DVD Hunter for Mac offers basic functionality for creating a database of your DVD collection. Even though this application mostly works, adding titles can be a bear and some features are implemented rather poorly.

On first launch, DVD Hunter for Mac asks the user to import their Contacts, which may seem a bit odd at first since this is a DVD cataloging app, but after getting to know all the options offered later on, this made sense. After the application completes importing contacts, the user is given the option of reading a Getting Started guide. The app’s interface seems basic but also very intuitive. For all but the most novice of Mac users it will be easy enough to get started without reading the guide. During testing, we added a few movies from our collection, typing in the first couple of words of a title and pressing the “Auto complete” button. DVD Hunter quickly returned with over a dozen results, accounting for various editions of DVD releases of the same movie. It wasn’t always easy to discern which edition was ours, and some of the information returned was incorrect. When we saved the title to our catalog, we noticed the title was listed as our partial search term, not the full title. The application also includes a mechanism for tracking who you’ve lent your DVDs to, which is the reason behind the Contacts import. If the user imported their contacts, they can only select them from a drop-down menu, though. There’s no way to just type a person’s name in.

DVD Hunter for Mac seems to be designed with the serious collector in mind, though collectors may find this software limited in some options.

Library Hunter for Mac can compile a media library that includes movies, music, books, and games by grabbing relevant content information from the Web. The app offers e-mail, IM, Facebook, and Twitter support, and it allows you to sync your library via Dropbox so you can also access it anytime via your mobile device. It also allows you add all the information, manually, if you wish.

Library Hunter for Mac installs in no time. The interface is intuitive and lets you quickly view the library, add new media to your collection, share your library on social media sites, or sync to Dropbox. To add a new item to the library, you have to select the type of media you want to add and provide some basic info. about it, such as title and a bar code standard, so the app can find it online. We tried adding various movies, music albums, books, and games by just typing part of the title and the application returned results in the blink of an eye, for all but games. Whatever we typed when searching for games just didn’t work and no games were found or added to our library. For the other three categories, all available information, including the cover art, were added without any issues. We also had no problems adding files to our Wishlist, as well as to On Loan, Borrowed, and Not Owned categories, either.

Library Hunter for Mac offers a good solution for anyone looking to quickly catalog media files such as movies, music and books. Gamers should look elsewhere, though.

Book Hunter for Mac’s excellent interface and helpful tutorial make it a good application for sorting and organizing a book collection. As users read more and more on their computers, smartphones, tablets, and with physical books at home, this type of application is becoming more useful.

After downloading and starting up, the free application brings the user into a tutorial, which links to the developer’s Web page for more information. This help is not really needed since Book Hunter for Mac is easy to use. The main interface includes noticeable buttons for entering book information and creating separate lists for different types of materials. Clicking on the new book section brings up an additional window where its description and information can be entered. Users can also drag cover images into a window for inclusion, as well as mark the item read, unread, or in the process of being read. An auto-complete button also allows for retrieval of additional information from the Internet. This function works well and returns a number of metadata options for the materials entered, even with limited information. Users also can add borrowed books and ones that they want to purchase in the future.

Book Hunter for Mac works well and should be helpful for almost any level of Mac user.

Game Hunter for Mac, like its sister application DVD Hunter for Mac, offers users a way to comprehensively catalog and keep track of their large video game collections. The level of detail this app offers might be a bit overwhelming, though.

Installation was performed quickly and easily, and we were adding games to our newly created catalog within minutes. The intuitive interface meant little hassle in adding titles and populating the various fields of data. We typed a few words into the title field and clicked “Auto complete” to retrieve the rest of the information from Amazon’s database. However, while doing so we found that some of the fields were superfluous. We wondered if any gamers out there would ever need to sort their game collection by UPC code or age rating. These seem more useful to sellers, but Game Hunter for Mac is designed for the collector, with no place to add a price or note whether it’s been sold or not. There’s a feature to track the lending history of the game, which integrates your contacts into the app to identify which of your friends or family have borrowed it. You can also check off the game’s status–“Unplayed,” “Playing,” or “Finished”–information that even the casual gamer would know off the top of their head.

Game Hunter for Mac is designed for the serious video game collector to stay on top of their collection and not lose track of the titles they’ve purchased. Though the level of detail it offers may be more than necessary, this application works as intended and is definitely worth a try.
