While not the easiest on the eyes, this privacy program quickly and successfully rid our computer of unwanted files and wasted disk space.

To access Clean Disk Security, you will have to run it as an administrator. The interface’s white on black color-scheme isn’t the easiest on the eyes, but the overall layout is easy to navigate. Simply select the drive you wish to clean, and check off the areas you want to include during the cleaning process. The program includes options to clean recent files, clean browser cookies, and empty the Recycle Bin. As far as cleaning methods, you can manually enter the number of passes, or choose the NIS, Gutmann, or Test mode methods. We liked the status bar at the bottom of the window that let us know the program’s progress. We also liked that the program displayed detailed lists of any found cookies and plug-ins so that you can directly manage them.

An extensive help menu is included, but even novices will appreciate the program’s ease of use. A link is provided to purchase the full version, but we found no limitations with the trial. Users of all skill levels will find this a reliable tool for permanently removing files and browsing traces.

We’ve seen many file-deleting utilities. Most are freeware offering “secure” file deletion by overwriting files on your disk multiple times until the data is unrecoverable. Kevin Solway’s Delete Doctor is a bit different. It’s designed to delete those files that just don’t want to leave your system, such as viruses and malware, files in shared folders, and files currently in use. To that end, it offers four different methods for removing files from your system. This simple freeware also has drag-and-drop capability.

Delete Doctor’s interface is compact but efficient, beginning with an entry field for Files to Delete. You can add files to delete by browsing, typing in the path, and dragging and dropping. Other than Browse, Help, and Quit buttons, Delete Doctor has four features: Delete file via DOS short name, Delete file via UNC name, Delete File on System Restart, and Delete all files in folder (del *.*). Clicking Help brought up a brief but concise explanation of each. The first two use alternate file names known to the system to delete files. One of them, delete via UNC name, is based on the Universal Name Convention and can delete files on shared and mapped network drives. The Delete on Restart method is useful for deleting those persistently pesky files that remain in use by the system, particularly viruses and other bad software that you’re trying to eject. When all else fails, the Delete all files method uses the DOS command to delete all the files in the folder. Be sure that you don’t need any of the files in that folder because this command will delete them. You can always make a copy of all the good files and save them in a safe place, use the Delete all files feature, and then move the good files back.

Delete Doctor deleted everything we told it to. That’s not the problem, and the “problem” isn’t a problem unless you make it one by using Delete Doctor carelessly. Be certain you’re deleting the right files because Delete Doctor is perfectly capable of deleting the wrong ones, if you tell it to.

As you probably suspect, Windows doesn’t show you everything that’s on your hard drive. However, Disk Investigator does. It’s a free, compact tool that searches your hard drives and displays everything that’s on them, bypassing your operating system and reading the raw data, sector by sector. With it, you can examine raw directories, files, clusters, and system sectors, which is especially useful when you’re reusing a disk or upgrading your OS. You can also use it to verify the effectiveness of disk-cleaning utilities and even recover deleted files and lost data, in many cases.

This simple but effective tool opened with a dialog-based interface displaying the raw contents of our C: drive in the main window, with a single cluster highlighted. You can select any cluster, click View Cluster, and call up a display of the raw file contents. To the left of the main window are options to view disks or directories, a drop-down menu displaying all disks on the system, and a panel displaying disk information for the selection. The software identified all seven logical disks on our system; clicking any called up the disk’s details. There’s a handy slider bar at the bottom that lets you quickly move from the front to the back of the disk, and disk search tools, too. Clicking the Directories view changed the main display to a scrolling, color-coded, gridded list view of our system’s directories; clicking any entry called up a dialog with detailed information and displayed the directory in the browsable left-hand tree view. There’s even a handy Hex Converter tool on the Help menu, which also accesses a fully indexed Help file that explains what the program shows about your disks.

Disk Investigator is fairly unique in its ability to display the raw data on your hard drives. Its undelete capabilities will come in handy to a wide range of users, but those with more experience, such as system administrators and programmers, will get the most of the incredible detail and raw data this fine tool uncovers.
