Working with multiple e-mail addresses and inboxes often requires a management client. Mozilla Thunderbird for Mac, despite its dated look, performs well as an open-source e-mail manager.

As an open-source project, this program is available as freeware with no restrictions or payments required. Download and installation occurred quickly and without any problems. After initial setup, which prompted us as to whether the program should be the default email client, Mozilla Thunderbird for Mac welcomed us with a well-designed main interface. Aesthetically, the graphics were dated and would have been appropriate for a program several years old, as opposed to a newer application. As freeware, this was not an overall detriment. While there were no dedicated instructions, menus easily walk the user through entering email data for syncing. The application quickly began downloading the existing inbox contents. Buttons for composing emails and other typical functions were well placed and easy to locate. Even with multiple email addresses entered, it was easy to read the messages and determine from which address they originated. The email reading window was also large, an appropriate choice for a manager.

For those looking to manage their email using a client, Mozilla Thunderbird for Mac functions well and provides all expected features.

This program starts off as a pretty basic-looking browser, but you can easily configure it to suit your preferences. The overall look of the browser interface is similar to other popular browsers, with toolbars, address bar, and bookmark bar all in the expected places. The similarities between this browser and other browsers are beneficial as they allow the user to become comfortable with the program more quickly. The program includes an integrated e-mail application that is loaded with features and also includes instant messaging capabilities. Surfing works smoothly and the browsing speed is similar to other current browsers. This is a free program that is developed by volunteers based on community requests. Users can get involved in developing this program further by suggesting future modifications or by volunteering with development work.

SeaMonkey for Mac is a functional Web browser that has successfully integrated e-mail and instant message applications. This program would be appropriate for both personal and business Internet usage.

Mozilla Firefox for Mac is a Web browsing alternative that offers a full range of features to let you peruse your favorite sites with ease. This program offers all of the functionality you’d expect from a Web browser through a clean and familiar interface.

Pros

Site optimization: If you’re looking for an alternative to Safari on your Mac, you may find that some sites load more quickly and function better through Firefox. Especially if you have trouble with certain sites you visit a lot in Safari or another browser, it may be worth it to try out Firefox to see if it can run them more smoothly.

Tiled history: When you open a new tab in Firefox, you’ll see a tiled display of the sites you’ve visited lately or most often, so you can get back to your favorites with ease. Or if you want to visit a site that’s not displayed, you can use the search bar located in the upper right-hand corner of the interface.

Cons

Exclusive search box: While the box for URL entry also says you can enter a search term, we were unable to get any real search results in this way. Using the designated search box seems to be the only option for completing a keyword search. This does not have to be a significant drawback except that the program seems to indicate it should work the other way as well.

Poor tile loading: The tiled screen with recent pages visited didn’t load terribly thoroughly, and most tiles didn’t contain images of the actual sites they described. They also didn’t always take us to where we were trying to go.

Bottom Line

Firefox for Mac is a good option to try if you have trouble accessing certain sites through Safari or other browsers. However, because of the issues we experienced during testing, we still prefer Safari or Chrome for everyday surfing on the Mac.

Mozilla Firefox is a popular Web browser available on a variety of platforms. Its code DNA reaches back to the dawn of the World Wide Web and has shaped other software and software companies, including The Tor Project (Windows, Android, Mac), the Opera browser (Windows, Android Mac) Adobe Acrobat (Windows, Android, Mac, iOS) Oracle, and Logitech.

Pros

Battery-friendly video streaming: We tested video streaming on both Firefox and Chrome. While Chrome usually provides smoother page scrolling, Firefox surprisingly pulled ahead when it came to CPU power consumption with HD videos on YouTube, one of the most popular browsing activities. This power consumption has a direct effect on how long your battery lasts, and on the likelihood of a laptop fan noisily kicking in to keep your PC cool.

Easy reading thanks to smooth text scrolling: On a text-heavy Web page, Firefox does a better job than Google Chrome (Windows, Mac, Android, iOS) at making vertical scrolling scale to your Windows mouse settings. While the default scroll speed is relatively slow, Firefox has a lot more steps between “not enough” and “way too much.” Text-heavy webpages also tend to glide up and down more smoothly in response to your mouse wheel movements, which makes it easier for your eye to track where you are on a page. However, Chrome still scrolls more smoothly on media-heavy pages.

Highly customizable interface navigation: Mozilla introduced a UI overhaul in November 2013 that didn’t go over very well. Among other things, the standard menu design was replaced with a “hamburger” button that opened to reveal a number of icons. On the bright side, Mozilla gives developers deep access into modifying Firefox’s behavior, and one of them quickly introduced Classic Theme Restorer, which ended up giving Firefox the most user-customizable interface of any browser on the market, even three years later. With Classic Theme Restorer, the bookmarks button doesn’t have to look (confusingly) like a clipboard; you can tell at a glance which custom search engine you have loaded; and you can freely mix design elements from both the “classic” UI and the overhaul.

Cons

Underwhelming performance on media-heavy Web pages: Embedded videos, animated images, and large static images have become a very popular way for both advertisers and content creators to reach their audiences. But this rich-media environment takes its toll on a Web browser that can’t load all that data smoothly. Chrome feels prepared for this evolution, while Firefox arguably requires an ad blocker to prevent chunky scrolling and delayed loading of different sections on the page. (Firefox on Android fares much better in this department.) Basically, Chrome feels optimized for visual elements, while Firefox feels optimized for reading.

Mozilla has committed to finally replacing the Gecko page rendering engine with a new one called Quantum, but the company doesn’t expect to make it available until the end of 2017.

Sync requires managing another account: With Google Chrome, you can log in to your Google account (which you already have if you use Gmail or subscribe to YouTube channels), and it will pull in your bookmarks, add-ons, and themes from any other device where you’ve used the Chrome browser with that Google account. With Firefox, you need to create a separate Firefox account, which you won’t use anywhere else. Thankfully, though, the login screen works just fine with password managers like LastPass (Chrome desktop, Firefox desktop, iOS, Android).

Bottom Line

Though it needs some initial setup to perform smoothly, Firefox is a robust and trustworthy browser.
