Passwords drive us crazy. With bank accounts, credit cards, insurance policies, social networking sites, student loans, pharmacies, and many other sites all demanding passwords, it’s a lot to keep up with. LastPass for Chrome is an easy and secure way to manage passwords, and we wish we’d had it a long time ago.

LastPass has a lot of features, and it took us a little while to get acquainted with everything, but overall it’s very easy to use. At first glance it may seem that LastPass doesn’t do anything that you can’t already do in Chrome; like LastPass, Chrome will store user IDs and passwords for you. But LastPass does much more than that. You can also have the program automatically fill in forms for you, and you can store as much information as you’re comfortable with; just enter your name and address if you want, or have LastPass store your credit card and bank account information to make online shopping easier. The program also has a secure notes feature that lets you keep other sensitive information handy but safe, and a password generator that creates ironclad passwords. On the whole, we found that LastPass worked well, although it had trouble with a few sites. It couldn’t handle our bank’s Web site, which requires our user ID on one page and our password on another. And the log-in for our student loans requires our Social Security number, the first two letters of our last name, our birth date, and a PIN; we tried to use the form-filling feature for this, but for some reason it only filled two of the fields. These sorts of situations are a good time to use the secure note feature; the program won’t auto-fill the fields for you, but at least you’ll have the information close at hand. LastPass for Chrome has a comprehensive online Help file, as well as multiple helpful tutorial videos. Overall, we were quite impressed with LastPass, and we think it’s a great way to simplify password management.

With awareness of Internet security at an all-time high, keeping track of the unique passwords needed for logins can be difficult. LastPass for Safari for Mac allows a user to sign in with one password and save those multiple logins for use when needed.

Available as a free plugin for Safari, the program’s basic features do not require any payment to use. The program installs quickly into Safari without any user interaction needed. The only indication that the plugin is running is a small icon next to the URL bar in the Web browser. Users can access its settings and disable it if needed by going into Safari’s preferences section. Essentially, the plugin allows users to create one username and password combination that can be entered when beginning a browsing session. As a user browses through secure sites, the plugin enters previous stored login information, keeping the user from having to sift through multiple passwords to enter. Despite the lack of instructions, LastPass for Safari for Mac performs well. Additional features, including sending data and generating new random passwords, may be unlocked with a premium subscription for $1 per month. However, many of the program’s premium features are available in other, free programs. Despite this, the automatic retrieval of passwords as a user browses is a welcome advantage over other programs.

While simple, LastPass for Safari for Mac works well and may help those users with multiple, unique passwords used during Web browsing.

LastPass Password Manager is a convenient program to help you keep all of your log-in information secure without having to memorize all of it. You can use LastPass to automatically log in to any site once you’ve entered the information once, so you’ll never have to worry about forgetting your password again.

Pros

Browser integration: LastPass integrates with Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and more, so you can continue to use your favorite browser and still get all of the benefits from this app. You can choose to install only plug-ins for specific browsers, or you can use the universal installer, which will work on most major browsers and is the easiest option for novice users.

Nice interface: This app has a streamlined interface that makes the process of storing, accessing, and managing your log-ins a snap. Once you’re logged in to the app, a button will pop up each time you enter log-in information for another site. Just click this button to add that log-in to the Vault, and you’ll be able to manage it from there going forward.

Cons

Complicated installation: The installation process was a little convoluted, but instructions were clear enough. If you need help using the program, there are video tutorials, but that’s the only option. So if you prefer reading instructions and not sitting through videos, you’re out of luck.

Bottom Line

This is an excellent password manager with a host of great features including browser integration and a random password generator. Once you get past the installation, using this app is straightforward, and the inclusion of the master password feature ensures that your data will be safe, even if other people use your computer. For mobile access to this app, you can upgrade to the Premium version for $12.

LastPass for Mac gives you a safe place to keep all of your sensitive account log-ins and other info, so you don’t have to remember it all. Once you’ve entered all of your data into this app, you only need to remember your master password, and you’ll have access to all of your accounts and more.

Pros

Auto-fill: When you enable the browser extensions that come with LastPass, you can take advantage of the Auto-fill feature. That means you won’t even need to type in your log-ins or copy and paste them. And you can enter other types of information that you commonly use online, including your address, credit card information, and bank account numbers, so you can quickly auto-fill forms that require those details as well.

Password generation: When you add accounts to this app, you can use your current passwords, or you can have the software generate new ones for you. These are often more secure than the passwords you’d come up with on your own, and for each different account, you can specify the types of characters you’d like used, the number of characters you’d like the password to be, and whether or not you want it to be pronounceable, among other things.

Security Challenge: The Security Challenge section is a tool that lets you test the strength of all of the passwords you have stored in the app, and it also checks for duplicate passwords. Taking action on any of the Security Challenge recommendations helps to improve your score, which is an easy but effective motivator to make all of your log-ins more secure.

Cons

Password Recovery: While the app does prompt you to set up a Security Question to enable recovery of your Master Password, the function was not actually enabled when we tested the app. That means that if you forget your Master Password, you’ll have no access to the information stored there and no way to get back in.

Bottom Line

LastPass is a convenient and versatile tool for storing your sensitive information and improving security for your online accounts. It’s easy to use, offers a nice range of features, and it’s free to use without limits.
