If you have a Blu-ray player and don’t want to or can’t use a native Mac media player app, Mac Blu-ray Player can be used to view Blu-rays in addition to DVDs, but some may find the price tag for the full version too high.

The installation and setup of a free trial version of Mac Blu-ray Player for Mac went smoothly. The initial menus are intuitive and well-designed. The trial version will only function a limited number of times, however, before the user must buy the full version at $59.95. Technical support is available, and the developer’s Web site is user-friendly. After we inserted a disc, the program recognized and started playing it quickly and cleanly. Menus for controlling the movie playback are easy to locate and use. In addition to DVDs and Blu-rays, the player can handle several other video file formats and those for audio. The program purports to allow users to include their own subtitles, though we didn’t test this.

While Mac Blu-ray Player is well-designed and functional, those looking for a simple disc player app may find its high price off-putting. However, if you have an external Blu-ray player and your Mac does not have native software to accomodate it, this program may be an attractive option.

Macgo Free Mac Media Player is a basic but efficient program to play all kinds of media files right on your Mac, whether they originate on your computer or on a disk. As soon as you install this program, it’s ready to go, so you won’t have to worry about managing complicated configurations or setups before you start playing your files.

Pros

Automatic associations: The only thing you need to do when you first install this program is specify which types of files you’d like it to be associated with by default. You can always adjust these settings later on, too, but it’s nice to be able to decide that this will be your default player for only certain types of files rather than all or none.

Quick access: The basic controls you need to open new files and manage playback are intuitive and easy to find. This makes the media player a good option for users of all experience levels and ensures that even beginning users can play their files with ease.

Cons

Under the surface: While this surface interface is clear enough, things are not so smooth once you get below the surface. Advanced features exist, but they’re hard to find, and even when you do find them, it’s not always clear how to use them.

Bottom Line

Macgo Free Mac Media Player is a good option if you’re looking for a basic program to use for a variety of media file types. It does offer more advanced features, even if they are a bit difficult to unearth, but basic features are easily accessible to everyone.
