It’s so easy to take pictures and store them on your PC that you could quickly end up with the digital equivalent of the old shoebox stuffed with photos. You keep meaning to organize them into displays or albums, but it just never happens and eventually you aren’t even sure who some of the people are or why you took the photos. Thankfully, Picture Collage Maker Pro offers a simple way to help you organize your photos into customized albums, calendars, special occasion cards, and more.

As soon as Picture Collage Maker Pro is installed, you’re directed to a video tutorial on the publisher’s site that covers the basics of creating a collage. There are several other videos to show you how to make specific items like a calendar or card. The process is simple enough, but the guides will lessen the learning curve. The initial interface offers four easy-to-understand choices: one to create a collage from scratch and three that will give you help along the way, including Create From Template and Template Collage Wizard. If you’re new to the process, we suggest you start with a template and use the wizard. We started with a calendar template, which required us to simply choose the photos we wanted to include. Picture Collage Maker Pro does all the rest, inserting your selected photos into the template. You have the option to shuffle pictures and you can move the preset items easily with your mouse, but you can also opt to save the collages without making any changes. As you learn more about the program, you’ll find that it’s also easy to create your own items.

You don’t need any special design or digital image expertise to use Picture Collage Maker Pro. The trial version adds a watermark to your final product and you’re only allowed a 15-day trial period, but considering how easy it is to use the program that should be more than enough for you to see if this app is right for you.

The demand for applications that manipulate or arrange photos is relatively low on the Mac platform because Apple’s built-in photo software is so robust. However, CollageIt manages to find a niche for itself by offering a simple, straightforward tool to create collages from your existing photos. It takes only seconds to install and, once ready to use, CollageIt is immediately intuitive. Choose a format for your collage, drag and drop photos into the various slots on the collage, and save. You can either choose where each photo will be placed or hit the Random Layout or Shuffle buttons to mix it up. With minimal buttons and very clearly labeled Share on Facebook and Print buttons, it doesn’t get any easier to prepare your collage.

We were impressed with the uncluttered layout. A collage-making program doesn’t need dozens of buttons and PearlMountain understands that. Of course, simplicity comes at a cost. CollageIt is designed for one purpose, and if you have photos available it does it very well. Unfortunately, most Mac users store their photos in the iPhoto Library, which is not an option when selecting photos for your collage. Simply finding the photos needed to create a collage can present a challenge, but if you do have those photos, creating collage takes only seconds and you can share on Facebook, resize with ease, and export in one of six formats, including PDF and wallpaper. Very simple.

CollageIt is shareware; the lite version has some limitations on file size and commercial use. But don’t let that stop you because we found everything else intact. Overall, CollageIt is a tidy piece of software that does exactly as advertised, offering quick and easy collage creation on the Mac to supplement the many features of iPhoto. Poor integration with iPhoto presents problems, but if you have photos on a separate disc or export them from iPhoto, making a college is a snap and sharing them is even easier.

Picture Collage Maker offers users several options for using their photographs in creative ways. While offering much more than simple collages, this program’s cluttered interface will take some getting used to.

That interface is a patchwork of command icons and a puzzle of screens for templates, photos, and the main collage. Novice users will want to take a long, hard look at the Help file and more-experienced users will want to set aside several minutes to experiment and play with all the buttons before attempting anything serious. This is not a program one simply jumps into. Users are given a chance to choose from templates for collages, greeting cards, invitations, and calendars by surfing through the tightly compressed thumbnail menu on this program’s main screen. Users can also choose to create a collage from scratch. Once a template is chosen, users can input text, masks, frames, backgrounds, and photos by utilizing the simple icons. In addition, there is a catalog of clip art at your disposal. The results won’t replace a professional store-bought card, but will make interestingly personal works that are certain to be fun. The program’s features are fairly standard, offering to set the collage as the wallpaper, to preview the work, and to save as a JPEG.

While it has a cluttered organization, this program succeeds by offering a wealth of options. This program’s 15-day trial (with a watermark) is long enough to master all the different creations awaiting you.

Collages are a fun way to combine multiple images into one, and they have many potential uses, from greeting cards and scrapbooks to social networking profiles. CollageIt enables you to create good-looking collages without a lot of hassle.

The program’s interface can be a little confusing at first glance–there are multiple menus and sliders–but if you focus on the Getting Started pane in the middle, you’ll be fine. To create a collage, you simply select the images you want to use, adjust the settings, generate a preview, and save the collage when it’s done. The program automatically situates the images in the collage, so you don’t spend time on tedious layout tasks, but there are a few options for customizing the final result. You can adjust the collage’s spacing and margins, turn frames and shadows on and off, rotate images, and set particular colors or images as the background. You can also save layouts and reload them for later use. The program is quite easy to use, and we were creating attractive collages within a matter of minutes. CollageIt doesn’t have a Help file–there’s a very brief tutorial video on the publisher’s Web site, but that’s it–but this is not a huge drawback, as the program is pretty easy to figure out. Overall, we think this program is a great tool for quickly creating collages for art projects, presentations, and much more.

CollageIt installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.
