DiscLabel allows you to create your own custom CD and DVD graphics, labels, case inserts, and more, all through a convenient interface. This program offers all kinds of options and tools, making it possible to create just about any design you can imagine for your discs.

Pros

Multiple formats: You can easily create a label or case insert with the list of layout options along the left-hand side of the screen. Possibilities include case covers, designs for the spine of the case, and those for the face of the disc, itself. You can create designs for multiple pieces simultaneously and switch back and forth between them at any time while you’re working.

Feature-packed: There are almost no limits to the designs you can create with the tools in this program. From lines and shadow boxes to shading and clip art, you have everything at your disposal that you’ll need to make your disc covers your own. There are also templates you can use to get you started, or you can create a unique design completely from scratch.

Cons

Time to learn: The only real drawback to this program is that it offers so much that it can be a bit overwhelming to learn to use. The tutorial video does a good job of providing an overview of what kinds of things the program can do, and it also gives you an idea of where to find different kinds of tools. But the only way you’re really going to get good at using this program is to play with it on your own.

Bottom Line

DiscLabel offers a ton of great features to allow you to create beautiful custom disc case designs. While it may take a while to learn, the investment is worth it, if you find yourself doing this type of work frequently. The program is free to try, and the full version costs $35.95.

A handy, little utility, Text Expander for Mac lets you configure keyboard shortcuts that automatically expand into larger snippets of text as you type.

We installed the program without hassle, and when we ran it for the first time were presented with a basic tutorial, which got us working with the app quickly. Text Expander for Mac comes with several built-in “snippets,” as they are called, for frequently typed bits of text, like e-mail and snail mail addresses, phone numbers, or the time and date. Snippets are highly configurable. We created a form letter that, when activated, launches a little dialog box with a blank field for the name. We typed in the name, hit “OK,” and then the full text of the letter appeared in Word. We were able to generate a TinyURL on the fly, simply by copying a link to the clipboard and then typing “/tinyurl” in our document. The program then used a script to create the TinyURL at the Web site, and then pasted it directly where we typed. The possibilities seem limitless with what Text Expander for Mac can take on. The app offers a backup function for all your snippets, and a feature that allows for syncing with other computers and even iOS devices, as well.

Text Expander for Mac, quite simply, seems to be one of the cooler and more original apps available. Anyone who finds themselves doing a lot of repetitive typing would do well to give the fully-functional demo a try.

Editing PDF files by adding or correcting text, signatures, or images requires specialized software. PDFpen for Mac allows users to modify PDFs in a simple but efficient program.

Downloading PDFpen for Mac took much longer than expected on a high-speed connection, but installation completed quickly. The program has extensive instructions and tutorials to walk the user through its functions. This is a welcome addition to such a unique and comprehensive program, and better yet technical support does appear to be available. The program immediately brings up a menu where the user can select PDF files with which to work. A top menu has buttons for editing features, including options like highlighting and adding text. Boxes for notations and adding URL links are also among the numerous editing options. All functions performed well and as expected, and the program output matched that of the original PDF. The menu design does appear to be dated, but the program’s overall functioning does not make this much of a distraction. The free trial version of PDFpen places a watermark on output files.

PDFpen for Mac performs all of its expected functions well, despite its basic interface. So it will most likely satisfy Mac users who are looking for a solid PDF editor.

PDFpenPro resolves one of the biggest issues users have with PDF documents — their intractability when edits are needed. Rather than requiring expensive first-party software for edits or a source file, PDFpenPro allows you to quickly and easily edit the documents, changing text, highlighting segments, and adjusting on-page elements. It’s not as powerful as the full Acrobat suite, but it’s close and it’s a lot more accessible.

When you open PDFpenPro, you’re asked to register for ease of updates and file saving, but it’s not required. You can then immediately start opening and editing files. It’s very easy to do and we were surprised by just how fast it works. Editing text, highlighting, copying, and pasting was done in split seconds and didn’t take the usual five to ten-second delays that you’ll find in a lot of other PDF editors. The result is an app that will prove very useful if you need to make annotations to a PDF, highlight text, or even edit the text within the document. The interface is clean but easy to navigate and feature rich and everything is really fast – one of the primary benefits of this app.

If you need a new and more accessible PDF editor, consider PDFpenPro. From adding text to the Apple-specific Mac OS X features you want and need in a PDF editor and creator, this app works well from top to bottom. It is free to try and the full version is $99.95, so it is comparable to Acrobat but with a lot more OS X-specific features — and you can’t beat the speed here.
