FreeMemory for Mac is a utility to free up unneeded memory in your Mac OS X device. It is available for free from the App Store and download sites. It installs easily.

The goal of FreeMemory for Mac is to mark blocks of memory that were used by terminated applications as free, allowing them to be used by other applications. When run, FreeMemory for Mac checks what memory is allocated and whether it is associated with a running app. If not, then it is freed up, allowing for other apps to run. Activated by clicking on the menu bar icon, FreeMemory for Mac takes just a few seconds to run and can show you the results in a graph. You can set FreeMemory for Mac to run automatically, or just run it when you think your system is performing under standard.

We used FreeMemory for Mac on a MacBook that ran games and virtual machines. We were always running into memory issues after these apps terminated, but FreeMemory for Mac quickly released the blocked memory. The reports afterward show we could gain almost a gigabyte in some cases. Simple to use and with the autorun setup almost out of mind, FreeMemory for Mac is a handy free utility.

Disk Diag allows you to quickly scan your hard drive and check for files that can be deleted to free up space, a very useful tool for Macbook Airs or older Macs with limited space. While it doesn’t offer more advanced tools for cleaning up hard drives, the interface is very clean, and you can find everything you need in just a couple of minutes rather than waiting for a 30+ minute scan.

After installing Disk Diag, which goes directly to your Applications Folder and can be accessed from Launchpad, you must select your Home folder. Once done, you can run scans anytime and they will run in just a couple of seconds. Keep in mind that the app has its own definitions of what can be deleted so always check the list it provides of old files you don’t need. The list includes Download folders, browser data, mail downloads, and other files that some people like to keep. You can turn them off at any time with the click a button. When set, hit “Delete” and it will wipe the files. It’s a great looking app, the interface is very intuitive, and the resulting free space will help your computer run faster if you’re always short.

As a basic snapshot of available and used disk space, FreeSpace Tab for Mac works well and easily integrates into the Mac operating system.

Once initiated through the applications folder, FreeSpace Tab for Mac starts, but has no menu to speak of. The application installs a small icon on the Mac’s top menu bar. Clicking on this brings up a drop-down listing of all available drives. A bar also visually represents the space used and what remains. This is clear and easy to read, and most Mac users will have no problem finding their way. Outside drives can also be ejected by clicking a menu option, which is a welcome feature. Users can apply a small lock icon to exclude any mounted volume from the Eject All option. The drives on which the program was tested displayed accurate usage readings. Although most won’t need it, there is a rather small FAQ section available on the developer’s Web site.

For those looking for an easy-to-use program for quickly viewing available drive space, FreeSpace Tab for Mac would be a useful addition to their Macs.

Memory Diag for Mac allows you to quickly control memory usage. The app runs quietly in the background and will display overall memory use with a click to an icon in your taskbar. Even for those that are not comfortable working with other memory management apps, this one is easy enough to use that you can gain the benefits it provides in just seconds.

Pros

Easy installation and initial use: Installation of Memory Diag takes only seconds, and it almost immediately appears in your taskbar with a prompt for how to access it. Click the icon at any time, and you’ll see a visualization of your current memory usage broken down by different categories and color coded. There are theme options and view settings to update and optimize how this looks as well.

Automated optimization options: Memory Diag has an “Optimize” button that allows you to quickly clear file cache and open up memory on your system in just seconds.

Cons

Additional features require separate apps: Memory Diag performs its core function perfectly. It’s fast, intuitive, and easy to use, but other disk and system utilities will require separate apps, each with their own cost. If you need a more comprehensive system diagnostic tool, this won’t necessarily cover it.

Bottom Line

For those that only need a basic memory management and optimization tool, Memory Diag will get the job done. The next time your computer is running slower than you’d like, this app will come in handy.

Wake Up Time is a clock app for displaying the time, setting an alarm, and setting custom sounds. Wake Up Time is a fairly simple app in what it does, but it’s handy when you want a larger clock display on your device. Wake Up Time installs easily.

The Wake Up Time interface shows an image of a clock radio. Time is shown on a simulation of an LED display. You can set multiple alarms with customizable snooze duration. The sound can be customized to whatever you wish. The free version of Wake Up Time is fairly basic but you can upgrade to add extra sounds. Unfortunately, there’s only one alarm that can be set at a time, which is a limitation. Also, there’s no real menu interface. Both features are promised in a future upgrade.

There are quite a few clock apps on the market. Wake Up Time is graphically attractive, although we found the display a bit small on the screen. Also, the lack of multiple alarm settings (a curious omission as this would be easy to implement, you would think) as well as the need to buy more than the basic sound set will cause a lot of people to skip over this app.
