There’s a ton of great content on YouTube and other video Web sites, but if you’re not connected to the Internet, it’s inaccessible. Sothink Web Video Downloader for Firefox is a browser extension that makes it easy to download a wide variety of different types of videos so that you can view them no matter where you are.

The add-on installs easily and appears as an icon to the left of Firefox’s address bar. The icon is grayed out when Sothink Web Video Downloader doesn’t detect a downloadable video, but it becomes colored and animated when it does. Downloading a video is as easy as clicking the button, selecting the destination location, and clicking OK. The extension then opens a new Web page that shows a progress bar depicting how much of the file has been downloaded. We downloaded several videos in different formats and didn’t encounter problems with any of them. Although the FLV format, which is found on YouTube and other Flash-based video sites, is probably the most common format that users will encounter, the extension can also handle MOV, AVI, WMV, and a few other file types. Sothink Web Video Downloader also comes with an optional FLV player, a nice touch since most media players can’t play FLV files. Overall, Sothink Web Video Downloader for Firefox didn’t do anything that we haven’t seen many times from other browser extensions and applications, but it works just fine for what it is.

Sothink Web Video Downloader for Firefox installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this extension to all users.

Pros

Quick learning curve: Completely self-explanatory, Sothink Logo Maker’s interface allows even novice users to start designing logos right away. Within 10 minutes we had a good idea of the menus, and 30 minutes later we had completed logos that looked clean and professional.

Number of options: It’s hard to find a subject, shape, or effect not covered by the available resources. The import function also works fine, but without covering that many formats.

Professional results for low cost: Sothink Logo Maker 3.5 can truly deliver pro-level results at the low cost of $35. It can literally save you or your company hundreds of dollars from expensive software or external graphic design services that demand intensive interaction while providing similar results.

Cons

High-end logo design: Elaborate logo designs that require structured layer effects and possibly work on a tablet are too advanced for this app.

Not the industry standard: Heavy-hitting Adobe or Corel suites leave little room for entry. If you wish to design logos professionally for others, customers will very likely demand that you use one of the more popular applications.

Bottom Line

In the end, Sothink Logo Maker succeeds in being an excellent and easy-to-learn logo designer at a very affordable price. We recommended it for personal as well as professional use, whether you want a logo for your company or design logos as a graphic designer for your customers.

Sothink Video Converter Pro offers a comprehensive range of format and resolution options through an accessible interface. The encoding profiles are categorized to serve the needs of computers, streaming applications, smartphones, tablets, and game consoles, proving to be easy to use.

Pros

Very intuitive: We liked the Sothink Video Converter Pro interface because it’s clean, ergonomic, and straightforward for novices. Everything is easily attainable: actions at the top, conversion options concentrated in five drop-down menus at the left, and file management in the main pane.

Batch processing: This is a lifesaver that boosts productivity, but we would like to be able to choose different options for each clip in the batch.

Photo extraction from video: We automatically extracted images at a rate of one capture per second of running video, in native or higher/lower resolution. It’s very practical for taking sample images or putting backgrounds in video titles.

Cons

Average conversion rates: Our tests on a dual core laptop started from a 1080p 111MB MP4 file and took 3:48 to convert to a standard quality 480p FLV file, 4:57 for a standard quality 480×320 Android MP4 file, and 11:00 for a high-quality 720p iPhone MP4 file. Conversion times are comparable to freeware apps.

Unlocking options: Most encoding options are reserved for the full version that costs $24.95. At least SourceTec clearly marks which option is available or locked without tiresome pop-up messages or diversions to unnecessary links.

Subtitles and video trimming: We have not located the subtitle loading feature. Video trimming is definitely out of place here.

Bottom Line

A very intuitive application, Video Converter Pro targets those who want conversions for specific devices. You will like the interface and the batch processing feature, as well as the overall accessibility of the app. However, if you are an advanced videographer looking for more flexible editing features and more conversion options, you can turn your attention to NLE software.

Think Free Movie DVD Maker lets you compose and burn high-quality DVDs from your movie clips. It handles a wide range of video formats as well as DVD output types, including HD DVDs up 1080p in resolution. With drag-and-drop, clip editing, zoom mode, and menu options, it can produce high-quality DVDs compatible with any DVD player. Free Movie DVD Maker places a splash screen before segments; a premium version removes the ads and includes lifetime support and updates.

The thing we like best about Free Movie DVD Maker’s user interface is the easy way you can toggle between Detail and Thumbnails views, not to mention the slider that lets you scale the view to see both details and thumbnails. We could also turn off thumbnails altogether. We added files by dragging and dropping them into the program and by clicking Add. We could move clips up and down to change the playback order. A sidebar to the right of the main view is tabbed for three features: Settings, including burner, disc size, TV format (NTSC or PAL) and zoom mode (letterbox, pan-and-scan, and stretch); Advanced, which let us further customize our settings; and DVD Menu, which includes options such as fonts and buttons. A helpful preview displays each page’s content as thumbnails. The only glitch, if we can even call it that, came when we tried to load a video titled in non-Western characters. A pop-up message flagged the nonstandard video and advised us to close the clip and rename it, which we did. Subsequently, it loaded normally in the program’s queue. You don’t have to burn a disc right away: Free Movie DVD Maker will save your project as a DVD file you can burn later (we did both). The program’s Help file includes sections specifically for Beginners and Advanced users.

We made our choices and clicked Burn. The program created our DVD in very respectable time, though of course your system’s resources will bear on the overall speed. Each clip’s progress was tracked in the main list. End result? Our finished DVD played normally in our DVD player.

Highly customizable: This app provides multiple options for choosing which browsers you want it to monitor and which types of files you’d like to download. That means that you don’t have to deal with the download buttons when you don’t want to, and you can adjust these settings at any time.

Cons

Failure to capture: During testing, the program failed to capture videos in both Chrome and Internet Explorer even though both were selected in the Menu. Other browsers worked with no issues.

No manual option: There is no option in this program to manually enter the URLs you want to download videos from. So if the automatic download feature isn’t working for some reason, the program is essentially useless.

Bottom Line

Sothink Web Video Downloader has a nice interface and is convenient when it works. You can try it out for free for 30 days to see if it’s the right program for you, and it’s $19.99 if you do decide to buy it.
