MakeiPhoneRingtone is a free utility that can convert unprotected AAC files into ringtones for your iPhone. Since the iPhone limits ringtones to 40 seconds or less, however, you will need to first use a separate audio-editing application to shorten most songs to the acceptable length–and, if necessary, use that app or iTunes to convert the song to an AAC file. (If you try to convert a longer file, an error dialog will recommend Fission, from the developers of MakeiPhoneRingtone, but any similar app will work.)

Once you have a file of the appropriate length and format, this utility is extremely simple. Just drag the file onto MakeiPhoneRingtone, and the ringtone will appear in your iTunes under Ringtones, which will then appear on your iPhone after your next sync. This latest version fixes an issue with MakeiPhoneRingtone’s Help menu.

Piezo for Mac successfully detects and records the output coming from your apps or built-in mic and allows you to save the recording as an MP3 or AAC file. This premium app comes with a demo mode and features a pleasing skeuomorphic design that resembles a physical recorder. Overall, the software works well but is limited to recording from only one source at a time.

When launched, Piezo for Mac presents you with its main interface and a detailed user manual. The default action is to record using the built-in mic, but a drop-down menu would allow you to choose any app instead. The biggest drawback of the app is the inability to record sound from both an app and the built-in mic at once, which decreases your productivity. In terms of other features, you can set a name, comment, and a file format for every recording, as well as choose between five audio qualities spanning both the MP3 and AAC formats. Other notable options are the play-thru capability and the setup of a custom output folder, which can be automatically opened after recording.

If you want to record the remote side of a voice conversation, or need a voice memo application, Piezo for Mac can get the job done without much hassle. The multitude of output qualities and the popular supported formats will save you from having to do additional conversions in order to share the media.

Audio Hijack Pro for Mac records audio from a variety of sources and gives you the tools to process it for multiple purposes. It offers a complete set of options for both recording and conversion, and its interface, while rather utilitarian, is straightforward enough to make the program accessible to users of all experience levels.

Pros

Record from anywhere: This program can record from all kinds of sources on your Mac. You can use it with a DVD Player, iTunes, QuickTime Player, RealPlayer, and Safari. And you can quickly record calls you make on Skype and iChat through it as well.

Processing options: Once you’ve made your recordings, you have some options in terms of what to do with them. The processing side of the program lets you select what you want to use the recording for and what quality you want it to be. For instance, you can process something for Internet Distribution with either High or Low quality, and there are plenty of other options as well.

Cons

Extra installation: The basic program that installs initially requires a restart every time you want to record from a new source. In order to avoid this, you can download an extra Instant On feature, but it’s unclear why this couldn’t just be included in the main download to begin with.

Bottom Line

Audio Hijack Pro for Mac provides a good deal of functionality through a straightforward interface. While it may require some extra installation steps to get it exactly the way you want it, the quality of the program is worth it in the end. You can try this app for free, and the full purchase price is $32.

LineIn for Mac enables those with good speakers on their Mac systems to play audio from external devices. While some operational glitches exist, this application adds some functionality to Mac systems, but ultimately not enough to recommend it for most users.

The program’s small size allowed for a quick download and installation. LineIn for Mac is free, which is readily apparent in its basic interface. There are few graphics to guide users and the lack of a tutorial is noticeable. The menu has a line for input and another for the output. Once the appropriate option is selected, an additional button activates the program. Unfortunately, the default options were problematic on the test computer. When initiating the application, the Mac’s microphone immediately began creating an unpleasant feedback. Once the input was properly adjusted to the correct settings, the program worked as intended. The output sound generally matched that of sounds coming from the testing computer, itself. There were no other options, which made the program less useful than it could have been had there been even basic ones, such as finer audio adjustments.

LineIn for Mac’s lack of any advanced features limits its usefulness, but for those who need this type of functionality, it works fairly well with some user input.
