There is also a Blank Diagram option that you can use if you want to start completely from scratch, and all of the templates allow you to move and add bubbles at will.

Accessible tools: This program’s interface is laid out in such a way that all of the tools you need to complete your diagram are quickly accessible. The diagram displays in the main window, and the tools are arranged along the top and the left-hand side of the screen.

Cons

Template overload: The templates do come with a lot of bubbles and connections in place. While you can move and delete bubbles at will, it still may be a lot of work in certain circumstances. But you can always start with a completely blank page, too.

MEO Free File Encryption for Mac allows users to password-protect files and send encrypted e-mails, all in a basic, easy-to-understand package. With the rise in security threats, the program’s capabilities will be useful to many users who want to protect sensitive files against unauthorized access.

MEO Free File Encryption for Mac opens into a small menu with three large buttons. Each includes clear labeling and graphics, making their functions easy to identify, even for less-experienced users. These buttons are for encrypting, decrypting, and e-mailing secured files. Clicking the encrypt option brings up an additional window, which allows users to import files, or entire folders. Locating specific files is accomplished just as it is when using the Mac’s Finder. The program then moves to a menu where selections for the output location and encryption algorithm are made. The two algorithm choices: Blowfish and Des, are not explained, but both worked equally well in our tests. Users can then enter a password to allow access, thereby completing the encryption process. The decryption button allows users to select previous encoded documents for use. A Preferences menu allows changes to the default encryption, as well as the e-mail used for sending secure files. It’s a small touch, but we liked the ability to send a test e-mail to make sure everything is working as intended. The file encryption worked well during testing, and the decrypted files returned exactly as the original.

MEO Free File Encryption for Mac performs all of the basic encryption functions well and will be useful to users who need to secure sensitive files, folders, and e-mails, quickly and easily.

Inventoria is the inventory and stock management component of NCH Software’s integrated business suite, though it also works quite well as a standalone inventory and bar code tool. It can track and manage inventoried items for multiple businesses by location, vendor, and other categories. It can generate reports, issue low stock level alerts, order new stock, track purchases and sales, manage customer and supplier contacts, post inventory lists online, compute taxes, sends faxes, and more.

When we installed Inventoria, we were prompted for our business name and other details, but you can skip that step and enter the data later. The program’s interface is easy to navigate, with most tasks and functions listed in a left-hand guide panel. We like the ability to customize the toolbar and the file menu bar, especially the quick and easy method of adding our own specific entries to the Categories, Locations, Suppliers, and Customer menus, giving instant access to our most important data. Clicking Web Access let us set up and access a free, password-protected online account for posting inventory data others can access, such as in-stock items or quarterly sales. Inventoria’s pop-up dialogs and ample Help menu simplified the process of taking inventory, though of course you first must enter each item. Inventoria supports bar code scanners, which can greatly reduce the time involved in not only entering your stock but also tracking it.

We’ve tested many inventory management tools ranging in complexity from Not Very to Why Didn’t I Hire Someone To Do This? Inventoria is definitely more Mom-and-Pop than CPA-on-a-CPU, yet it seems to lack nothing it needs to do its job.

MixPad Audio Mixer from NCH Software is a digital multitrack mixing suite that is easy to use yet capable of producing professional-quality mixes. It can mix and process more than 100 tracks at once in most audio formats, and it can also extract audio from video files as well as rip CDs. It works as a standalone app but integrates seamlessly with NCH’s other media production and editing tools via the Toolbox utility.

Media-player-like buttons and time indicators give MixPad’s interface a familiar feel. The main window displays each track horizontally, each with its own control console. The setup options basically involve selecting a recording device and output folder, while the Audio options included sample rate and other specifications. Selecting the optional Clip Manager on the View menu opened a right-hand panel displaying open clips. Since each track can hold multiple clips, and MixPad can manage dozens of tracks, this is a handy feature, and you can toggle it closed when you don’t need it. We clicked Load Clip, browsed to a selection of tunes ripped from a CD, and loaded two, one clip each in the first two of the five default tracks. MixPad quickly scanned each clip and displayed its audio spectrum and title in the selected track and its data in the Clip Manager. Clicking the Play button started both clips playing at once, though we could also start either clip playing at a specific time. The extensive zoom and expand controls let us view entire audio clips or individual passages in tiny fractions, while the Pan slider shifted the sound of the particular track from the right channel to the left. Pressing the Fx button called up a dialog that we could use to string together a chain of effects to apply in sequence. We were also able to change tracks’ playback speed to synchronize pitch. With just some brief and aimless fiddling, we were able to turn a sonic mish-mash into an improvised mash-up that didn’t sound half bad. With some effort and direction, a Top 40 hit would surely emerge.

MixPad replaces the table-sized mixing panels and multitrack recorders that only pro studios could afford not so long ago. But MixPad does more than make it easy to mix and record high-quality audio productions, though; it makes it fun, too.
