iExplorer facilitates the transfer of files from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch to your computer selectively to create backups. Whether it’s music, voice memos, photos, SMS, or anything else, you can get it off your device and onto your computer without having to sync the whole thing each time.

Pros

Comprehensive detection: When you connect your device to the computer, the app recognizes it right away. It quickly loads all files as well, not just certain categories, so you can manage your entire data set through this single app.

Clear interface: Data detected on your device is clearly displayed in the app’s interface. For instance, you can see previews of all photos, along with the date and time modified, file type, file size, and resolution. You can also export selected music tracks to iTunes or play them in the preview pane, and navigating from one file type to another is straightforward, thanks to the category list on the left-hand side of the screen.

Cons

Frequent pop-ups: Almost as soon as you open the demo version of this app, you’ll be greeted with a pop-up asking you to purchase the full version. These pop-ups continue to show up quite frequently as you experiment with the app, and they are so persistent that it actually makes it hard to evaluate the program.

Crashing: We did encounter some crashing issues as well while we were testing this app. Each time, the app started right back up again fine, however.

Bottom Line

iExplorer is a complete tool for backing up data from your iOS device to your computer. While we did have a bit of trouble with crashing during testing, the other features make it at least worth trying out.

Phone Disk for Mac enables you to conveniently transfer files to your iOS devices as you would to a regular thumb drive using only your favorite file manager: the Finder. This premium app automatically prepares mobile devices for USB access as soon as they are connected to your computer and allows convenient drag-and-drop interactions. It’s a powerful, well-designed app you will want to try.

Phone Disk for Mac installs along with the MacFUSE framework, after a guided setup. A reboot will be needed after the installation. Once you start the trial version, you will notice a pop-up informing you that you can transfer only up to 100MB worth of data. You will also notice a new icon on the Menu Bar, which turns to color whenever a compatible device is connected. In our tests the file transfer was smooth, with speeds averaging around 5MB/s. We have found that even though the Phone Disk is using the mobile device, we retained full sync and backup functionality in iTunes. Due to Apple’s restrictions, most of the iOS file system is inaccessible for interaction unless the device in question is jailbroken and the appropriate option is active in the preferences.

If you’re looking for a convenient way to back up important files on a device that’s always with you, you will want Phone Disk for Mac installed on your computer. While it’s a premium app in a space crowded with free alternatives, the ease of use that it offers completely justifies the price tag.

Sharepod facilitates the transfer of music from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch into iTunes as smoothly and quickly as possible. With this program, you won’t have to worry about losing music, and you can even transfer entire playlists to your computer to avoid having to recreate them.

Pros

Search and import: Through this program, you can import all of the songs, playlists, and voice memos from your mobile device to either iTunes or another folder on your computer. You can also search through your music to find the individual tracks you want to import, and you can import in chunks rather than having to sync everything at the same time.

Lots of info: In addition to displaying the titles of all of the music you have on your device, this app also includes lots of other information about each track. For instance, you can see at a glance the Artist, Album, and Genre, as well as the total number of times you’ve played it and the total time for each track.

Cons

Clunky controls: It’s hard to perform certain functions through this program that seem like they should be pretty basic. For instance, selecting multiple files at once almost never works, even though that’s essential to performing the program’s main function.

Not fully integrated: In order for the import of files to iTunes to work, iTunes needs to be open ahead of time. The program can’t open it automatically, and there are no prompts that let you know about this step ahead of time.

Bottom Line

Sharepod provides a convenient service, especially if you’re often moving music back and forth between a mobile device and iTunes on your Mac. It could be smoother to work with, but it does offer some nice features and useful functionality. You can try it out for free with a limit of 10 files per transfer, and the full purchase price is $20.

Advanced users often want to work with the root directories on their iPods, but this can’t be done using iTunes. With iExplorer for Mac, you can manage your iPod media and work with root directories and other advanced features. Still, its price may be too high for most people.

Available as a free trial version with some limitations, the full program costs $35.00 as an upgrade. Exactly which features are limited in the free trial is not listed or apparent from use. The app was quick to install and load. iExplorer for Mac immediately determines if an iPod or iPhone is connected and prompts the user to connect one if not. As quickly as iTunes would, iExplorer reads the plugged-in device and gives an initial list of songs available. Surprisingly, it also appeared to sync with iTunes and listed other devices linked to the account that were not connected. While testing we noticed that the interface was well-designed and looked similar to the one native to iTunes. The basic media management features were also easy to use.

Access to root directories may be a good option for advanced users or those with jailbroken phones, but less experienced owners should be more careful due to the ability to delete necessary files.

In short, advanced users may find iExplorer’s features worth the price, but for others a free program may be a better option.

With an easy ergonomic interface, painless installation, and extremely rapid conversion rates, Adapter for Mac enables users to effortlessly change media files to other file types with no more than a few clicks of the mouse. It also makes sharing converted files a breeze.

There were not many bumps in the road for this application. Adapter for Mac installed quickly, and, with our permission, it also installed the necessary plug-ins without any trouble at all. The main function of the program is to convert image, video, or audio files to another type of file. Almost every major file type is supported, including the commonly used MP3, M4A, WAV, JPG, BMP, GIF, and AVI. It even supports conversion to and from some less commonly used extensions like .M4R and AC3. The file conversion menu at the top-right of the app is very helpful and includes a list of all the supported file types. The app allows for drag-and-drop insertion of files into the queue, and then will populate a list of available conversions for the user. All we had to do was pick a conversion and press the “Play” button, and most conversions happened almost instantaneously. You can also queue up jobs for the application to complete if you have large amounts of files to convert. This app works seamlessly and effortlessly, and is on the whole a very impressive product with a good layout and good access to instructions and support.

Adapter for Mac could conceivably be useful for almost anyone who likes to share media online. Conceivably it is an application that both amateurs and industry professionals could use, since it is accessible but also competent and efficient.

Both aspiring disc jockeys and those looking to experiment with music may have trouble finding a way to work with digital audio files. ItDJ for Mac accurately simulates a DJ’s equipment using digital media.

ItDJ for Mac comes in its full form as freeware, with no payments required for additional features. The program installed fairly well, but one additional download for playing certain audio files was required before it completed. Upon starting, ItDJ immediately synced up with iTunes to make the digital music files available. The interface would be confusing for anyone who isn’t already familiar with the standard functions of DJ equipment or the terminology used. A beginner’s manual would have been a welcome addition to the program, but after playing around with it for several minutes, basic operations became clear.

At first, the program functioned well, but after a few minutes and without explanation, it stopped producing sound. The only solution was to restart the program, but this did solve the issue. Despite appearing to be a simple program, it took up a lot of CPU power, and the cooling fan ran noticeably higher. Overall, the sound output was good and the program functioned as expected, albeit with a few bugs.

Despite being freeware with limited support, ItDJ for Mac works well and allows mixing of digital audio, although professionals may want to search for a more stable, fully functional program.
