Though lacking in features, this free screensaver imbues your desktop with a sense of calm. As you’d expect, Flight Over Sea simulates a glide over open water, not far above the ocean’s surface. The scene consists of sea, sky, and clouds–all reasonably well drawn–and a soothing New Age soundtrack. The tiny feature set allows you to turn the music off and set the resolution as high as 1600×1200 pixels. However, you can’t control the angle of the flight, and the simulated motion made us a bit queasy. Also, after a few runs monotony began to set in. We wished for some optional features on the water’s surface–islands and reefs, for example. Nevertheless, since it costs nothing, we can suggest Flight Over Sea to those in search of a peaceful interlude.

Screensavers have long outworn their welcome, but some people still refuse to live without them. If you wouldn’t dream of having a blank black screen when your computer is idle, Solar System – Earth 3D Screensaver is for you. It shows you our planet in all of its glory.

The goofy early-’90s sci-fi music this application features is a weird choice, but it doesn’t totally detract from the screensaver. As for the image, it’s a cool spinning Earth that is actually fun to watch. It isn’t the most accurate view of Earth you’ll ever see, but it is pretty. Amusingly enough, if you still had a monitor where screen burn-in was an issue — which is the reason for screensavers — then this screensaver doesn’t move enough to absolutely prevent it. When you stop using the screensaver, you’re greeted by a request that you pay $17 for the full version of Solar System – Earth 3D Screensaver.

If you still love screensavers, this one is a delight to look at. It will keep you entertained and will look especially attractive on larger screens. Don’t waste your time with the paid version, though. The free Solar System – Earth 3D Screensaver works well enough to not need the upgrade.
