StuffIt Expander is a file compression and expansion utility that can handle a number of different file archive formats. It’s a free app available from the App Store and several other Web sites, and it installs quickly.

StuffIt Expander supports a number of file formats, including ZIP, ZIPX, 7ZX, RAR, and TAR. The StuffIt Expander interface is clean, allowing you to create archives by the usual drag-and-drop method or by menu actions. Clicking on an archive file can unpack that archive. You can add password protection to your ZIP files. There is a registration nag that appears with StuffIt Expander, and while you don’t need to register to use the tool, the nags will get annoying as time goes by.

We tested StuffIt Expander on a number of archive files created by several methods on different machines. While the app worked fine with ZIP and ZIPX files, we did have occasional problems with RAR files, some of which StuffIt Expander simply couldn’t open properly. Whether this will be fixed shortly or not remains to be seen. Since Mac OS X includes an Archive utility, the real reason users would want a supplemental tool is for RAR and other archives not supported by the included Archive app. Unfortunately, because of these problems opening RAR files, we uninstalled this app.

Users looking for a tool to extract multiple archive types may be disappointed by the bare and clumsy interface of this latest iteration of StuffIt Expander.

The utility fulfills its promise to handle more file types than past incarnations, which had been limited to .SIT and .ZIP files. According to its comprehensive Help file, StuffIt Expander 13.0.1.1 can now handle more than 30 file types, including .GZIP, .HQX, .TZ, .7z, and .UU. Unfortunately, the program is hampered by a ’90s-era user interface, limited functionality, and poor integration with Windows. On opening–and every time you return to the main window–the application insists on searching your computer for all supported files. You can sort the resulting list by file name but not by size, location, or file type. You cannot open more than one archive at a time, and the application cannot automatically create a folder for the archives you do expand. In addition, there is no Windows shell integration, and contrary to the publisher description, you cannot drag files onto the application window or its icon to prompt expansion.

Of course, the one thing that StuffIt Expander does offer that other file-extraction tools don’t is the capability to open StuffIt (.SITX) files, a popular Mac compression format. If you come across .SITX files regularly–or ever–you have little choice but to use this utility. Apart from using it to complete that chore, however, few users will be pleased with what this utility offers.

Stuffit Expander is a free decompression utility that may still be of use to some users — especially, for example, when trying to decompress older Stuffit (.sit or .sitz) archives.

Many users will do fine with just the built-in Archive Utility in Mac OS, which handles .zip files and a wide variety of .tar archives and tarballs — but older and boutique utilities like Stuffit Expander can help when handling more unusual formats, such as .rar files and esoteric suffixes like .kgb, .7z, and .arc. Stuffit Expander lets you decompress files with a quick drag and drop, or through the file menu, and the app handles more than 30 file formats.
