MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition is a free file- and data-recovery tool for Windows. It bundles several tools that together can recover lost and deleted data from hard drives, USB drives, and nearly every kind of disk or directory that can hold (and lose) data. Of course, not all lost data can be recovered, and there’s no guarantee that recovered data will be intact or still usable. But MiniTool’s modules are focused on specific data-recovery tasks, giving you a good chance of getting your data back. Its wizard-based operation and simple interface make it easy enough for beginners: just follow each step and you’ll do fine. The free edition is limited to 1GB of data. That’s a lot, and more than enough for most truly critical data, though not enough for, say, a copied DVD. A paid upgrade is available, if you need more.

MiniTool’s installer warns that you should never install the program on the disk partition containing the lost data since that can cause irretrievable data loss. It’s always best to run data-recovery operations from a separate, healthy disk, and usually necessary as well. MiniTool’s colorful, simple user interface has large buttons for its five modules: Undelete Recovery, Damaged Partition Recovery, Lost Partition Recovery, Digital Media Recovery, and CD/DVD Recovery. Two more buttons let you contact technical support and buy a bootable CD (you can create a bootable system repair disk with your system’s existing Windows Backup, too).

We strongly advise against damaging or deleting a partition on purpose, but we had no qualms about trying MiniTool on data and partitions we’d created specifically for deleting and recovering, starting with our D drive. MiniTool quickly scanned the drive and displayed the results in a neat tree view. We could click through to recover just certain files or select the whole thing via check boxes. MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition will only recover partitions up to 1GB, which clearly isn’t enough for today’s disks, though it’s enough for many USB drives, which lead hard lives and can be damaged by rough handling. Certainly we recommend trying the freeware before the premium version.

All scans run quickly and display results, so you don’t have to wait around to get your files back.

Lots of help: Tips show up periodically as you’re working in the program to help you find the right tool. There is also a Technical Support page that includes links to a Manual, FAQs Page, and an email address for 24/7 technical support.

Cons

Intimidating interface: Once you get past the initial screen by making a selection about the type of recovery you want to attempt, the app’s interface can get a little overwhelming, especially for beginners. However, if you’re willing to invest a little time in reading the manual and the other Help resources, you can figure out what the next steps are regardless of your level of computer knowledge.

Bottom Line

MiniTool Data Recovery for Mac is a useful and versatile program that can help you recover many files you otherwise wouldn’t be able to access. Although it can get a bit technical as you work through the steps of data recovery, the various resources provided can give you all the information you need to complete a successful retrieval of your files. The program is free to try with a limit of 1MB of restored data, and it costs $79 to buy.

MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 8 adds disk conversion and copying to what was already one of our favorite disk partitioning tools, free or not. It creates, deletes, aligns, moves, resizes, recovers, splits, joins, hides, copies, and converts partitions or entire disks. It can change drive letters, label partitions and volumes, edit properties, and check file systems. It does all that and more for free, though premium upgrades for business environments, servers, and special needs are available.

Pros

Powerful and flexible: MiniTool Partition Wizard has the tools advanced users need to manage all their disk drives. We used the Split Partition tool’s slider to size and create an 80GB partition on an external hard drive in mere seconds.

Undo it: An Undo button lets you back off changes before they’re irrevocable.

Help: A fully indexed and illustrated Help file explains each feature and process clearly.

Wizards and extras: Both wizard-based and separate tools make MiniTool one of the most flexible partition managers we’ve tried at any price. It can wipe drives, create bootable CDs, change drive serial numbers, create dynamic disks, and export disk configurations, too.

Cons

Data killer: The only fault we’ve found with MiniTool Partition Wizard is common to all such tools: it can destroy data when used carelessly (always pay attention, take your time, and back up your data when formatting or partitioning disk drives).

Bottom Line

MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition 8 does what pricey premium tools do, and more — yet it’s free. It remains our primary disk utility.
