This diagnostic tool gives your computer a proper tune-up by testing your hard drive’s subsystems. We appreciate its thoroughness and its fully functional trial, but wished for a working Help file.

BurnInTest Standard’s easy-to-read user interface will appeal to even the most novice users. You’ll find intuitive command buttons, and a list of all of the subsystems to be scanned. A small screen pops up for each system and you can watch the detailed scan in progress. The whole scan process took about 15 minutes on average for our testers, but considering its thoroughness, that isn’t overly long. We were able to save a log of the results to our location of choice, and print them. The extensive Preferences menu allows you to go into each subsystem and run individual tests, and even set test cycle times.

The only problem we encountered with the program was a faulty Help option, which might scare away novice users. Still, even users with some experience should be able to pick up this app. And not only do you get an ample, 30-day trial period with BurnInTest Standard, it also allows you to try all of its features without restriction, which is a definite plus in our book.

This utility won’t install to your hard drive; it can only install on a bootable floppy disk. There is no interface, as it immediately checks your computer’s memory. Memtest86 is quick and accurate. However, system administrators looking for a memory tester will probably pass on Memtest86, as many current machines don’t include floppy drives.

Home users with older PCs will appreciate the simplicity of Memtest86. It can’t get any easier than inserting a disk and rebooting your PC. We can easily recommend this freeware for home users who have floppy drives and a need to check their computer’s memory.

Good interface: All features of the program are accessible through the clearly-presented main interface. The app walks you through the process of creating and writing the selected files step by step, including selecting drives, specifying whether you want to write or create an image, selecting the image, and then completing the writing process. There is also an output log where you can view completed transactions.

Perfect copies: ImageUSB creates exact copies of the selected files at the bit-level, ensuring that each copy is as detailed as the original, and all can be used interchangeably.

Cons

None, really: This program is fast and efficient, and while it doesn’t have a lot of fancy features, it does what it does very well.

Bottom Line

ImageUSB is a powerful and streamlined program that gives you all the tools you need to create identical copies of images on multiple USB drives. This program is free for personal use.
