It’s always a terrible feeling when you realize that you’re about to run out of room on your hard drive, and it’s even worse when you have no idea what’s taking up all that space. WinDirStat Portable is a lightweight program that lets users quickly identify the biggest space hogs on their machines and then take action to tidy things up.

The program’s interface is plain and utilitarian. When the program is launched, a dialog box asks users to select the drives or folders they want to analyze. The program then scans the selected locations and displays the results as a treemap, with rectangles of various sizes and colors representing the files on the drive. This visual representation is a great way to get an idea of what’s on your hard drive with just a quick glance. WinDirStat also displays a directory list and extension list, and both of these interact with each other and the treemap; click on a folder or file type in one view, and it will be highlighted in the others. WinDirStat lets users view folder properties, locate them in Windows explorer, and either move files to the Recycle Bin or delete them permanently. The built-in Help file is well-written and thorough, providing plenty of information about each of the program’s features. Overall, WinDirStat Portable is nothing fancy, but it’s a great way to get a quick overview of your computer’s contents, and its portability makes it a good choice for IT professionals who need to assess the contents of multiple machines.

Rufus Portable creates a bootable USB drive that can help you recover your system when very bad things happen to it. When your PC won’t start, the bootable disk you created in a rare moment of foresight will often let you boot into Safe Mode or System Recovery, where you can fix the problem and reboot normally. If the patient’s condition is more serious, you might even need a bootable disk to recover your OS, disk, or entire system from the full backup you also made (you did, right?). Years ago, bootable disks were floppies; then came CDs. Now optical drives are disappearing, too. But USB-attached storage devices holding gigabytes of data are everywhere. That’s where Rufus Portable comes in. It greatly eases the process of making a bootable disk, using a USB-attached storage device, including thumb drives and external HDDs. The portable version of Rufus comes from PortableApps, which takes exceptional open-source freeware and creates reliable portable versions.

Rufus Portable’s user interface is small and efficient in layout. It identified five system devices, including the USB thumb drive we chose for our bootable disk. Most Windows users will want the default partition scheme, MBR for BIOS or UEFI computers, but Rufus also supports MBR and GPT schemes for UEFI machines. The File System menu is your USB drive’s format, such as FAT (default) or FAT32 (our drive) though Rufus supports NTFS, UDF, and exFAT, too. Rufus offers custom Cluster Size and Format options, including the option to encode your disk in MS-DOS or FreeDOS or create an ISO image you can burn to disk. We created our disk and then successfully booted our system with it.

Be aware that Rufus reformats your USB drive, so be sure to back up and save any existing data before you hit “Start.” Rufus uses very little space, so you can use the rest of the drive normally. Just keep it handy when disaster strikes!

AbiWord Portable is a lightweight word-processing program that supplies many of the typical word-processing features in an easy-to-use format. It’s a great choice for users seeking an alternative to popular full-featured programs.

AbiWord Portable’s interface is clean and simple, with a layout that’s reminiscent of pre-2007 versions of Microsoft Word. The program’s features are organized with buttons and menus common to many other word-processing programs, allowing users who are already experienced with other programs to easily move into AbiWord Portable and start using it without wasting time looking for basic functions. The program’s built-in Help file is well-written and thorough. The most outstanding feature of AbiWord Portable is that it’s so lightweight and, as the name implies, can be stored on portable devices. Although the program provides the major features most users expect from word-processing programs, we noticed a few minor ways in which it was lacking. For example, although the program will underline misspelled words, there’s no autocorrect feature. We liked that AbiWord Portable offers mail merge and the capability to create tables. We also liked that it can save documents in a variety of different formats, making them accessible in other word-processing programs. Overall, we found AbiWord Portable to be both simple and powerful enough.

AbiWord Portable is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

Pidgin Portable is a fully portable version of Pidgin, the unified chat app formerly known as GAIM. It handles multiple instant messaging accounts in one simple interface, including not only the big names like AOL, Yahoo, MSN, and ICQ but also less common networks such as Jabber, SILC, XMPP, and MXit. Like the standard installed version, Pidgin Portable is freeware, but its portability means you can take your IM account settings and buddy lists with you on a USB drive. It handles many plug-ins, including encryption tools.

Since PortableApps converted Pidgin, we were confident that the portable version would download and run with no problems, and that proved to be the case. You can save the program to any directory, including USB drives and other remote or portable destinations, and run it with a click. We saved our download to a folder on our desktop. Pidgin Portable’s download includes a browser-based Help file. The documentation includes specific recommendations for the portable version, such as removing the USB drive when you’re finished with Pidgeon Portable if you’re running the program from such a device. Of course, the general recommendations apply, too–above all, “Stay Safe.”

Pidgin Portable automatically recognizes most chat programs, but we could also add 17 different accounts manually, and edit our settings from the Add Account dialog. We could also use the Add Account tool to configure a local alias and buddy icon to use in all accounts, and we could authorize new mail notifications. Advanced options include proxy settings, client log-in, and multiple simultaneous log-ins.

In all other ways, Pidgin Portable is just like the locally installed version in features and performance. We liked the installed version when we tested it, and we like the portable version just as much. In fact, if you already use Pidgin, you can easily copy your settings from the installed version to the portable version’s Data folder. If you regularly use chat programs at more than one PC, Pidgin Portable not only handles all the different IM tools but also lets you take your personal settings with you.

Pros

Clean installer: The program installs very quickly and doesn’t burden you with myriad options to check or a bunch of documentation to read during the install process.

Highly functional: This is a very powerful program in a stripped-down package. It consumes barely any system resources and yet provides you with all of the functions that you need.

Multi-document support: You can keep multiple documents open at one time, and they will display in a tabbed interface.

Cons

Strange menus: When you click on one of the items in the bar, the menu appears offset, rather than dropping down where you expect it to, under the item. This makes navigating through the menus confusing at first glance.

Bottom Line

If you find yourself switching back and forth between WordPad and Notepad or use both programs on a regular basis, you can make life easier by downloading Notepad++ Portable. The program is lean, clean, and effective.
