Leech for Mac is a useful tool for those who download a large number of files and are tired of being at the mercy of their browser. From easy start/stop pausing to a secondary interface that won’t interrupt your downloads if the browser crashes, Leech is a solution for a number of download issues and it works very smoothly without taking up much space or too many resources on your computer.

Installation of Leech is very fast, moving a small file to your Applications folder. You will need to verify its source before opening it in newer versions of OS X, but after that you can start using it immediately. Just drag and drop a URL into the interface and it will automatically start the download process. It works with any properly validated download link, as well as photos and HTML files. You can change a few things such as where files download and you can set a timer to turn the app off and shut down after the current queue is finished. Download speed was not affected at all in our tests and the app doesn’t take up many resources — both big pluses for this type of tool.

If you need a third-party download solution that won’t be at the mercy of your browser or other bulky software that can crash on occasion, download Leech for Mac. It runs fast, is free to try up to 25 times, and it allows you much greater control over the files you download without being too cumbersome. This is a great all-around tool.

This excellent little utility (formerly known as File List) can help you rename multiple files at the same time, in just about any way that you can imagine–for example, if you want to name a bunch of photos in a sequence or change some PC files from ugly all caps over to lowercase.

Name Mangler gives you a clean, intuitive interface for numbering sequentially, finding and replacing, changing case, setting extensions, adding prefixes and suffixes, and removing and inserting characters. Name Mangler also offers an Advanced option that lets you define your own renaming rules, combining the standard options and letting you describe new file names as expressions–and the ability to use regular expressions gives you almost limitless possibilities. This app even lets you save configurations as droplets, so you can execute the same set of renaming rules again and again with a simple drag and drop. If you need to frequently rename files, Name Mangler is a good value, and you can try it for free for the first 25 launches.

Butler for Mac allows you to create a number of custom menus, shortcuts, and abbreviations for your Mac’s desktop that speed up how you use your computer. From adding search interfaces to the menu bar to creating shortcuts that actually learn as you use your machine, Butler’s goal is to make your Mac easier to use for you.

Pros

Wide range of customizations: Butler’s customization options are plentiful. The file launcher is found in many other apps, but in Butler it learns from your uses and starts providing shorter and more accurate abbreviation support. Combined with a central bookmark manager, menu-based Web search, and extended clipboard so you can store multiple things at once, it’s a very useful tool.

Fast and lightweight: In our tests, Butler had a minimal impact on performance or battery life. It sits in the background and only appears when the selected hotkeys were pressed. This made for a very interactive, but unobtrusive support tool.

Cons

Interface needs work: Built into Mac’s preferences template, Butler doesn’t look all that pretty when you open it to make adjustments. Finding specific options can be hard as well, and Help menus often look like blocks of text. It’s not impenetrable, but it will take time to set up your shortcuts, initially.

Bottom Line

With the exception of the sometimes cumbersome menu, Butler is a fast, incredibly handy tool that offers a range of solutions to problems that you might have with your Mac. Combining the touch key tools that many other apps have into one solution, Butler is a must try for anyone who wants to be more efficient on their Mac.
