Solitaire is a popular game, and over the years many variations have sprung up. Klondike is perhaps the most popular version, the one that people tend to learn from grandparents, parents, or the small suite of games that comes with Windows. Despite its simplicity and ubiquity, Klondike Solitaire remains an entertaining card game, and this basic rendition is quite playable, but not particularly impressive.

The program’s interface is plain but attractive, with the cards displayed on a patterned green background. Unlike other versions of solitaire, this program doesn’t allow for any customization of the game’s appearance; users can’t choose from multiple decks of cards or change the background color. In fact, although the graphics are decent and the game is playable, the program lacks many features that are common to even basic versions of solitaire. There is no draw-one option, only draw-three. There is only one style of scoring. Users can’t even double-click on cards to send them to the foundation piles; each card must be dragged and dropped. This version of Klondike Solitaire isn’t bad in a pinch, but even the version of the game that comes with Windows has more features. In fact, the only thing about this game that is the least bit customizable is the music; a cool jazz track can be turned on and off. The program doesn’t have a Help file per se, but it does include brief instructions for playing solitaire.

Klondike Solitaire is free, but it contains advertisements for other games. The program installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users seeking an extremely basic version of solitaire.

Bouncing Balls is a basic game in which users eliminate groups of balls by shooting balls of the same color at them. It’s a fun game, although we’ve seen similar games that are a little more interesting.

The program’s interface is basic. A wall of different colored balls moves toward the bottom of the screen, while a shooter provides users with a supply of balls to fire at it. Shoot a red ball at a group of two or more red balls, for example, and they fall, taking with them any balls that are attached. The object of the game is to get rid of all the balls before the wall reaches the bottom of the screen. As players advance through the game, the wall moves faster, the balls get smaller, and different ball colors are added. There’s no Help file, but game play is intuitive, and the publisher’s Web site offers tips. The game is fun, but it could be better. The sound effects quickly became tedious and annoying, and we were glad to be able to turn them off. We wish the program had a full-screen mode, or even the option to maximize the window, as we sometimes moused outside the window when aiming the shooter and then inadvertently minimized the game. Other than that, the game is enjoyable, but it didn’t knock our socks off.

Bouncing Balls is free. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

Spot the Difference provides a challenging game for both kids and adults. This fun game demands that players pay attention and seek out differences between two pictures to beat the clock.

We like how easy the interface is to operate, though the lack of a real Help file is a letdown. We were personally never confused enough by Spot the Difference to need extra instructions, but it was still disappointing to find that the Help file is basically an advertisement for other products. The game itself functions well, and the play offers a nice challenge. We were in a race against the clock to compare two similar pictures and click on 10 differences. The pictures were an assortment of smiley faces, and we felt a lot of tension knowing the faster we guessed, the higher our score would be. We thought this was a good game for adults or even kids with a keen eye for detail. The program was fairly sparse when it comes to extras, but it does contain one handy feature: The Hint button. It showed us one match we missed, to help speed along the process. This game was simple and challenging, and we felt it offered a fine distraction for young and old alike.

Spot the Difference is freeware. Its mix of a simple layout and challenging gameplay made it a program that we recommend.
