projects at one time.

At the top of the application, you will find labels for each page of tiles such as Apps, Web Browsing, and Documents. Drag and drop is fully supported so adding items is easy. We liked that you can even place open applications on the interface by using the Shift key. If a program is not currently active, it will appear as a standard Windows icon. If an application is up and running, it will appear as a live preview tile. Tiles can be used as a program-launching utility program, or used to organize and keep track of current tasks and projects. The one drawback is that since it runs as a sidebar on the desktop, it reduces the size of other windows and some people might not want to sacrifice their desktop space.

Tiles downloads quickly and easily and uninstalls just as quickly and cleanly. While casual users might not have a need for this program, those with a lot going on will appreciate the easy organization that Tiles brings to their desktop.

Fences is an app that allows you to organize your desktop icons into categories to un-clutter your workspace. The latest version, Fences 2.0, adds new features to help you get and stay organized even faster.

The interface of the newer version is much like before. The fences look the same – they’re clean and blend well, and you can adjust the transparency and color to suit your needs. You’ll also still be able to easily sort your files and program icons into multiple fences on your desktop. One of our favorite features, Auto-Organizer, also lets you choose which files will automatically go into the fence you specify–this is handy if you frequently add new files to your computer.

Fences 2.0 also comes with a couple new features, Folder Portals and Desktop Pages. Folder Portals lets you create a fence from any folder and organize the contents on your desktop for quick access. Desktop Pages lets you set up multiple screens, each with their own set of fences, and navigate between them just by clicking and dragging. While we found it fairly easy to set up and use the fences, we liked the user guidance and tutorials so you can make sure you’re using Fences to its fullest potential.

Users who are overwhelmed by desktop clutter will like the flexibility of Fences 2.0. The installation is easy and quick and you can try the product free for 30 days to see if it’s right for you.

Download LogonStudio Free for Windows

Longing for some change in your life? Why not start with that boring old Windows XP logon screen? With the freeware LogonStudio, choosing another screen is a matter of two clicks. Alternately, you can design your own with a built-in editor.

The first option is a lot easier. About 30 cool screens are available on the WinCustomize site, and the program can randomly select one on every boot. Editing is less straightforward. You build or modify logon screens by tweaking parameters on a lengthy list of elements. So you might, for instance, change the FirstColor parameter of the Centre Panel element to a new shade of blue. This allows you to customize everything from background to letterings to buttons, but beginners will find the process quite confusing. The sketchy online help isn’t much assistance, either.

LogonStudio is best for users familiar with programming languages such as Visual Basic, whose development tools use a similar interface.

Modern Mix is a tweak for Windows 8 that brings users one step closer to the classic Windows experience inside the Modern UI environment. Stardock’s latest release removes the barrier between the Start Screen and desktop by enabling Modern apps to run inside a window. The result is a user experience more in line with the traditional Windows 7 way of displaying windowed applications. Regardless of your feelings about Microsoft’s OS, Modern Mix is a utility that is genuinely useful for the desktop dependent.

After installation, you’ll be introduced to ModernMix’s config menu. By default, any app that you launch from the Start Screen or desktop will now be open in a window. You can change this behavior for both individual launch locations and set ModernMix to launch apps while retaining their last used settings, like window size. If you like the minimal control overlay, ModernMix gives you the option to display or hide modes on the top right corner. If you opt to hide it, the F10 key will toggle between your standard Modern full-screen mode or the classic windowed mode.

Stardock has thoughtfully incorporated many other basic behavioral options. Normally, Windows 8’s charms bar acts as your standard app manager for Modern UI apps. ModernMix takes your Modern UI apps and docks them onto the desktop taskbar to further blur the lines between both environments. Another appreciated option is ModernMix’s ability to constrain app window sizes; many of the apps available from Microsoft’s app store are set at a 768-pixel height or above and aren’t meant for scaling down.

In some cases, the windowed experience didn’t really end up being the best. Many of Microsoft’s apps in Windows 8 are tailored for a full screen experience, so some apps end up being underwhelming at times. This is much more apparent with running games; depending on how you scale the window size; some games like Hydro Thunder, BlazBlue, or Jezzball Galaxy will attempt to scale itself but end up getting cut off at more unconventional resolutions.

Having the option to tweak and mod your computing experience is one of the conveniences of having a PC. If you’re still feeling hesitant about making the jump to Windows 8 but feeling left out from the speedy enhancements, then take ModernMix out for a spin and see if you warm up to it. Combined with Start8, ModernMix and Windows 8 just might be the perfect computing cocktail recipe that will finally push some Win7 users over the tipping point to Windows 8.

Pros:

Appeal: Launch8 brings a fresh take on the modern Start screen by giving you access through a familiar user path to your apps, now more commonly found on mobile devices.

Tweakable: In addition to its clean look, the app dock’s effects can be customized by color and transparency. Icon sizes also scale accordingly to size, should you opt for a larger dock. You can also add both desktop and modern apps.

Accessibility: Recent apps and files pop up in a drawer-like fashion, similar to the drawer found on OS X’s application dock.

Cons:

Constrained: The placement is limited to the top- and bottom-centers of the screen. It would have been nice to have more moveable flexibility in placement, like left- and right-screen alignments. This could have been due to possible interference from the Charms bar.

Final Verdict:

Stardock once again aims to fill the needs of a niche gap, creating a solution set for those who want the best-of-both-worlds functionality on their Windows machines. There’s really not much in terms of heavy features, but then again, it’s a fancy app launcher. Considering the upcoming release of 8.1, I’m not convinced that the modern screen is really as much of a pain to use as Stardock may want you to believe (at least in the area of easy access to apps). But if this pet peeve can be even slightly improved by this dock, perhaps the most effective solutions are simply the easiest ones.

ObjectDock gives you the look and functionality of a Mac interface right on your Windows computer by adding a customizable dock at the bottom of the screen. From here, you can quickly open important programs, and you can even tell the program to mimic the mouse-over zoom effect found on a Mac.

Pros

Configurable and customizable: The initial Dock this app creates contains some basic programs and an icon for the Windows Start Menu. But through the Settings Menu, you can customize the Dock to display whatever programs you want. And you can even specify whether you want all open programs to show up there or not.

Two-part interface: In addition to the Dock at the bottom of the screen, this app also creates a tabbed interface that you can access by clicking on a small bar at the top of the screen. Here you’ll find the Settings Menu, and you can also access all of your other programs, especially if you chose to eliminate the Windows Toolbar when you set up the app.

Cons

One size: The icons in the Dock are only one size, and they are rather large. Depending on the size of your screen, this may mean that they interfere with what you’re trying to do in other programs from time to time.

Variable responsiveness: Programs didn’t always open the first time we tried to click on them in the dock. Although they did always open eventually, it sometimes took multiple attempts.

Bottom Line

ObjectDock is a quick and easy way to give your Windows computer a Mac look. It offers lots of options for customization, which means you can set it up in a way that best suits your needs. While there are some stylistic and performance issues that you may not want to put up with, you can try the app out for free for 30 days to decide if it’s worth spending $9.99 to purchase.

It’s easier than you might guess to customize your PC’s icons with IconPackager. As the name suggests, IconPackager packages icons together so you can replace them all at once instead of the usual way, one by one. It’s shareware that you can try for free for 30 days. The trial version only comes with a few icon packages, but more are available to registered users.

IconPackager’s unique interface combines some of the look of the Appearance and Personalization tool in Windows with browser-like touches such as tabs. IconPackager sorts its main features by function into tabs labeled Look & Feel, with submenus for Icon Packages, Preview, Colors, and Live Folders (disabled in the trial); Icons & Cursors; Settings; and so on. While IconPackager limits the number of packages you can apply, it comes with enough samples to see what the program does and how its icons look and perform, including the default Microsoft Windows icons, in case you need to restore them. You can also add icon packages from your disk or a Web site. The provided packages have names like Flash Live and Junior; we chose Plastic Fantastic (there’s a random option, too). We clicked Apply Icon Package. A pop-up advised us that our desktop and taskbar would restart to apply the icons, but we didn’t have to close any programs or windows and didn’t lose anything when the icons changed. The new icons were nice enough — not really dramatically different from the stock set — but wilder and stranger variations are available online. The Icons & Cursors tool lets you change individual icons and cursors more easily than through Windows. This program has a considerable number of options and settings, even in the free edition. For example, there’s a slider to fine-tune the interface color. A Package Builder lets you create your own packages to use and share.

Even with its trial limits, IconPackager showed us what it can do. But the full version costs less than $10, which is not a lot for a whole new wardrobe of quick-changing icons and cursors for your Windows PC.
