This Flash-based puzzle game offers a daunting challenge, although we wished it also offered user-customization options. In Allout, you must simply turn out all the lights on the gameboard by clicking them with your mouse. However, disabling one light will often make others come on, so you must use strategy to be successful. While we easily blew through the first few puzzles, the game made us sweat from the fifth board on. The cartoon-style graphics are decent enough to get the point across, and you can resize the game to full-screen mode for a better view. Allout’s biggest disadvantage is it doesn’t offer any features, such as the ability to play against a friend or disable the sound effects. We also didn’t appreciate that the game installed several unwanted shortcuts on our desktop. Still, since it provides a large number of puzzles and doesn’t cost a dime, we can recommend the game to all puzzle devotees.

This free game might be simple, but it still packs a formidable challenge. You might think of Blobs Peg Solitaire as an update to the time-tested formula found in games such as Chinese checkers. Your goal is to jump small and slimy green blobs over one another to remove as many as possible from the board. If more the one blob remains at the end of the game, you don’t pass that level. The game offers 100 game boards varying from simple to near impossible, which ensures that it will provide entertainment for quite some time. The feature set is rather small, but you can choose to adjust the sound effects volume and play levels at random to spice things up. The Flash-based graphics are about what you’d expect from a game like this, which is to say they’re not amazing, but not bad either. Really, our only real complaint here is that installing the program clutters your PC with a few extra desktop shortcuts. If you’re a puzzle fan looking for a free way to kill some time, Blobs Peg Solitaire will be right up your alley.

Clear away the extra promotional icons and HangARoo makes a welcome desktop addition. The Flash version of hangman features a sass-talking kangaroo who, thank goodness, does not attempt an Australian accent. He stands on a scaffold with a noose around his neck, critiquing your letter choices until you either guess the word or phrase–or send him to heaven. You can pick four incorrect letters before you lose the game. To choose letters, you can click the letter buttons or use the keyboard. Some puzzles will pop up little bubbles with trivia about the subject. The audio works nicely, and you can adjust the volume on a slider. The interface shows an eFlash ticker at the bottom, and the program adds extra icons to your desktop and links to your Start menu folder. Uninstalling the game doesn’t remove the promotional icons or links, which isn’t polite. Still, hangman fans might find a few icons a small price to pay for a free game as fun as HangARoo.
