Additional functions include a stopwatch and time index, which are useful for this type of program. Since most users will also have a smartphone, it would have been nice to see the program linked to an app to keep track of settings across devices, especially since the program is not freeware.

Overall, Alarm Clock Pro for Mac’s intuitive design and basic features make it a good option for those looking to set alarms on their Mac.

Data Guardian for Mac addresses the ever-present dilemma that so many of us are faced with these days — do you want passwords that are secure or that you can remember? This app lets you save passwords and other data securely, making it easy to use complicated passwords that are hard to crack.

Pros

Intuitive interface: While Data Guardian isn’t anything extraordinary design-wise, it earns points for being sleek and easy to navigate. With a few experimental clicks of the app’s buttons, we were up and running, with no need to consult the Help file.

Customization options: Data Guardian lets you create records that by default have fields for the account name, log-in, password, URL, and notes. However, you can also add custom fields and delete fields you don’t need. So although Data Guardian is well suited to storing your passwords, you could actually use the app to store all kinds of sensitive data.

Built-in password generator: Feeling the need for a password that’s a little more secure than your dog’s name or husband’s birthday? Data Guardian can automatically generate and save 11-character passwords that are a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols.

Cons

Caution needed: Data Guardian’s strength is also its downfall; although the whole point of the app is to remember passwords so that you don’t have to, you’d better make sure that you remember the master password to get into the app to begin with. If you don’t, you’ll permanently lose access to all the data stored within, which could be quite a hassle.

Trial limitations: You can try Data Guardian for 15 days, but after that you’ll have to purchase a license if you want to retain its full functionality.

Bottom Line

Data Guardian for Mac is a great way to keep track of your passwords and other sensitive data. The app manages to keep your information both accessible and secure. If you find yourself frequently locked out of your accounts, because you’ve forgotten complicated passwords — or worse, writing down your passwords next to your computer — Data Guardian might be just what you need.

Those working with multiple programs simultaneously may become frustrated if those windows change location and size each time they are used. Window Magician for Mac enables windows to be locked, but its lack of instructions and complicated steps make it hard to operate.

The free trial version of the program works for 15 days and purchasing a full license requires a $19.95 payment. While the download completed quickly, the program required us to activate certain assisting features in the control panel before startup. There are no user instructions or technical support available. The program’s menus are easy to navigate, but actually setting window size is complicated. Users must set window sizes and location by pixel length and width, as well as screen location. A situation or rule must then be attached to the window. This requires some trial and error to get it right, although it does function once set up properly. A program log also shows where the rules are applied for easier editing in the future. It would have been helpful if Window Magician for Mac allowed users to move windows to certain spaces and sizes and set them with a button click, but this did not appear to be available from the menus.

Window Magician for Mac’s complex setup makes it useful only for those users who are regularly frustrated at having to work with multiple windows.

Users who work on multiple wireless networks may find native managers insufficient. AirRader for Mac provides additional wireless management options in a relatively easy-to-use format.

AirRader for Mac is available as a free trial version with a 15-day limit. The full, unrestricted version requires a $19.95 payment. The download was fast and the program’s native installer was well designed. The installer did require acceptance of a user agreement and a pop-up prompted payment to access the full version, but this was easily dismissed. The menu’s major options available to the user are relatively easy to locate and the graphics associated with these buttons were clear. There is also support for updates and the program can be set to automatically check for them. In terms of functioning, the program searches for and displays available networks, although the placement of the search button is in an odd location. Networks are sorted according to their signal strength and placed in categories such as security, public, and general networks. The list was easy to read and additional options graphed the results and saved favorites.

For those users who frequently use different wireless networks, AirRadar for Mac works well and allows some additional features beyond native managers.

Those seeking alternatives to popular presentation programs like PowerPoint may have difficulty finding options. Project Canvas for Mac solves this problem, but its dated interface and lack of useful instructions make it hard to operate.

Project Canvas for Mac offers a free 15-day trial version, while unlocking the full program requires a $29.95 payment. The native installer set the program up quickly and required acceptance of a lengthy user agreement. Support for updates was available and several bugs had been fixed in the latest version. The program’s interface was very basic and akin to simple drawing software from 10 years ago, a disappointment for an application trying to compete with other, more modern, presentation software. The lack of a user tutorial also makes the program difficult to use. The help menu links to a developer wiki that does not interpret the menus well and mostly describes the program’s intent. When drawing objects and buttons in the program’s “cards,” we found that the operations did work as intended. Users also have the option to load photos, audio, or videos that can play at the user’s discretion. Screen size may be manipulated if the presentation calls for it. When a presentation is completed, the program can export the presentation to a format that allows it to be played without the Project Canvas application installed, which is a good feature for a program trying to compete with larger, more popular options.

While basically functional, Project Canvas for Mac’s basic design and problematic interface mean those looking for presentation software should look elsewhere.
