Coda from Panic Software offers a sleek, trimmed-down alternative to expensive Web design suites. This one-window Web design app combines all the tools you need to build a site, with an emphasis on creating a fast, easy, integrated workflow.

Coda’s collaboration tools let you seamlessly work together with others, and a built-in FTP sidebar–using the power of Panic’s powered-up Transmit 4–helps you get your site updated quickly. Hand-coding experts will like the full-featured CSS and text editors (although no code folding here), and editing multiple files side by side in split panes is a breeze. Coda also has tons of time-saving features, including Clips (for frequently used code snippets), an Open Quickly window (for fast access to specific files), and integrated subversion. We particularly like the powerful Find and Replace tools, which let you drag-and-drop global changes to your code.

Coda is neither perfect nor cheap (and we’re getting antsy for Coda 2.0), but if you’re searching for a reasonably priced Web design tool on the Mac, Coda is a solid choice.

Unison 2 is a major update for this popular Usenet client, providing a much more modern interface to access one of the oldest and most arcane corners of the Internet.

Fans of Usenet typically come in search of discussion groups and binary downloads, and Unison’s all-new, iTunes-style interface makes navigation easy, with a friendly directory system, threaded messages, and an immensely useful search bar. And given that downloads are a priority for so many Usenet users, Unison also has some thoughtful integrated features, like audio preview, automatic unarchiving (with unRAR and unPAR), and automatic skipping of unneeded files. Unison hasn’t gotten everything perfect yet (which is perhaps inevitable when venturing into the secret caves of Usenet). For example, you still can’t toggle binaries as read. But some problems, such as the inability to import preferences, have been rectified quickly in early updates.

Many Usenet users may be happy staying with their current clients, but if you’re new to Usenet or looking for a more elegant way to get around, Unison is a breath of fresh air. The seven-day trial version also offers a 24-hour trial of Unison Access, if you don’t already have Usenet access through your ISP.

Transmit for Mac is a full service FTP client for the OS X platform. Transmit looks great, is easy to use, and should be a welcome program for anyone who has had difficulties transferring files via FTP in the past. It also has some welcome features that help integrate it smoothly with your system as a whole.

Pros

Favorites syncing: Being able to sync your favorites smoothly via a number of different methods is a very welcome feature. With Transmit, you have the option of syncing your favorites via Dropbox, which is an excellent choice for people who use multiple platforms but want to keep their favorites synced. If you’re an iCloud user, you can also sync your favorites via iCloud.

Good visual interface: The interface in Transmit is great looking, and very easy to understand. It is divided into two panels, one of which represents your local system, the other which represents the system you’re connecting to. This is easy to use and understand for veterans of this type of program and first-time users alike.

OS X integration: Transmit integrates with OS X, so you can mount external servers that you’ve connected to like disks in the Finder menu.

Cons

Cost compared to competition: There are several competitor programs, which do essentially the exact same things, but for free.

Bottom Line

If you’re looking for an FTP app that integrates smoothly with a Mac operating system, then Transmit is a very good option. Finder and iCloud integration make it work very smoothly within the Mac ecosystem. The only real drawback is that there are competitor products that transfer files over FTP very well, but for no money.

CandyBar allows users to customize almost any icon or folder on their Mac from a single interface, and while the setup can be a bit confusing, the range and utility of the tools here are fantastic. Whether you want to change the default folders on your Mac or swap around some of the icons being used in the dock of your machine, this app will give you unprecedented control over how your desktop looks and feels.

Installation of CandyBar is fast and the app will load independently each time, requiring you to create a shortcut for your desktop or your dock. The interface offers numerous options, as well, and none are clearly labeled so it will take a bit of time to determine how best to organize and lay out the features you have. Once you do, however, the interface is very intuitive, providing everything you need to drag and drop icons into the well, change them, and save them to the system settings in just a few, quick clicks. With preloaded icons to choose from, easy-to-use updating tools to find more, and a swap in and out process that takes only seconds (with a very useful restore tool if you ever want to go back to the way things were), this is a powerful icon-customization app.

If you are tired of the same old Apple look on your desktop or laptop, consider checking out CandyBar. The app comes as a free trial with a $29 upgrade fee after the trial period expires. You can test all of the features in that time, however, and customize quite a bit of how your machine looks, making it well worth the download and test.
