Fast Duplicate File Finder is a free version of a shareware tool. If you’ve tried duplicate finders before and are still recovering, not to worry: Fast Duplicate File Finder uses advanced algorithms that compare the actual binary content of a wide range of file types, not just name, size, and other attributes that may or may not be accurate indicators of duplicate files. It can search not only for 100 percent duplicates but also for similar files based on a variable level of similarity. As with all duplicate file finders, we recommend checking carefully before you delete anything it finds.

Fast Duplicate File Finder’s interface has a familiar layout, with a main window and panels with draggable borders. We clicked Add Folder on the toolbar and selected a folder of digital snapshots, opting to scan subfolders as well. Our selections appeared in the Folders panel, including, surprisingly, the parent folder. We didn’t want to scan the parent folder (it’s large) so we clicked Remove Folder just below in the Scan options. We selected a 100 percent similar scan, though we also tried the feature that lets you scan for similar files based on a variable percentage of similarity that we selected from a rotary button, a useful feature that takes longer but finds resized and lower-quality copies. We clicked Start Scan, and the program quickly displayed all pairs and groups of duplicates in the main display, including size, directory, and other information, with the duplicates all checked for removal or deletion sorted by date and size of the file. The Preview pane let us see each file for visual verification. We simply checked those files we wanted to remove, unchecked those we didn’t, selected a destination folder for the duplicates, and clicked Move Checked Files, though we could just as easily have deleted them. We opened the original and duplicate folders and verified that only duplicates had been moved. Fast Duplicate File Finder also lets users create, save, and return to Projects for regular checks.

The Free version of this program disables some of the Pro version’s features, such as the Filters button, and limits some of its capabilities. It did a good job of finding duplicates, though, which is all we were hoping for.

Rather than relying on file names or format to identify copies, this program compares images visually, and that leads to a more accurate analysis of what files may be duplicates.

Cross-format analysis: No matter what format your images are stored in, and particularly if they’re in different formats in different places, this app can scan and compare them. It supports more than 400 file formats, including many from RAW camera files. So no matter why you wound up with duplicates, you’ll be able to find and delete them.

Scan options: Each time you run a scan, you can choose to include images with smaller file sizes if the dimensions are equal, images with smaller dimensions, and images with smaller file sizes regardless of the dimensions, depending on what you’re looking for and what kinds of images you’d like to remove. You can also search for certain file sizes and file extensions if you know more specifically what you’re looking for.

Cons

Only manual selections: You can’t use this app to automatically scan your whole computer. Instead, you have to enter specific folders or locations to scan, which may take some time if you’re not sure where duplicate image files might be located.

Bottom Line

Visual Similarity Duplicate Image Finder is an innovative program that can help you save space on your hard drive by eliminating unwanted duplicate photos. The visual approach it takes means that it can find duplicates other programs can’t, as they may only look for duplicate file names. You can try this app for free, but you can’t delete with the trial version, and only the first ten file names are displayed in the search results. Purchasing a full license costs $24.95.

Folder Size is a free Windows utility that scans your drives or folders and displays detailed information about the size of their contents so you can see where the disk space went. It displays the sizes of files and folders as well as their percentage of total disk size.

Folder Size uses a layout common to many such utilities, mostly because it’s the most efficient design: toolbar, left-hand tree view, and main window. Folder Size displayed all our disk drives with their total size, space used, and free space listed below the tree view. We clicked on our C drive and then clicked the Scan arrow. The program took a few minutes to scan 40GB of files; when it finished, it displayed the file structure in the tree view with the selected directory displayed in the main view. This view displayed file names and sizes; percentage of the total in numbers and bar graphs; total files, folders, and subfolders; dates created, modified, and accessed; attributes; and even the file’s owner in expandable, draggable, rotating headings. We could also customize which headings we wanted to display and quickly choose file sizes from bytes to gigabytes. Buttons let us easily navigate through our file directories. The Help file is fairly basic, but then so is the program. It’s not designed to do tricks; it simply displays detailed file information quickly, which is a much more useful and frequently needed capability than it seems.

The space below the main window displays charts of the program’s findings, but we had trouble with this feature, possibly because it requires Adobe Flash Player installed in Internet Explorer to work. We had Flash Player in IE, but it’s not available for 64-bit IE, and the Flash installer seemed to balk at the difference. The screenshots show nice-looking charts that can be printed and exported. We’d like to see either less reliance on IE or greater compatibility in accessing Flash, but beyond that, Folder Size is quite a useful tool.
