Paint.com provides an excellent set of tools for perfecting digital photographs. While it doesn’t do much of anything to separate itself from the competition, its performance and attention to detail prove it belongs at the top of the heap.

The program’s interface is impressive for two reasons. First, it offers a large selection of command and design icons, and, secondly, it lays them out in a very intuitive and uncluttered manner. We felt right at home from the start, even though we have little graphic design experience. The program’s main function allowed us to apply some fairly standard elements to our photographs. From using color filters to drawing shapes and changing color and shading, Paint.com was able to handle every function smoothly. The controls were incredibly easy to operate but nothing we hadn’t seen in a dozen other photo editing programs. The same went for the special features, which allowed us to manipulate the photo with a variety of distorting and bending masks. These, too, felt familiar and are functions frequently found elsewhere. Overall, Paint.com falls somewhere between Adobe’s Photoshop, the top graphics package, and Microsoft Paint, which is bundled with Windows. Regardless, the program’s presentation and interface were of such high quality that Paint.com deserves to be placed among the top photo editors available at any price.

Paint.com is freeware. It installs desktop icons without permission. While it doesn’t revolutionize the field, this program is one of the finest editors we’ve tested, and we recommend it.

RealWorld Cursor Editor provides all the tools you need to modify an existing mouse cursor or to create an entirely new one from scratch.

Pros

Integrated test area: Along RealWorld Cursor Editor’s left side panel you’ll find a testing area where your mouse cursor is temporarily replaced with the one you’re designing. In addition to being able to test the design right then and there, you can also draw with the new cursor to see if its “hot spot” is in the right place.

Support for animated cursors: You can create animated cursors by importing each animation frame as a separate image file, or you can use the handy animation tools present in the software to generate those additional images from your original one. With the built-in animation tools you can create moving cursors, circling dots, fire-like particles, and a few others.

Layer support: Like most sophisticated image editors, RealWorld Cursor Editor lets you use multiple layers in order to alter an image with non-destructive edits. You can create and delete layers, reorder and disable them, and even set a custom opacity and blending mode.

Cons

Overcrowded interface: We feel that the interface layout and the choice of functions displayed in the toolbars is not optimal. Many functions, such as the Custom JavaScript Operation function, have a dedicated button on the toolbar and yet they are not regularly used to warrant such a prominent placement; another nitpick is that the side panels cannot be hidden from the View menu.

Bottom Line

RealWorld Cursor Editor tries to strike a happy medium between power and usability, and even though there’s room for improvement, the app succeeds in its goal. Whether you want to add a quick graphic to an existing cursor or create an advanced cursor from scratch, you’ll find all the tools you need right inside this software.

We can see how people would either love or hate Picture Resizer. Those with a geeky bent, especially those used to working with command-line parameters, will probably find the program to be innovative and useful. Those who like intuitive interfaces that are easy to understand and navigate will likely take one look at it and then start searching for another program to meet their resizing needs.

There are three ways to use Picture Resizer. Users can drag and drop images onto the program’s icon, choose the program from the Windows context menu after selecting the desired images, or access the program via the command line. That all sounds simple enough, especially the first two options. What’s unique about Picture Resizer is the way that users adjust its settings; everything is done by renaming the program. Do you want your images to be resized to 400 by 300 pixels? Rename the program as PhotoResize400x300.exe. Do you want the smaller dimension of the image to be 400 pixels? PhotoResize_400.exe. The program’s online Help file explains all of this and includes instructions not only for resizing but also for sharpening, changing the compression quality, copying the metadata, and other tasks. The Help file also explains the advanced configuration options that can be accessed using the command line. Overall, we thought that Picture Resizer was an interesting and unique program; we’ve reviewed a lot of software that resizes images and we’ve never encountered any that worked quite like this. It can definitely simplify the process of resizing images, especially if you’re willing to take the time to get familiar with the way it works.

Picture Resizer requires no installation. We recommend this program to intermediate and advanced users.
