PhotoScape X for Mac is a photo viewing and editing tool for Mac that provides many of the same tools as iPhoto, but in a separate interface that was often faster in our tests than the native app. While not as feature rich or as integrated with OS X as Apple’s native photo viewer, PhotoScape X offers a suite of tools that makes photo viewing much easier.

Installation of PhotoScape X took only a few moments and the app loaded immediately. After setting the theme and switching to the photo viewer, the app was able to load all of the images on our test computer in just under three seconds, scanning the entire hard drive and pulling more than 800 photos into a single view, quickly. Clicking on any of these images, we could immediately apply edits and then save the file back to the hard drive in the same location or separately. The interface here is very much like a file viewer, so it’s not pretty, but it’s very functional and the themes add a bit of flavor to what would be a bland app, otherwise. The performance here is fantastic, though, and while additional features like social integration are missing, the app is a very solid replacement for your native photo viewing app.

PhotoScape X is a free app that works very well to replace iPhoto or any other photo viewing apps you are currently using. It’s fast, responsive, and has added tools like GIF creation that help it stand out against the competition; and with no upgrade fee needed down the line, it’s a very good app that could make itself at home on any newer Macs.

Pros

Tons of features: No matter what photo editing program you’re used to, you’ll find the tools you’re looking for in this app. Crop your photos with straight or circular borders, apply multiple filters, and even edit your photos in batches to save time. And when you’re ready, you can string them together into animated GIFs with customized transition effects.

Effects preview: To ensure that you’re satisfied with the effects you choose for each photo, this program lets you preview each change before you make it. And because each effect, itself, is adjustable, you can make all of the adjustments you want on a sliding scale in the preview window before you finalize the changes on the photo, itself.

Cons

Redundant interface: The home screen for PhotoScape features icons for various tools arranged in a circle on one side, with links to tutorials and other special pages on the other. But most of the tools found on the home screen can also be accessed through the tabs at the top of the interface. While this doesn’t prevent you from accessing all of the features you want, it can be a bit confusing at first, and is redundant at the very least.

Bottom Line

PhotoScape is a convenient and versatile photo editing program. It delivers on all promised features, works smoothly, and costs nothing. So if you’re looking for a new photo app, this is a good one to take for a test drive.

VideoBlend for Mac offers a set of video editing tools that are easy enough for just about everyone to use. With an intuitive interface and some really useful features, VideoBlend is a great option for users who want to get started editing videos and have some fun in the process.

The app’s interface is attractive and easy to navigate, with clearly labeled icons across the top. One thing we loved about VideoBlend right off the bat was that its interface is notably uncluttered compared to many other video editing programs. It’s easy to open files to work with either by selecting them through Finder or by dragging and dropping them onto the program’s interface. VideoBlend lets users split videos into different files, convert them into different formats, rotate them, adjust their volume, add music, and extract audio with ease. The two features that most impressed us, however, were the downloader and GIF creator. Downloading videos from YouTube and Vimeo was a snap, as was converting videos into animated GIFs. We never thought we’d be able to recommend a video editor that didn’t come with a Help file, but VideoBlend for Mac truly doesn’t need one; it’s that easy to use. Overall, we were highly impressed with VideoBlend for Mac. It may lack advanced features that more experienced users would like to see, but those who want an uncomplicated way to perform basic editing functions will find that this app more than meets their needs.
