Magix Music Maker 2015 offers studio-quality multitrack music production capabilities in an easy-to-use package. You can drag and drop songs and other files into it, record and mix high-resolution audio, and publish your tunes on sites like SoundCloud. The full version has 99 tracks and more than 3,000 clips and loops in a wide range of musical genres and styles, with more available online. New features include analog synths and dubstep and hip-hop drums.

Pros

Unique layout: Music Maker’s layout is quite unique and much more efficient than similar tools we’ve tried. For example, each track has individual Solo, Mute, and Record buttons, as well as an effects (FX) menu.

Quick start: A quick start splash screen and a welcome screen made it easy to open existing projects, start a new one, and load demos and video tutorials. We could create music by dragging and dropping tunes, record music using a microphone or other inputs, mix tunes using preconfigured templates, and publish and share music online.

Fun: Features like drag and drop keep Music Maker fun to use.

Extended trial: You can extend the seven-day, feature-limited free trial period to 30 days by registering.

Cons

Nags: The free trial involves clicking through frequent and consecutive nag screens.

Bottom Line

Magix Music Maker 2015 creates pro-quality music. It’s easy to use, too, and that spells fun.

MAGIX Xtreme Print Studio offers a fairly easy tool for creating cases and labels for your CDs and DVDs. It’s not the most intuitive program we’ve used, but with a bit of experimentation, we caught on pretty quickly.

It’s not always easy to find what you’re looking for in the program’s interface. For example, we couldn’t find an Insert button or command for adding images to our work. What we wanted was actually the Import command, but in searching the Help file we learned that you can also drag and drop images from Explorer. We like that the program comes with a variety of templates for different CD and DVD packages, although it might not be obvious to everyone which template needs to be used for a particular project. Perhaps our favorite feature was the Edit Playlist function; this brings up a separate screen where users can select a cover image and then enter the title and duration of each track. This makes for an extremely quick and easy way to create basic CD packaging that you can leave as-is or customized further by adding more images, liner notes, and more. Overall, we found the program fairly easy to use, and we think it’s a much better choice than using a Sharpie and an index card–not that we’ve ever done that!

MAGIX Xtreme Print Studio is free, although it does require registration after seven days. It installs and uninstalls without issues. We recommend this program to all users.

As the latest version of one of the world’s leading professional audio solutions, Sound Forge Pro 11 brings workflow enhancements and tweaks, new signal effects plug-ins, one-touch recording, new display options, and restore and repair tools. It’s a great piece of software, though somewhat costly.

Pros

Reliable, professional solution: At this level of complexity, Sony Sound Forge Pro 11 looks and feels like a mature product. Its power and stability ensure that all your audio needs will be satisfied to the last detail.

Audio for video: With videography in mind, the new version supports popular video formats like AVI, WMV, MPEG-1, and MPEG-2, as well as several video-specific functions.

Cons

Price: At $500 for a new installation and $200 for the upgrade, Sound Forge Pro is a serious investment. Given that version 10 is already very stable and powerful, we don’t feel there are enough new features to make the upgrade worthwhile.

Competition: Powerful and popular competitors like Cubase offer more affordable alternatives. If you’re an existing user deeply accustomed to the software’s every nook and cranny, you probably won’t move house; but if you’re a new professional user you will certainly feel tempted to try more accessible solutions.

Bottom Line

With its strong set of features and many options, Sony Sound Forge Pro 11 satisfies the needs of professionals. Although the feature jump from the previous version is not that great, this solution remains one of the best professional audio software packages. The upgrade isn’t indispensable, but it’s certainly worthwhile.

Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 offers easy audio recording, powerful editing, noise and vocals removal, and audio enhancements, as well as plenty of audio effects. It impresses with its capabilities and pleasing design, but may alienate users because of its price tag.

Pros

Complete package: Whether you want to produce a final audio edit for CD tracks or record a karaoke song, Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 will not disappoint you. It basically turns your PC into a one-stop recording studio with all the features you can ask for. Support has been extended to 32-bit 192kHz from the previous version, to cover even the highest resolution formats.

Easy to use and reliable: This app is 100 percent about audio. Drawing experience and features from Sony’s professional offerings, this app provides a great environment for making music.

Cons

High price point: Sound Forge Audio Studio is at the top of the price range of home audio software. Many people hardly require all its features and will be more attracted by cheaper or even free products. Another category of users that would be reluctant to choose Sound Forge Audio Studio is video editors. The more advanced video editing packages have audio modules of their own, leaving even less room for pure audio products.

Bottom Line

Overall, Sound Forge Audio Studio proves to be powerful and functional and, in spite of its sophistication, remains accessible to beginners. The only issue with it is the high price, but we feel that in this case you’re really buying quality. If you are worried about the price, consider looking for bundling options with Sony’s video editing software.
