Pros

Great wizard: After you download the program, a wizard launches that walks you through the step-by-step process of setting up a USB key that you can boot from to repair your machine. The wizard is very straightforward, and works perfectly.

Range of recovery tools: Rescue Kit has a variety of features to help you recover from different problems. You can correct the Master Boot Record if it has become corrupted; you can transfer files off the system if it is non-recoverable; or you can recover a partition if you’ve erased it in error.

Password reset: If you’ve forgotten an essential password and gotten locked out of your system, you can boot from your Rescue Kit USB key and reset your password.

Cons

Slow operation: Use of the recovery tool was very effective, but operations performed from the boot key were quite slow.

Bottom Line

Rescue Kit Free Edition is an excellent recovery tool. Download it when you have a healthy computer and create a boot key in order to have the resources you need to restore your computer after a system failure.

More importantly, it addresses one of the two biggest obstacles keeping many Windows users from backing up their systems: cost. We tried the 64-bit version; a 32-bit download is also available.

Pros

It’s free: Paragon’s free recovery tool has the essential capabilities of its premium backup solutions, but with fewer options.

It’s easy: The other obstacle to effective backups is usage: You can’t rescue your system from a backup that doesn’t exist. Too many users find backups confusing, but Paragon’s Virtual Disc Wizard walks you through each step.

Recovery drive: The Recovery Media Builder creates bootable USB drives or ISO files that can help you boot a sick PC and run a backup.

Cons

User Manual: Clicking User Manual tells you to go the product’s home page (no link) and download it yourself. A text Help file is included with the program files.

Go pro: Now that you’re considering backup software, take time to be sure you don’t need more than Paragon Backup & Recovery Free has to offer. Premium backup tools (like Paragon Backup & Recovery Home) cost much less than pro service or, worse, a new computer.

Bottom Line

No more excuses: Paragon Backup & Recovery 14 Free can back up and restore your Windows PC when things go drastically wrong — but only if you run it before you need it! That’s the other obstacle, and only you can address it.

Paragon Partition Manager 2014 Free aims to make it easy to create, resize, reformat, and delete hard disk partitions, but its wizard-based processes compromise flexibility. Advanced users may need more control than this software’s algorithms permit.

Pros

Mostly automated: Paragon Partition Manager scans your disks to identify existing partitions and available free space. All you have to do is check some basic options and let the software do the rest.

Mac and back: A built-in NTSF/HFS+ Conversion Wizard can make your Windows disks accessible to your Mac and your Mac disks accessible in Windows.

It’s free: Users have comparatively few choices in freeware disk partitioning tools, so Paragon’s entry is certainly welcome.

Cons

Complicated documentation: We’re not sure which is more complex; the software’s algorithms or the documentation explaining them.

Too little control: The software looks for the first disk to create a partition, then the next, and so on. The only available partition space it found was on our C drive (which we did not want to change) not our 320GB D drive or the 650GB external drive with 93GB of free space we wanted to partition.

Chaos potential: Inexperienced users who want to create a separate partition for their music files (for example) on their C drive might accidentally wipe the wrong partition (Paragon recommends backups; we strongly agree).

Bottom Line

Partitioning and managing disk drives requires care and attention to detail, and experienced users will probably want more flexibility and control than Paragon Partition Manager 2014 Free offers. But for basic or infrequent operations, it’ll do fine.

Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite 14 can back up, restore, copy, and partition hard drives; migrate your OS to a new disk; securely wipe data; transfer files; and more. It’s a premium suite that you can try for free for 30 days.

Pros

Windows 8: Paragon’s tools are fully compatible with Windows 8, and its tile-based quick launch interface looks at home in Windows 8 systems.

Backups: The Smart Backup Wizard backs up disks or partitions, email, media files, documents, or any files or folders; plus you don’t have to buy a separate backup utility.

Virtual machinery: Paragon let us virtualize our system or start our OS after an unsuccessful migration using a third-party program. It supports major VMs including Oracle and VMWare.

Not forgotten: Most users don’t need to install the optional HotCore Driver for Windows 2000. But if you’re still running Windows 2000 or XP, the publishers have you covered.

Cons

Manual labor: Despite a tile for the User Manual, the all-but-empty Help file instructed us to download the manual via a link we couldn’t access. For a premium tool, it’s disappointing. For a powerful disk utility, it’s potentially disastrous.

Free gets closer: Freeware disk utilities are gaining ground in features and performance, though the premium packages like Paragon still hold an edge, especially in support.

Bottom Line

Disk management utilities and backup utilities are two types of software we’ve never minded paying for since they’re critical. Paragon Disk Manager Suite 14 combines both (and more) in one toolkit, but the User Manual and Help file issue needs to be addressed. That aside; we’d certainly trust Paragon Disk Manager Suite 14 with our disks and data.
