Audio Companion promises a suite of features for ripping, recording, and converting audio files, and at first glance, we thought it would be a useful application. Unfortunately, the program doesn’t deliver everything it’s supposed to.

The program’s interface is quite plain, but is easy enough to figure out. Its major features, the CD Ripper, Audio Splitter, and Batch Processor are separated into tabs. The program rips audio files from CDs and saves them as WAV files; although the publisher’s description promises that files can be converted to the MP3 format as they’re being ripped, we didn’t find any way to do this. Otherwise, that feature worked well enough, although the program does not have any way of securing album or track information. Next we tried the audio splitter, which also worked well; we were able to record sounds both from within our computer (a YouTube video playing) and with our computer’s built-in microphone. The program’s batch processor audio converter, however, did not work as advertised. Every time we tried to convert our ripped WAV files to MP3s, we got an error message. A visit to the program’s built-in Help file revealed that it doesn’t actually come with an MP3 encoder, and that users must seek out and download one on their own. Why bother, when there are so many other audio programs that easily convert between MP3 and other audio formats? Although Audio Companion isn’t awful, overall, we felt it was more trouble than it was worth.

Audio Companion is free to try, but some features are disabled in the trial version. The program installs politely but leaves a folder behind on upon removal. We do not recommend this program.

We remember trying to play along with our favorite songs when we were learning to play bass guitar and struggling, because the songs moved faster than our neophyte fingers could. We wish we’d had Amazing Slow Downer for Windows then. This innovative tool allows users to change the speed of audio playback using a simple slider, and it’s a great tool for anyone trying to learn to play along with their favorite songs.

The program’s interface is plain, but it’s well organized and intuitive. Amazing Slow Downer’s controls are represented by a series of sliders and drop-down menus. We liked that the Amazing Slow Downer could handle digital audio files and CDs; we tried it with both and it worked fine. The application has multiple useful features, including the option to set start and end points for looping; this allows users to listen to the most challenging part of a song over and over again until they master it. The speed slider has quite a large range, and allows users to increase speed above normal if desired. The program also has an equalizer and a karaoke option that reduces (but does not entirely eliminate) the vocal track. The program’s built-in Help file is well written. Overall, we found Amazing Slow Downer for Windows to be quite fun and easy to use, and we think it’s a great choice for anyone who’s learning an instrument.

Amazing Slow Downer for Windows is free to try, but the trial version will only play the first two tracks of a CD and the first quarter of an audio file. The program installs politely but leaves a folder behind upon removal. We recommend this program to all users.

Amazing Slow Downer for Mac is an impressive piece of software that will slow down your music files or CD tracks on the fly without having to record them first, making it a perfect fit for burgeoning musicians. Because it works with your CD-Rom drive and doesn’t require recording, it is faster and more accessible than other software that offers similar functionality.

Installation of Amazing Slow Downer is fast and the app will load immediately once you have unzipped the DMG file. The interface is all on one screen and is a bit dated. Without a clear tutorial onscreen you’ll be clicking around to find the right buttons, but there is a Help file and the brief menus make it easier to pick this software up and use it even without clear instructions. The features here are unique, allowing you to play back any track on a CD or from your MP3 library at one to 400 percent speed without losing any pitch. The result is a perfect app for learning the notes in a song or dissecting a track on a note-by-note basis. Combined with numerous options for how to play back those tracks, make comments, or annotate, it’s a great tool.

Amazing Slow Downer is free to try but does have some restrictions in the number of tracks it will play back on a CD pending a paid upgrade. Even still, if you are looking for a solid playback tool to slow down tracks while learning or editing, this is a great option and well worth trying.
