Those who often use eBay to purchase items may not like the Web site’s interface. For those users and others who want to follow eBay items easily from their desktop, GarageBuy for Mac may be a useful program.

The program took a bit longer than expected to download, but started up immediately after it completed without any actual setup. It also asked us whether we wanted the companion iPhone app, but this was easily dismissed. There appeared to be support for updates. No instructions were available, but this was not a detriment since the interface was easy to figure out. The search bar at the top of GarageBuy for Mac is easy to identify and entering an item description quickly brings up available auctions. Large icons allow the user to place bids as well as track items for later reference and bid monitoring. Item descriptions, photographs, and time remaining in the auction were easy to identify. Sections also show where bids are active, won, lost, and expired. The program may also be customized to restrict search results by a number of factors, including minimum and maximum bids among others. The program is free and therefore there is no purchase requirement to unlock its full features.

Users unhappy with eBay’s Web interface will find a fully functional tracking and bidding application in GarageBuy for Mac.

Pros

Creates appealing listings: With GarageSale for Mac, you can develop attractive eBay listings through a clean interface that offers you 130 free templates, plus the ability to create custom templates. This WYSIWYG app ensures that everything you write and edit is the same as what appears on your eBay page.

One click to relist: All templates you create are saved so that you can quickly relist them. This is a great feature if you are selling multiple similar items on eBay.

Support for multiple accounts: If you have several eBay accounts, you can make separate listings for them. You just have to make sure that you have your preferred shipping, billing, and pricing information sections modified.

Scheduled auctions: Through the application’s Events function, you can start an auction at a date and time of your choosing with just a few clicks on the well-laid-out Inspector panel options.

Cons

Not for eBay newbies: If you are not familiar with how eBay works, you will likely find GarageSale difficult to use. Its many advanced features have not been simplified for beginners, although creating listings is relatively easy.

Memory intensive: This application can freeze your computer if you run a number of programs simultaneously.

Bottom Line

A great eBay front-end application, GarageSale offers an array of useful features that work and can boost your eBay sales. However, its cost might not be justified if you are not a frequent eBay seller or trader. This app targets medium- and large-scale eBay sellers.

GaragePay for Mac serves as an alternative manager for your PayPal account. The app comes at a price, but it does have a demo mode, where most of the transaction information is hidden. In terms of functionality, the software supports exporting your transaction history to a CSV file as well as using smart folders to show only what you are looking for.

GaragePay for Mac greets you with a pleasant interface that follows OS X’s design aesthetic. You can quickly update the transaction log, send and refund money, add e-mails to your AddressBook, as well as export information to a CSV file. Two nice touches are the fullscreen mode and the smart folders, which allow you to instantly filter and easily find the payments you need. In order to use the service, however, you need PayPal API credentials, which usually require a Premier or Business account. During testing we found the log-in process rather unintuitive; we had to create a blank account and then fill in the credentials rather than the other way around.

If you’re a small business owner and take a lot of payments through PayPal, GaragePay for Mac may offer you a better way to review your transactions thanks to the smart folder feature, which you can use to display filtered content. The biggest obstacle to using the app is the need for a PayPal Premier or Business account. This limits its usage to business owners or merchants.
