While you may have to put in a bit of time upfront to create a list of your favorite foods and common exercise routines, that hard work will pay off in the end when you can enter your entire day’s information in just a few minutes.

The first time you open JXCirrus CalCount, you’ll have to enter your height and weight, so the app can calculate your Body Mass Index and generate a target calorie range for you. Once that’s done, you’re ready to start recording your meals and building up your food list. The interface is a little clunky, with tabs across the top for Diary, My Foods, Food Database, and My Exercise. You can jump in and try adding meals right away if you’d like, but the app does come with an extensive Help file that will save you a lot of time when you’re trying to get used to the interface. In the Diary section, you’ll see a large chart with rows in which you can enter your meals, and columns to record the number of calories, fat, and other nutrients each item contained. While the app does come with an extensive Food Database that includes common items with their nutrition information already filled in, you’ll likely have to enter in a lot of that information for the foods you eat on a regular basis. As you enter these, though, they’re added to the program, and you can use them on subsequent entries with just one click.

Whether you’re just trying to keep to a healthy diet, or you’re training hard for some type of athletic event, JXCirrus CalCount is a good tool, but it’s not for the casual user. As long as you don’t mind putting in a good amount of work setting up the app, you’ll be rewarded in the long run by this free program.

JXCirrus Maths for Mac is a program that lets you set up sets of exercises for your kids to help them practice their math skills. You can tailor the quizzes to their ability level, and the program keeps track of their time for them, so they can compete against themselves and measure their progress.

This app has an intuitive interface, letting you set up different sets of exercises quickly. When you’re adding an exercise, you’ll first select either Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, or Division. Then determine how many problems you’d like, which numbers to use, and whether you want the equations to appear in numerical order or randomly. You can also select whether you’d like individual sets of problems to show up for each session, once a day, or once a week. Add as many sets of exercises as you want, and then let your kids test themselves. When they start a session, they can pick the set of problems they want to try, and then a list of equations will show up in a new screen. As they type their answer into the box at the end of the equation, the cursor will automatically move to the next box. The program times how long they take for each equation and for the whole set in total, so they can try and beat their best scores and see how they are improving over time.

There is a full Help document available for this program, although the straightforward interface makes finding most features a snap. This app is free, and it runs smoothly, making it a good choice if you want your kids to have a fun way to practice math problems on a regular basis.

Pros

Good tutorial: There is a lot going on in this app, so the thorough walk-through really helps you get the hang of all the features and controls quickly. Depending on your level of familiarity with this type of program, you can opt for the full tutorial or just a short overview. No matter which option you choose, you’ll also benefit from the opportunity to explore the preloaded sets of example data to see how a project will look when it’s all entered in.

Continuous replanning: Not only does this app create a timeline for your project based on the data you originally enter, but it also readjusts that timeline every time you make a change. When you mark a task complete or add another resource, JXCirrus Project will recalculate to provide more accurate completion projections for the entire project.

Cons

Cramped interface: This program can do a lot, and the interface is set up so that you can see everything at once all the time. That’s not always ideal, however, and it makes for a cluttered and confusing look at times. The tutorial is a big help when you’re trying to get the hang of the controls, but even when you know where everything is, the interface can be jarring to look at. One main reason for this is that the main window is split in two sections, but unless you have a very large screen, you won’t be able to see all of what’s in either section at any given point without scrolling horizontally.

Bottom Line

JXCirrus Project for Mac is a useful and convenient piece of software. It provides all of the features promised, and while the interface may leave a few things to be desired, it’s overall a very good free app.
