iGetter lets you grab files from any URL and save to your computer. There are tools and settings aplenty, so you may have to spend time acclimating yourself to get the most from the software.

Pros

Interface: iGetter’s compact interface stays clean and fairly easy to navigate, with icons for the main features that resemble those of a media player and a tree view of the main folders, so you can see where your downloads are or view the files you’ve already downloaded. We opted to close the Details view at the bottom for an even more streamlined interface. When expanded, Details include a file preview, file details, and options to burn a CD.

Browser integration: Although you can use the software’s main interface, you’ll also find iGetter as an option when any download initiates and on your browser’s context menu. It’s just a couple clicks to download all the files on a page, and you can uncheck any you don’t want before the download starts.

Cons

Complex: iGetter certainly does more than your browser’s built-in file download tools, but that also means most will need to crack open the Help file for some of the advanced settings.

Bottom Line

Casual users can skip this one, but if you frequently download files from the Internet, iGetter may be just the tool for you.

iGetter is a download management app for MacOS. We could not find iGetter on the App Store but it is available from several download sites and the publisher’s Web site. iGetter installs easily. You can use iGetter for free as a single use license with no expiration, or buy a license with full support for $25.

The iGetter interface consists of a number of icons across the top of the dialog and a status display for files beneath. It can launch automatically when you start a download, or you can use iGetter to initiate the downloads. There are two parts to iGetter: the download manager and the download accelerator. The manager lets you handle a list of files to be transferred and start or stop them as needed, and it allows multiple downloads at the same time. The accelerator uses segmented downloading over several streams to accelerate the download process, especially helpful with larger files. As with most download utilities, iGetter lets you resume a download that got interrupted or paused, so you don’t have to start the entire download again. Nice graphics show you the progress of downloads.

We used iGetter to download files from several sites, including some Usenet feeds, and it handled all the file requests with ease. The graphic display of progress was handy and helped pass the short time for larger files. The segmented downloading worked well on larger files and servers that support such a feature. We had no issues with iGetter in our testing at all.
