Norton Security Premium is Symantec’s antimalware suite for Windows, Mac, and Android. The app uses a combination of detection methods, including virus signatures, cloud-based analysis, and now machine learning as well.

Pros

Broad-spectrum protection: Norton Security Premium offers multiple lines of defense. The traditional method of antivirus scanning has been to use virus definition files, like a mugshot catalog for malware. But malware has become sophisticated enough to change its appearance beyond recognition. The next step has been behavioral scanning, identifying malware through its behaviors, either triggered by the scanner in a sandbox (a virtual container that tricks the malware into running in an environment where it can be safely examined) or triggered by you when you open a malicious file or Web link.

Norton’s new move goes beyond the sandbox. The company’s Predictive Machine Learning (PML) includes a supercomputer that’s been fed tens of millions of files, creating a body of knowledge that the supercomputer developed faster than the computer scientists who created it, according to Norton. Instead of identifying malware by its resemblance to a mugshot, this new type of detection looks at how a file is put together to determine whether the file should even have a mugshot.

In theory, PML can defend against zero-day security flaws, which are when malware is active before a developer has had any days to patch its exploited software. Sometimes it takes software publishers weeks or months to fix vulnerabilities. Combined with Norton Insights and its constantly updated database of virus signatures, Norton gives you have a multipronged set of antimalware tools.

Descriptive settings: In the Settings section of Norton Security Premium, almost every setting has a box with a question mark that you can click to see a description in detailed, plain English. We’d prefer having this documentation available offline or in a downloadable file, but it’s still a big improvement over antimalware apps that use a lot of catchy but vague buzzwords.

Cons

Browser toolbar has some issues: Norton obviously recognizes the pitfalls of clicking a malicious link. The toolbar provides a vetted search engine (the search results are filtered so that they don’t point to sketchy websites), and the add-on puts a seal of approval on search results when you use Google. However, in our testing, the toolbar made Chrome lock up a few times and didn’t do a great job of visually integrating into Chrome’s interface. It might be better if the toolbar popped up only when you clicked Chrome’s address bar or moved your mouse pointer up to that part of the screen.

Bottom Line

While the toolbar has some rough edges, Norton has built a respectable antimalware platform for Norton Security Premium. The introduction of predictive machine learning gives the competition a challenge to catch up with.

Even the best-protected computer can contract a virus, but it goes without saying that an unprotected computer is far more vulnerable. Many users only see the light after spending long hours in the dark, trying to cure an infected PC. Many tools can remove viruses and other malware from your PC, but it’s not uncommon for one or two bugs to resist eradication. Reboot, and they’re back. Symantec’s Norton Power Eraser is a free tool that targets stubborn files and forcibly removes them. Because it cleans aggressively, it can delete critical system files, so it must be used with care; expert guidance is recommended.

Norton Power Eraser has a super-simple interface featuring three large buttons: Scan, History, and Settings. The Settings include an optional Rootkit scan, Multi-Boot Check, and Log Settings; History accessed the Log to review previous jobs. Experts will find this information critical to diagnosing what went wrong. We started a scan, including the Rootkit scan, so Norton Power Eraser rebooted our system, and then scanned it. It found two suspicious items, startup items left over from uninstalled apps. One was flagged as Bad. It wasn’t a major threat, but there was no reason not to remove it, so out it went, and the other item, too. Norton Power Eraser recommends letting it create a System Restore Point before cleaning your system: we agree. When all was ready, we pressed Fix. Removing the startup items required another reboot. When our system restarted, Norton Power Eraser reported the job’s results in the Log.

Many computer viruses can be removed without doing lasting harm to your system. We recommend trying some less aggressive tools before turning to Norton Power Eraser, though experienced users will find it can launch precision strikes against clear targets. But chances are good that you’ve already exhausted every other remedy by the time you turn to Norton Power Eraser, and you may be less worried about collateral damage. Don’t let frustration make you reckless: pay attention, check stuff out, go slow, and double-check. You’ll be fine, assuming your problem is one Norton Power Eraser can rub out.

Pros

Nice interface: Norton Security 2015 features a clear interface with buttons across the bottom of the screen that let you navigate quickly through the different sections. These include Security Status, Scan, Live Update, Advanced, and Add Devices. You can also make adjustments to one section while a scan is running.

Scanning options: Basic scanning options include Quick, Full, File, and Facebook Wall. In addition, you can turn Automatic Scans on and off, or schedule scans to occur at a specific time or interval. There is also a Browser Protection feature available for Safari and Firefox that will scan as you browse to ensure no hidden threats find their way onto your machine.

Cons

Scan status: When a scan is in progress, the readout will show you that it’s working, how many files have been scanned so far, and how many issues have been encountered. But there is no readout to tell you how many files still need to be scanned or how long the scan is expected to take.

Bottom Line

Norton Security 2015 for Mac is a convenient and effective way of keeping your computer safe from viruses and other types of malware. The well-designed software offers a nice set of scanning options, so you can take advantage of the features most relevant to your situation.

The suite supports up to 5 devices, but you can upgrade to Norton Security with Backup to cover 10 devices and get 25GB of online storage.

Pros

Modern UI update: Norton Security has an elegant user interface that works with keyboard and mouse or Windows 8 touch controls. Symantec wisely decided to keep the color scheme simple. Tab menus are easy to navigate and expand to offer more advanced options in each main category: Security, Identity, and Performance. Useful help links sit next to each command in case you want to learn more.

Speedier scans: Norton Security scans are some of the fastest we’ve seen this year, an improvement over last year’s Norton 360. Quick scans take less than a few minutes, and a full sweep took slightly over 15 in our tests. The options to set post-scan behaviors, like PC shutdown and hibernate, are most welcome for those who want to update and go. The thorough antivirus engine swept up all the standard malware and adware. This finding is consistent with previous AV-Test lab results, demonstrating the suite’s above-average performance.

First-day alerts and smaller footprint: Norton Security addresses the issue of first-day exploits with a cloud-based approach. By comparing scan results to real-time definition updates, Norton can warn you about potentially malicious files making their way around the Web. Also, the cloud-based scans mean Norton Security has been able to shrink the size of the local definition to a fraction of what it used to be. The antivirus still keeps a small local definition to watch out for prevalent troublemakers, in case you want to perform offline scans.

Beyond security: Norton Identity Safe, a password manager that secures your personal information, is vastly improved. Sign in to different websites and applications or make online payments without putting your identity at risk. The service works pretty flawlessly after the initial setup.

Cons

Fewer subscription choices: This year’s consolidation of suites has reduced Norton’s pricing flexibility. To get the most for your money, Norton Security with Backup is the obvious choice: for $10 more than Norton Security, you get double the device coverage, plus cloud storage. But without a lower-tier price option, Norton risks alienating its limited-use customers who are interested in protecting only a handful of devices. There is a 30-day trial of the new Norton if you wish to check out whether a complete security suite is right for you.

Uninformative tutorial: The tutorial could be better presented. Help pages and product manuals are available, but they can be overwhelming to the average user, making advanced tasks — like configuring Norton Firewall — challenging.

Bottom Line

Norton Security unites Symantec’s services in one improved product. You no longer have to choose between Internet protection and an antivirus suite. Norton Security comes packed with tools, which can be overwhelming at first glance, and the startup tutorial doesn’t do a great job of explaining the suite’s capabilities. However, these powerful features more than justify the price — which is good, because consolidation of the Symantec’s products means fewer pricing options. Overall, Norton demonstrates why it’s a household name with improvements to its award-winning antivirus engine, which can scan faster, alert you to release-day vulnerabilities, and more.
