MacGourmet Deluxe can help you collect, edit, use, and share your favorite recipes and recipe-related notes in an easy, intuitive, iTunes-style interface, which is much improved over previous versions. This Deluxe version includes all three optional plug-ins for MacGourmet: the Mealplan (to help schedule meals and sync up with iCal), Cookbook (for creating and sharing PDF cookbooks), and built-in nutritional data from the USDA database (which makes it easy to calculate nutritional info for entire recipes). The main recipe interface is highly customizable and includes a large, easy-to-read “Chef View” for laptop-assisted cooking, which you can control with speech recognition or an Apple Remote. MacGourmet’s recipe import assistant and integration with Safari makes importing recipes from the Web almost effortless (especially for the app’s supported list of over 40 popular recipe sites).

MacGourmet also makes it easy to compile cooking notes and shopping lists (for easy printing or export), along with a shopping list history. Tools for taking notes on wine help you keep track of personal ratings, bottle labels, and “cellar info” (such as date opened and maturation date), and recent updates also help out aspiring food bloggers with support for MacJournal. Overall, MacGourmet is one of the best applications of its kind on the Mac–and though slightly pricey, the Deluxe version offers a good value given the cost of the optional plug-ins.

The developers behind MacJournal admit that you can use a traditional word processor or text editor for journaling–but they say that’s like Lance Armstrong using a bike from Wal-Mart to race in the Tour de France. Aside from the fact that Armstrong would probably still kick butt on a Wal-Mart bike, they’ve got a point: MacJournal is one of the best journaling programs available for the Mac, with a huge range of features that are useful whether you’re keeping a journal for yourself, taking notes for classes or meetings, organizing random snippets of info, or prepping blog posts offline.

MacJournal gives you a fairly intuitive, feel-good interface (especially its green-text-on-black, full-screen writing mode), and a ton of tools for organizing your thoughts and words, including a built-in calendar, good search function, a system of nested entries and journals, and keyword tags, labels, priorities, and other opportunities for annotation. You can include nearly any sort of content, from movies to PDFs to podcasts, and bloggers will like that its formatting translates well to HTML, with support for TypePad, Blogger, LiveJournal, and more. You also get password protection and encryption, integration with Apple’s Mail, and a wide variety of export options, such as PDF, HTML, Word, and even iPod Notes.

The only major issue we can fault MacJournal for is the 15-day trial period, which is a little short for this sort of application, especially given its rich and complex feature set. This most recent version adds minor interface enhancements and assorted bug fixes.

Paperless for Mac is designed to organize and manage all of your documents, receipts, and other important paperwork and PDFs in a single interface, and it does a decent job of it. While the setup process can be a bit involved and we experienced some slowdowns when importing files, the organizational tools provided by Paperless make it a great central storage solution on your Mac for all of the stray documents you scan on a regular basis.

The installation process for Paperless can be extensive as it installs libraries, imports files, and requests access to various resources on your computer. Once done, however, the app should be ready to use for any scanning, importing, or document management and organization on your machine. The interface is clean and very reminiscent of other Apple libraries with cover shots of all of your PDFs in a single, searchable space. You can add a new document by scanning it with your scanner, use OCR to recognize and extract text from a document, or create new folders to organize your documents in special categories. Because the library processes everything separately from your Mac, the import process and opening a file for the first time can be slow, so the use of Paperless can be frustrating the first few times through, but once your library is set it’s a solid replacement for Finder-level organization.

If you have a lot of documents lying around, scans all over your computer, or receipts you’d like to digitize, consider downloading Paperless for Mac. The speed can be frustrating at first, but as a receipt and document organization tool, it does a fine job.
