For those who are not able to use the dashboard or any of its widgets due to the extra steps involved to access them, DesktopWidgets for Mac provides a quick way to use those from the main computer screen. While there are a number of steps required to set up widgets, once activated they add functionality to most Macs without any glitches.

The program’s first window after installing quickly gives the user the option to open the program, itself, or view an HTML instruction. The instructions are helpful since there is little to the program’s operation. A drop-down menu is the only actual interface for the program, and this acts as a gateway to allow dashboard widgets to be operated from the desktop. Users can open a Finder window to select widgets through this drop-down, or through a number of keyboard shortcuts, which are basic and intuitive. It may require additional research to locate folders where dashboard widgets are stored, but this does not add much to the time of operation for DesktopWidgets for Mac. Once selected, dashboard widgets open up directly on the desktop, as advertised. The window size is similar to that in the dashboard, itself, making them easy to click and drag around the screen to rearrange as desired. We tested this app on Mac OS X Mountain Lion and no problems were detected.

DesktopWidgets for Mac performs well and adds more fun to any desktop. Whether you need widgets for different apps, latest news, games, or anything else, this application would be a suitable solution for anyone who wants to operate dashboard widgets more quickly and conveniently.

Office Clock for Mac offers nothing more than a basic clock for your Mac dashboard. The widget installs easily and shows time as intended, but lacks any real customization options and settings.

Office Clock for Mac installs directly onto your Dashboard. The widget features a classic office clock-style with hour, minute, and second hands displaying the time. Apart from showing the current time, this widget offers nothing more to add to its usefulness. We were especially disappointed when we clicked on the information icon, expecting to see options or settings, but instead found keyword-based links to other apps available on the developer’s Web site. Icons that were beneath these links also linked to specific download sections on the developer’s Web site. The only icon that actually performed the assigned task was the X icon, which simply closed this interface and returned us to the clock. All this widget seems to offer, apart from showing the correct time, are non-intrusive advertisements for other apps.

If you’re looking for a basic office-style clock for your dashboard, then Office Clock for Mac might be a good download. However, don’t expect to see any options for customization or even the most basic of settings.

Earth for Mac lets you open a spinning picture of the Earth created from satellite images in real time right on your dashboard. Anytime you need a little perspective on life, just take a look at the beautiful world we live in spinning around, and lose yourself in the wonder of it all.

This app doesn’t really have any features to speak of except the ability to open one or more images of the Earth. You can move these images around on your dashboard, and they spin slowly as the earth rotates, so you can get a look at all parts of the globe. The images aren’t big enough for you to really get a good look at anything in detail, but it is fun to take a look back once in a while to see how the cloud patterns have changed and marvel at the vibrant colors of our Earth with Earth for Mac.
