DesktopOK is a basic, compact program that lets you save and restore the positions of your desktop icons. It’s nothing fancy, but if you frequently end up with a desktop full of scrambled icons, this program could make your life just a little bit easier.

The program’s interface is basic, and although it’s fairly easy to figure out by virtue of its lack of features, some tool tips for the buttons would have been nice, especially the “Punch the Icons” button, which rearranges all of the icons on the desktop, as we learned the hard way. Fortunately, we’d already used DesktopOK to save our icon layout and were able to restore it easily, but we’d have been pretty irritated if we’d clicked the Punch the Icons button first. Using DesktopOK is fairly straightforward: simply click the Save button to save the current arrangement of icons and Restore to fix them after they’ve become disorganized. You can save multiple icon arrangements and name them for reference. The program comes with a brief HTML Help file that opens in Internet Explorer, which is mildly annoying. Overall, DesktopOK certainly isn’t sophisticated, but it is an easy-to-use tool for tidying up your desktop icons after they’ve gotten out of place. We like that it’s small and portable, making it easy to keep handy on a thumb drive.

Q-Dir gives you the ability to view the properties of up to four files all at once for side-by-side comparisons. We were unimpressed by its tiny, unintuitive command buttons but, overall, it did its job well.

The user interface opens as four panels, each with the same commands, and each with the ability to browse for a specific file. At the top of the window reside tiny, almost microscopic buttons that let you choose your view. We had to hover our mouse over each one to learn its function. Still, we were able to quickly search for, and pull up, specific files and folders. Each window contains commands to run, delete, copy, and paste files. In terms of extras, we especially liked the zoom feature that offers a magnifier for the visually impaired. It does offer a hot-key combo so you don’t have to worry about searching through the tiny command buttons to activate it.

The Help feature is pretty brief, and merely includes hot-key combinations and brief descriptions of some of the features. However, if you’re looking for a free program that lets you view and manage multiple files at once, we recommend Q-Dir as a capable program despite its design flaws.

Quick TextPaste allows pasting pre-defined text and running programs and commands via assigned keyboard shortcuts. Although this program is fast, easy to install, and has a small footprint, there is no discernible user help to learn how to use this program apart from a short information file.

Quick TextPaste downloads as a portable application with no need for installation. The program’s interface is quite plain and might seem rather confusing for novice users. Main links are located on the upper menu, and under the Preferences pane there are three buttons for deleting, copying, and editing text and its assigned shortcut. These buttons are not as intuitive as one would expect and the Edit button doesn’t seem to allow for any edits except for text. However, you can add text, assign a shortcut, add its menu text, as well as edit everything from the Add text pane. When adding text, you are limited to 4,000 characters. The program does not give the option of defining your own shortcuts. A drop-down list gives you set options, but you cannot choose anything that is not on the list to make a combination for your shortcut. By default, the application minimizes to tray if closed but you can change this via the Options button.

Even though Quick TextPaste seems to be geared to more advanced users, it can also come in handy for regular users who need a way to quickly copy/paste text or run certain programs. The program could benefit from additional and clearer instructions and a more intuitive user interface, though, to be more useful to the less experienced user.

If you like to use fun or attractive images as your desktop wallpaper but hate the way they look when they’re cluttered with desktop icons, try AutoHideDesktopIcons. This simple utility easily displays your desktop icons when needed and keeps them hidden the rest of the time.

AutoHideDesktopIcons minimizes to the system tray when not in use, and clicking its icon brings up a simple interface with a series of check boxes and radio buttons. Users can specify whether they want the program to start with Windows, always start minimized, always be on top, or to hide the taskbar; this is also where you can easily disable AutoHideDesktopIcons if needed.

You can also specify whether you want to use the left, middle, or right mouse button to display the desktop icons. A timer lets users set a length of time between 3 and 100 seconds to display the desktop icons before hiding them again. We configured the program as we wanted and our desktop icons disappeared; clicking on the desktop, as we’d specified, displayed the icons for 30 seconds before they disappeared again.

AutoHideDesktopIcons doesn’t have any documentation or other features, but for what it is, it works just fine. We think it’s a great choice if you prefer the look of an uncluttered desktop but still want easy access to your favorite files and programs.

Q-Dir (64-bit) from Nenad Hrg is a freeware file manager with some interesting twists. Like other file management utilities, it displays your disk drives, files, folders, and other system information, making it easy to delete, copy, export, rename, and move files and folders. Q-Dir also offers optional context-menu integration and portable operation, but what really sets it apart from other file management tools is its highly flexible interface with “amazing Quadro-View technology.” That sounds like something you’d find at the 1951 Motorama, not a 2011 file management utility, but it’s actually a useful four-screen interface with variations. This setup lets you view multiple disks or directories simultaneously in one interface, ending desktop clutter and window-juggling. It also simplifies dragging and dropping and other file maintenance.

Q-Dir’s default view is the four-pane 4-Dir Quadro-View window, which duplicates all window features and the same basic tree view in each pane. At the end of the program’s main menu bar is a series of icons for toggling between its 12 different display configurations, such as 3-Dir (three windows), 2-Dir, horizontal, vertical, and so on, with an optional left-hand navigation panel and system tree view. With four drives on two physical hard disks in our system, Q-Dir’s 4-Dir view was perfect for a one-look overview. Once we’d chosen our view, we could set it as the program’s default. Each separate window offers a complete Explorer-style interface, so browsing to various folders and files had a familiar feel. Best of all, the clearly separated yet unified view ended the tedious business of resizing and dragging around various open windows or, worse, trying to use the navigation arrows to move between two or more directories. Q-Dir has some useful extras, too, such as a Magnifier tool, and many options relating to how it opens, runs, looks, and performs.

The 64-bit edition Q-Dir is one of the most flexible Windows file managers we’ve tried, with too many options to describe. There’s a Help file if you need it, though its English language version seems to have been the product (or victim) of machine translation, with the occasional smile-provoking phrase. However, nothing about either the program or its documentation was unclear or confusing, and we recommend Q-Dir without reservation.

Some fonts are better suited for certain projects than others, but it’s not always easy to preview and compare fonts to make the best decision. FontViewOK is a lightweight font viewer that lets you do exactly that. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s a great way to easily see what fonts look like in a variety of styles.

The program’s interface is plain, consisting mostly of just a list of fonts. You can enter custom text with which to preview the fonts, and can also see what the fonts look like bolded, italicized, struck-through, and underlined, as well as in different sizes and colors. To compare fonts, you can split the screen and display side-by-side lists, making it easy to analyze the differences between fonts or find fonts that go well together. We liked that the program has the ability to print font lists, as well as a print preview feature. The only real drawback we found to FontViewOK was its lack of Help file, but this isn’t a serious issue, as everything about the program is pretty intuitive. We also wished that the font list was searchable, instead of depending solely on a drop-down menu, but this is a relatively minor complaint. Overall, FontViewOK doesn’t have as many features as some of the other font managers we’ve seen, but it’s a nice, lightweight way to view and compare fonts.

Cursors are necessary and useful, but every now and then they can get in the way. You might find them blocking the text you’re typing in a word-processing document, hovering over the forehead of someone in a video you’re watching, or presenting a distraction during a slideshow. This is a problem that can be easily solved with AutoHideMouseCursor. This simple utility can automatically hide your cursor after a specified period of time, keeping it out of the way until you need it again.

The program’s interface is straightforward; there are check boxes to disable the program, have it start with Windows, and keep it on top. A slider lets users adjust the period of time that AutoHideMouseCursor waits before hiding the mouse, ranging from 2 to 100 seconds. Time starts counting down once the mouse stops moving, and a timer shows a receding progress bar as the seconds pass; moving the mouse starts the timer over again. The program can be minimized to the system tray for easy access. We liked that the cursor automatically reappears once the mouse is moved; there are no keyboard shortcuts or other tricks to remember. There’s no Help file, but most people shouldn’t have much trouble figuring it out. Overall, AutoHideMouseCursor is a very simple program, but it proved to be very useful at those times when the cursor gets in the way.

Nenad Hrg’s 12-Ants is a cute yet slightly creepy desktop enhancement that unleashes an army of digital ants across the user’s screen. Although there’s not much point to it beyond its potential as a practical joke, it is somewhat amusing and entertaining.

The ants themselves are not particularly detailed or realistic-looking, but at first glance they definitely fool that part of your brain that identifies insects. The program’s interface consists of a small dialog box in which users can set their preferences for the ants’ behavior. You can adjust the number of ants from three to 50, as well as modify their speed and transparency. You can even customize the ants’ behavior, such as directing them to attack the cursor, flee from the cursor, or simply stroll around the screen. There’s no Help file, but the features are fairly self explanatory. It seems to be best for a quick laugh or practical joke and doesn’t really have much potential for long-term entertainment; more than likely you’ll open it, play with it for a few minutes, and be done with it, but it’s not bad for what it is. We do think that, depending on where you work, loading it on a colleague’s computer while he or she is out to lunch could significantly liven up your workday, but don’t blame us if you get in trouble.

If changing your computer screen’s resolution hides or cuts off some of your desktop icons, you can adjust your display settings, or you can download DesktopOK (64-bit). It’s a compact piece of freeware that saves and restores desktop icon positions for different screen resolutions or different users. It lets users who share a PC instantly restore personal settings or individual users save multiple settings. You can use DesktopOK to create profiles for certain functions, such as work, Web surfing, or gaming. Best of all, you won’t lose desktop access to your programs when you need to change your screen’s resolution.

DesktopOK’s compact interface opened in German, but we instantly changed it to English by clicking the English language icon (a British flag) from a drop-down list offering more than a dozen choices plus a translate button. This tool’s interface is simple, just file menus and a main field displaying saved settings. The main functions are Save, Restore, and Delete, with the ability to create names for saved profiles. We saved our current settings, returned to the desktop, rearranged some icons, and clicked Restore. DesktopOK instantly restored our arrangement. Next we tried different screen resolutions, with the same results. DesktopOK’s settings includes quick access to some Windows features, such as tile and cascade display options, as well as selections for saving settings on exit, starting with Windows, and other program properties. There’s also a function called Punch the Icons, which randomly distributes icons across the desktop. This feature could have potential as a training tool to familiarize users with icons without memorizing their positions. Of course, clicking our saved settings instantly restored order to our desktop.

DesktopOK (64-bit) is for 64-bit editions of Windows. It’s portable freeware that runs when you click the extracted program file, with no installation required, so you can carry it on a keychain USB drive or other portable media and run it on any PC you need to use without leaving Registry changes or program traces. If you like to use the same desktop setup at work and home, run duplicate desktops on multiple monitors, play video from your PC on your TV, or use software that requires you to change your screen resolution often, DesktopOK could be for you.
